PARENT FORUMS
We arrange forums for our parents when we would like to make a significant change in the
school, need parent input or feedback or are initiating new programs for students. We have
arranged the forum below:
Parent Forum 1 – Towards BYOD in 2020 for Stage 3 – preparing our students for
tomorrow, today!
BYOD stands for ‘Bring Your Own Device’. We would like to invite all parents of children currently
in Year 4 and Year 5 to a parent forum immediately before the next P&C meeting.
At this forum we will discuss why we are proposing to implement BYOD for Stage 3 students in
2020 and will showcase some of the digital learning students are engaged in. There will also be an
opportunity for questions.
When: Monday, 24 June
Time: 6:00pm – 7:00pm
Where: Forestville Public School Hall
Please RSVP by filling out the form on this link: https://forms.gle/DwFPSXuBk4fTZPpF7 , or
contact the office if you can’t access the link.
SCHOOL UNIFORM
Thank you to those parents who have addressed the frayed and dishevelled hats that were
appearing at Forestville. I truly appreciate your understanding and am very glad that students are
valuing their uniform and respect for the school.
From 1 June we ask parents to send their children to school in their winter uniform. Mornings,
especially, can be very cold at Forestville and we would like all children to be warm and comfortable
whether they are outside or inside. At this time of year we have problems with jackets and jumpers
being left around the school. We are working with the leadership team to come up with a solution
to lost property, but it would be very helpful if you have your child’s name clearly marked on their
clothing in order to return it to them. Names written on the label can be hard to decipher once it
has been through the wash a number of times and the label may fall off. Please also remind your
child to look in lost property if their jacket goes missing.
BAND CAMP
Congratulations to all students who attended our annual Band Camp at Camp Kedron in Ingleside
last week. The behaviour and enthusiasm of every child was exemplary, and their proficiency, skills
and playing improved markedly over the 2 days. I visited on Monday evening to share in games and
activities and I couldn’t have been prouder of our fabulous band students. Mrs Cordaiy attended the
afternoon concert and reported that every performance was of a very high standard and that she
felt that they were as good as many high school bands. I am very excited to see recordings of these
performances.
Mrs Mackenzie, Ms Costa, Mrs Stevens and Miss McAllister all sang the praises of the students and I
would like to thank these staff for their commitment and dedication to our students and bands.
Thank you also the parents who attended to support the children. We could not have done it
without you.
Thanks also to the high levels of commitment and expertise of our conductors. Finally enormous
thanks go to the band committee, especially Alison, who spent many hours in the coordination and
organisation of the event.
At the centre of all this is the students, their education, wellbeing and skills in music. Thank you to
everyone involved.

SHAVE FOR A CURE
Hearty congratulations to Lachie in Year 6 for his fundraising efforts for Cancer Research. He
donated a significant amount of money to the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest
Shave and he grew his hair long enough for it to be made available for a wig to be given to
someone who has a medical need.
The GRIT Lachie showed over the last 4 years to get his hair to a length that could be
made available to use in a wig is a credit to him. He was always neat and tidy when coming
to school and kept his hair clean and well-groomed out of respect for his uniform and
school. This demonstration of sticking with and achieving this goal in spite of any negative
comments that came his way shows great strength of character and hails well for his future
teenage years. Well done Lachie, everyone at Forestville is very proud of you!

GROWTH MINDSET
Growth vs. fixed mindset
When talking about failure with your child, it’s helpful to talk about the two kinds of
mindsets that people can have - a growth mindset or a fixed mindset.
Growth mindset
This is where a person’s self-esteem is centred on the belief that abilities can be developed
through dedication and hard work. In this mindset, it is believed that success comes from
about 35% ability, and 65% effort.
A growth mindset is about learning how to fail well, and knowing that learning from failure
is what leads to eventual success. This can be summed up in the sentence “I can’t do that…
YET.”
Signs that your child has a growth mindset:
they’re keen to learn from people around them they understand that getting what they want, or learning new skills, requires putting in effort they’re aware of their weaknesses, but they are focused on improving them they welcome challenges and are open to new things.
Fixed mindset
A fixed mindset is when people believe that traits such as ability or talent are fixed, set at
birth and not able to be changed. They let failure or success define who they are. It could be
said that they believe that success comes from about 65% ability, and only about 35% effort.
Signs that your child has a fixed mindset:
they avoid challenges when they think they might stuff up they don’t deal well with setbacks they try to hide their mistakes they are very negative about themselves, often saying things like “I can’t do it”.

Zone Cross Country Carnival
The Warringah Zone Cross Country Carnival was held at Aquatic Reserve on Friday 24th May,
2019. Approximately 48 of our students competed on the day. Mother Nature was kindly on
our side, with a nice cool morning that warmed up as the carnival progressed. A huge
congratulations to all our runners who gave it their all on the day with several of our students
having outstanding results and will now move on to the Area Carnival in Gosford later in the
year. Overall our school narrowly finished 2nd to Killarney Heights PS for the second year
running. Thanks to all the parents who helped us with managing, marshalling and transport.
Top efforts FPS athletes! As usual, you have all represented us well and we are very proud of
