Celebrating the Sacraments
Marriage Banns III Christopher Magnani and Claire Harmange
Marriage Banns I Thomas Fitzpatrick and Lucianna Silva
Funerals - We mourn the passing of and pray for the repose of the soul of Louis Yelle whose funeral was held at St. Augustine last week.
Celebrating our Faith The Church celebrates many saints this week including:
August 8th (Monday) is the Memorial of St. Dominic, Priest. Born in Spain in 1170, he was trained for the priesthood and on a trip to France with his bishop, he was inspired to become an itinerant preacher to combat the heresy of the day (Albigensianism). He developed a following of preachers who lived in community and, in 1215, founded the Order of Preachers, aka the Dominicans. He is the patron saint of astronomers and the Dominican Republic.
August 10th (Wednesday) is the Feast of St. Lawrence, Marytr. Lawrence was a deacon in Rome under Pope St. Sixtus, II during the 3rd century. He was put to death during a persecution of Christians, likely during the reign of Emperor Valerian. Little is known about his life but a popular legend concerning his martyrdom tells of an angry Prefect of Rome who, convinced that St. Lawrence hid a great treasure of the Church from him, condemned him to a cruel death. St. Lawrence was tied on top of an iron grill and slowly roasted to death. Burning with courage and love of God he joked, "Turn me over, I'm done on this side!" He is the patron saint of cooks and the poor.
August 11th (Thursday) is the Memorial of St. Clare, Virgin. St. Clare was born in Assisi in 1194. Inspired by the preaching of St. Francis, she became the first woman to devote her entire life to poverty. She established an order of young women who lived a very austere life devoted to serving the poor. They gradually became known as the Order of Poor Clares. She is the patroness of sore eyes and television.
Dear Parishioners: How did August get here so quickly? A couple of months ago I mentioned in a homily the
opportunity for anyone to have a tour of Lazarus House Ministries. A few weeks later a gentleman approached me after Mass to express his thanks. He took me up on the suggestion and was very, very impressed with all he saw and learned. Both he and I hope that many more of you will follow suit. Please consider taking a tour - give Ellen or Marcie a call to schedule: 978-689-8575.
Speaking of following suit… You have probably noticed that work has begun on the preservation/ restoration of our beautiful stained glass windows. Soon work will also begin on the replacement of the side entrance ramp and walkways of the church. As you know, our new organ was delivered and installed in time for Easter. In late May I wrote to everyone explaining these projects, plus the need to have the church painted and asking your support. The overall expense is approximately $500,000. To date we have received about $100,000 or 20%. The painting can and will be delayed until next year, but the other three projects could not wait. Please do your part and make a commitment to this special appeal. Thank you to all who have contributed so far and thanks to all whose "checks are in the mail."
God bless you! Father Peter

St. Augustine Parish, Andover, MA
On Sunday September 11, 2016 at 7:00pm St Augustine Parish will host an "Evening of Music-We Will Never Forget" in recognition of the 15th anniversary of one of the worst catastrophes in our lifetime. Through music, reading, and personal reflections, we hope to bring some peace to those who suffered the loss of a loved one, whether it be a close friend, a colleague, or a family member. It is said that time heals all wounds, but many of us feel the pain and anguish of that day just as strongly now as we did then. It is important to
remember all those who lost their lives in the attack, including the first responders who laid down their lives while helping to save others. We invite anyone in the parish who would like to participate in this event to please contact Cynthia Arsenault, Director of Music at [email protected] or leave a message at 978-475-0050 x34.
Adult Faith Formation The next Young Adult Catholics' Scripture Study is this Thursday, August 11th at 8pm in the parish center. Following the theme of the Year of Mercy, the scripture passage being discussed is Ezekiel 37:1-14. All young Catholics in their 20's or 30's looking to connect in spirituality and friendship are welcome! To learn more, contact Samantha at [email protected] or Tom at [email protected]
Coming Soon - Meeting Christ in Prayer Once each month from September through April, various forms of prayer will be experienced and discussed—a “how to” program for those who want to learn to pray, experience new ways of praying, or just want to share the time with others who may be struggling with their prayer or need encouragement and support in prayer. Our first session is on Wednesday, Sept. 28, at 9am and 7pm. This first session begins with a timeline and journaling. Helpful hand out and multiple resources will be used - a journal/notebook and Bible are recommended. Registration ($10) is needed to provide materials for everyone - email [email protected] or Monica Gallagher at [email protected] This is a no-pressure, no-experience program which welcomes all ages—you just need the desire to pray better. Join at any time for any number of sessions.

Featured Ministry - Parish Pastoral Council
St. Augustine Parish is blessed to have more than 30 ministries serving our local and extended communities. Each week, a different ministry is featured here. For a complete list and information about each ministry, visit www.staugustineparish.org and contact the listed coordinator.
The Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) assists the pastor in his leadership role by offering its prayerful advice and guidance. It takes a long-range view of the future needs of the parish and strives to foster unity and a sense of community in the parish. The Council works together with the Pastor to discern the pastoral needs of the parish and ways in which those needs can be addressed.
The PPC is made up of fifteen members selected from the parishioners at large, and the pastor can appoint additional members as he sees fit. The pastor, parochial vicar, and deacon are ex-officio members . Each year in May, five new members are selected for membership on PPC to serve for a 3-year term. In this way 1/3 of the Council changes each year. All parishioners who are interested or who are nominated by other parishioners to serve on the PPC have their names submitted to Fr. Peter. At the Vigil Mass of Pentecost, five names are drawn from all nominees who have agreed to serve should they be selected.
