Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time – Oct 5~6

Reading I : Habakkuk 1:2-3, 2:2-4

The just one lives by faithfulness.

The prophet Habakkuk, a contemporary of Jeremiah, preached during a time of great

turmoil.

Habakkuk questions why God tolerates violence against the innocent.

God told the prophet that the faithful person must be patient and wait for God’s

promises.

Reading II : 2 Timothy 1:6-8, 13-14

Stir into flame the gift of God.

The passage from the Second Letter of Paul to Timothy was an exhortation to

Christian ministers to be faithful.

When one accepts the call to ministry, one is gifted by the Spirit of God.

The function of the Holy Spirit is to give strength and perseverance in a difficult job,

which is a theme that points to the hardships that must be endured in the ministries of

Paul and Timothy and their successors.

Gospel : Luke 17:5-10

Increase our faith.

Today’s Gospel passage is from a collection of Jesus’ sayings on discipleship.

The disciples ask Jesus for an increase of faith. With the exaggerated image of a

mustard seed, Jesus casts doubt on their possession of any faith.

In the second saying about workers, Jesus warns his followers against thinking that

they deserve or can earn a special reward because of their service.

Question for Youth: The Gospel tells us even a little bit of faith is enough to make amazing

things happen. How are you keeping your faith alive and growing? What good things

happen in your life because of your faith?

Question for Adults: Being “in Christ” means living as Christ teaches. What signs do you see

in your life of generosity, forgiveness, hospitality, or any other of Jesus’ teachings?

PASTOR’S DESK…

Faith Comes By Living

What if someone gave you a lifetime membership in a fitness club? You would say it’s a gift,

but to really receive the meaning of the gift, you have to get active and DO SOMETHING.

What about your love relationships? People say, “God brought my sweetheart into my life.”

So you got the gift—but if you don’t give, and interact, and talk to your loved one, the gift

dies without ever being opened up. Your children are a wonderful gift; but you experience

the gift by raising and talking to and sharing life with them, don’t you?

Faith is that kind of free gift. You only get excited and energized by faith when you open

yours up, experience it, and strengthen it by LIVING the life of Jesus. Everyday acts of

discipline, charity, love and compassion—that is how our souls become wiser, our insights

become deeper. That is how the muscles of faith increase. It takes exercising faith to increase

its muscles! And you know how much easier it is to jog or work out with a friend? When

we’re in a faith community together, working out the ways of faith side by side, it’s all part of

a healthy Christian lifestyle. Even the hard parts of living our faith can feel positive.

Our Catechism says, “Faith is not an isolated act. No one can believe alone… You have not

given yourself faith as you have not given yourself life. The believer has received faith from

others and should hand it on to others...I cannot believe without being carried by the faith of

others, and by my faith I help support others in the faith." (par. 166) One of the most

important things Catholics do is to supply faith for each other.

There is no shame in admitting that we need each other; but some of us feel ashamed to talk

about our faith, even with another churchgoer. Maybe that is why St. Paul says today, “don’t

be embarrassed…”. We need to encourage each other in the working out of faith in the

decisions of everyday life. And we humans constantly need to remind each other. C. S. Lewis

said, "We have to be continually reminded of what we believe. Neither the belief in Christ nor

any other will automatically remain alive in the mind. It must be fed….”

Reach out to someone who has stopped going to church. Just asking them is an exercise in

extending your own faith. Try it and see. Go in peace to love and serve our God!

Liturgy of the Word

for Children

During the Liturgy of the Word for Children,

the Gospel will be read followed by a discussion of the Gospel.

It is our hope that the children may make the biblical readings their own

and may come more and more to appreciate the value of God's word.

The Liturgy of the Word for Children is celebrated

during 11:30 mass in the rectory basement.

Children are dismissed from church immediately after the opening prayer,

then return to mass during the offertory procession

(the beginning of the Liturgy of the Eucharist).

Liturgy of the Word for Children

is open to all children 3 years old thru 1st

grade.

If you have any questions

or would like to assist with the Liturgy of the Word for Children,

please contact Bonnie Trzaska 419-628-2062 or

Therese Brown in the Parish Center 419-628-3434.
