From the Office of

Liturgy and Music

As we return to a very short period of

Ordinary Time – just five weekends

before an early Ash Wednesday-

Easter season – we’ll look at the theol-

ogy of vocations as expressed in the

Church’s liturgy documents. The

Church as a whole is in a great need

of particularly priestly vocations and it

is a true blessing to have clergy here

that are committed to doing whatev-

er is needed to try to foster these vo-

cations. These columns will focus on

the Introductions to the liturgical rites

of the two sacraments of vocation:

Matrimony and Holy Orders. These

Sacraments “are directed towards

the salvation of others; if they contrib-

ute as well to personal salvation, it is

through service to others that they do

so. They confer a particular mission in

the Church and serve to build up the

People of God” (Catechism of the

Catholic Church, no. 1534). The sac-

rament of Holy Orders publicly brings

about a particular relationship be-

tween God and humanity: “[t]hrough

sacred Ordination certain of the

Christian faithful are appointed in the

name of Christ and receive the gift of

the Holy Spirit to shepherd the Church

with the word and grace of

God” (RO, no. 1). From the practice

of the Church throughout the centu-

ries, “it is clear that the laying on of

hands and the Prayer of Ordination

bestow the gift of the Holy Spirit and

impress a sacred character in such a

way that Bishops, priests, and dea-

cons are, in their respective ways,

conformed to Christ” (no. 6). In sacra-

mental word and gesture “the Bishop

blesses God and calls upon the gift of

the Holy Spirit for the fulfillment of min-

istry” (no. 6).
