Our new Kindergarten students settled into ‘Big’ school beautifully last week. I would like to
thank all parents of our new students for their sensible and supportive approach to their
children starting at Forestville. The teachers are thrilled with their classes and will
communicate their programs and plans for 2019 tonight at the Kindergarten Parent
information evenings.
All other grades have their parent information evening dates and times listed above.
Parent representatives
As part of our plan to promote good communication across all classes we are asking for 2
parent volunteers for each class. These volunteers will liaise with the classroom teacher and
communicate information to other parents and work in conjunction with the P&C to promote
fundraising and the delivery of improvements in the school. As a shared role the workload
will be lessened and responsibilities divided. We truly appreciate parents taking this role on
board and it’s a great way to get to know the other parents and the students. Teachers will
ask for parent volunteers and also collect parents’ emails to add to the communication lists
during the parent information sessions. There are just two P&C meetings every term which
can be shared also. Your attendance at these would be greatly appreciated as then you will
be able to represent your class’s perspective and provide valued feedback. It will make
Forestville an even more community focused school.
YEAR 7 IN 2020
An expression of Interest form will be sent home today with all Year 6 students for
placement in Year 7, 2020 in NSW Government schools. Please complete the form and return
to the school no later than Monday 18 March, 2019. All information relating to the
expression of interest is on the form. If you have any questions or concerns please see Katy
Costa (Stage 3 AP).

Congratulation on your great leadership at the swimming carnival!
Swimming Carnival
Last Tuesday our school swimming carnival ran like clockwork thanks to the great teamwork
of teachers and parents. With so many participants, it’s always a challenge to complete our
scheduled races, but we did so and managed a student/parent &teacher noodle race at the
end. Thanks to our many parent volunteers who timed the races and to our lifeguards, Sam,
Renee and James, and to Chris Williamson and his fabulous team for all of their strategic
planning and organisation.
It was the first time our new 2019 House Captains took responsibility in their new roles, and
did a great job. I was incredibly proud of students’ SAGE attitudes, participating with such
enthusiasm and energy while also congratulating and supporting each other. It’s evidence of
a true Growth Mindset and the ‘Encouraging Others’ part of our SAGE program in play.
Forestville’s SAGE motto
Students Aim High
Give it a Go
Encourage Others
Growth Mindset Parenting
Parenting can be really hard work. Having a growth mindset helps.
Research by Carol Dweck and her team from Stanford University, shows that parents can have
a powerful impact on their children’s mindsets. The language you use and the actions you
take show your children what you expect. Giving process praise, talking about the brain,
accepting mistakes as learning opportunities, and understanding the role of emotions in
learning are all practices you can begin today.
The way we praise our children can have a profound impact on their mindset. Research on
praise and mindsets shows that when we praise children for being smart, it promotes a fixed
mindset. It sends a message that their accomplishments are trait-based, and tied to
something innate. In contrast, praising kids for working hard promotes a growth mindset. It
sends a message that the child’s effort is what led them to success. Want more tips on what to
say, and what not to say, when praising your kids?
Many thanks for your support.

Super fish show off their stuff in the pool!
Congratulations to everyone who took part in our swimming carnival last Tuesday. Some
of our students looked like they are ready for Tokyo next year, others weren’t quite as
efficient, but that did not detract from the width of their smiles upon finishing.
Our students were led by an enthusiastic group of sports captains who not only
encouraged thunderous cheering but also helped organise relay teams and ensured that
we left the Aquatic Centre in a clean condition. A huge thanks to the many parent
volunteers (especially our lifesavers!) who certainly put in a full day.
Well done to Sturt for being the winning house on the day.
The results can be accessed through the link below and
please contact Mr. Williamson through the school email if
you have any queries.
The top three finishers in 50m Freestyle and top two in all
other events have progressed to the Zone Carnival which
will be held on 4th March. So please, keep up your training!
Permission notes for Zone will be handed to students this
week. Congratulations to all students, parents and helpers
on an excellent day.

On Friday 1st, 8th and 15th February (9:00am-11:00am) , all students in Years 3-6 will be
involved in either School Sport or PSSA trials. If your child wishes to try out for a
competition PSSA team they should return the permission note to the office.
The PSSA teams for Term 1/2 and the teachers in charge are:
•Junior Boys Cricket (Years 4 and 5)- Mr Ellis
•Senior Boys Cricket (Years 5 and 6)- Mr Ellis
•Junior Girls A and B T-ball (Years 4 and 5)- Miss Amery
•Senior Girls A and B Softball (Years 5 and 6)- Miss Clisby
•Senior Boys (Yrs 5-6) and Junior A (Yrs 3-4) Mixed Eagle Tag- Mr Williamson
•Junior B & C Mixed Eagle Tag (Yrs 3- 4)- Miss Ingram
Because of constraints on venues and resources only a limited number of students will be
selected for teams. Whilst we encourage all students to trial, they should be aware that
not every student will make a team.
Please contact Mr Ellis if you have any questions.
PSSA Trials
There will be trials for Stage 3 students for the Paul Kelly Cup teams this week.
Girls trial: Thursday lunch time on the oval
Boys trial: Friday lunchtime on the oval
Anne Mackenzie, James Ellis
Paul Kelly Cup Trials
Throughout the year there will be various regional sport trials in which every school in
the region is given the opportunity to send a limited number of students to trial. To
assist in identifying the students who may be given the permission notes about each trial
we need information on any sports FPS students may have had extensive competitive
experience in. Last week these permission notes were given out to those students in
Years 5 and 6, however if there are any Year 3 or 4 students who think they should be
considered for Primary Zone Sport Trials please contact Mr. Ellis.
The sports available to trial in are: basketball, tennis, AFL, soccer, rugby league, hockey,
rugby union, netball, golf, touch football, softball, cricket and water polo. Please do not
indicate your interest unless your child has experience at quite a high level in their
particular sport.
If your child is interested in basketball, field hockey or rugby league, please email Mr. Ellis
through the school email as those trials are coming up very shortly.
2019 Warringah Zone Sport Trials
It was wonderful to see so many students audition for both dance groups. Everyone did an
outstanding job and can be very proud of their effort.
Forestville is very lucky to have so many wonderful, talented dancers.
Unfortunately the rules for the Sydney North Dance Festival only allow us to choose 24
students per group - so many students will miss out.
If you do not make it in this year then PLEASE try again next year. Preference is given to the
older year in each group.
A list for each group will be put up in the hall on Tuesday at lunchtime so please check to
see if your name is on the list.
Rehearsals for both groups will start this week:
Thursday Lunch: Yr3/4 Group
Friday Lunch: Yr5/6 Group.
If you are chosen for the Dance Groups then you need to be able to come to the following
rehearsals every week:
Tuesday lunch : Yr5/6 Group
Thursday Lunch: Yr3/4 Group
Friday Lunch: Yr5/6 Group or Yr3/4 Group
Each student will also need to be available in the LAST 2 weeks of Term 2 as this is when we
will be performing at Glen Street Theatre.
Thank you

Student Banking
Get involved in the School Banking program.
Forestville Public School is excited to offer the Commonwealth Bank School Banking
program to all students.
School Banking is a fun, interactive and engaging way for young Australians to learn
about money and develop good savings habits. Children who deposit money into their
Youthsaver account through School Banking earn Dollarmites tokens, which they can
save up and redeem for exciting rewards.
The rewards available during 2019 are:
Scented Stackable Highlighters
Snowy Origami Set
Icicle Slapband Ruler
Yeti Fluffly Notepad
Arctic Owl Fluffy Keyring
Scratch Art Cards
Water Skimming Bounce Ball
Polar Pencils & Pencil Toppers
School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school. Our school receives a Regular
Savers Contribution of $5 for every 10 deposits processed per student as well as an
Annual Contribution which is based on the number of students who made at least one
School Banking deposit in the prior year.
Getting involved in School Banking is easy!
All you need to get involved in the School Banking program is a Commonwealth Bank
Youthsaver account. You can open an account for your child in one of two ways:
1. Online
Visit commbank.com.au/schoolbanking and click on the link to open a Youthsaver
account.
2. In branch
Visit a Commonwealth Bank branch with identification for yourself and your child, like a
driver’s licence and birth certificate.
If your child has an existing Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account they can start
banking straight away. They just need to bring their deposit in every week on School
Banking day using their Dollarmites deposit wallet.
Thank You to the following parents who volunteered to be Parent Representatives
for each group on the Strings Committee.
Any students who would like to play chess against other students should come to 4E in the
second half of lunch on Mondays, starting next Monday, 11 February. Those students who
do not know how to play will be instructed by Mr. Ellis so that they learn the rules and
basic strategy. Those students looking for professional chess instruction should take part
in the Chess Instructional Lessons on Monday mornings. The registration form for these
can be downloaded from our website. Please contact Mr. Ellis if you have any questions
about either of these programs. In exciting news, one of our former students who is now in
Year 8, James Spencer, recently won the Australian U14 Chess Championships! He started
his chess here at FPS!! If anyone wants to see his winning game follow this link:

mornings in Mr. Ellis’ classroom (4E) from 8:00am to 8:55am starting on Monday 11

This is a great way to combine learning and fun! The classes will begin with an interactive
lecture by an experienced coach. During the second half of the class children will play
games against each other, putting newly learned strategies into practice. Registration notes
