YEAR 6 RETURNS FROM THEIR TRIP TO THE CAPITAL

Our Year 6 students had an amazing time in Canberra last week. Many thanks to Ms

Costa, Mrs Mackenzie, Mr Guzman, Ms Cavell and Mr Jones who ensured the safety and

comfort of each child over the four days. The staff sang the students praises and reported

that every aspect of the trip went very well even though they were extremely busy. Many

thanks to the teachers’ families who managed around their absence. It’s a big

commitment from our dedicated staff members, and very much appreciated by the

students.

RUN FOREST RUN

Just ONE short week to go and our students are very excited. Please be part of this

wonderful community event. We need more runners/walkers to come and be involved. It

will be a great day for Forestville and one your children will always remember being part

of.

NEW SRC AND LEADERS INITIATIVE

Our SRC have been working on a program initiated by the NSW government to support

the recycling of plastic bottles and cans to fundraise for the school. Many containers

bought from our canteen or surrounding shops can be returned to recycling stations for

10c each rather than be thrown out with our general waste. If every child in the school

brought just one container/bottle into school that would be $68.00 in just one day. The

students have come up with a solution to put some bright yellow bins around the school

to collect these recyclable bottles and containers which will then be stored in a central

location for volunteers to take to any ‘RETURN and EARN’ station.

Beginning from next term each class from 3-5 will be allocated a week to stack the

plastic bottles or containers and we were hoping that some community members will

volunteer to return the bottles and containers for the school. The SRC and school

leaders will be explaining that we want NO alcohol containers brought in from home by

students and NO glass.

If you have containers at home that can be returned for 10c that are not glass or alcohol

containers and would like to donate them to this initiative please send them with your

child who can deposit them in the yellow bins. Cans and plastic bottles must not be

crushed.

The website below explains which containers are acceptable. If you would like to return

your bottles and donate the refund to the school this would be greatly appreciated also.

The students are very excited about using our rubbish to raise funds and will report back

to our community about this project in future newsletters.

https://returnandearn.org.au/

Year 6 managed to get wonderful weather and loved their snow experience. I want to

thank our parent community for preparing your children so well for their visit to

Parliament House and the snow, and for supporting this experience in independence

and growth. Your children will look back on the camp for the rest of their lives as part of

their wonderful educational journey at Forestville.

TELL THEM FROM ME SURVEY

In this newsletter there is a link to the ‘Tell them from me’ Survey. This is our community’s

opportunity to provide some feedback to the school. Please take the time to complete this

short survey as we value your opinions and would like to know which areas we can

improve on and what we are doing well.

GROWTH MINDSET

Developing resilience and life skills in our children is a big part of our role as parents and

educators. Attached is an excerpt from a webpage on parenting which focusses on

disappointment. Even though it is mostly relating to smaller children I thought there was

some pertinent information for us all to remember for our bigger children too.

That's Life: Helping Kids Deal with Disappointment

Disappointment can actually be good for kids -- especially when you teach them how to

bounce back.

How Kids Benefit from Disappointment

Whether it's a trip to the playground that gets ruined by rain or there are no more

chocolate sprinkles at the ice cream shop, life is full of little and big disappointments.

And as much as we'd like to spare our kids from letdowns, we can't -- and that's a good

thing. "When children learn at an early age that they have the tools to get over a

disappointing situation, they'll be able to rely on that throughout childhood and even as

adults," says Robert Brooks, PhD, co-author of Raising Resilient Children. "If you bend

over backwards to shield them from disappointment, you're keeping them from

developing some important skills.

That's not to say you shouldn't lend a hand. "If you help a child learn to ask for realistic

support, lean on others, communicate well, and stay optimistic, you're assisting that child

to handle what life throws at him," says Dr. Brooks. The most effective approach: Tailor

your tactics to how your child currently reacts when a curveball comes his way.

Deputy Principal’s Report

The Tell Them From Me parent survey (Term 3, 2019)

This Term, our school will be participating in the Partners in Learning parent survey,

another part of the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys (student, teacher and parent

surveys) on student engagement. The survey asks parents and carers questions about

different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement.

Running this survey will help our school understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on

their child’s experience at school. These include: communication between parents/carers

and staff, activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the school's support

of learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical

improvements.

The survey is conducted entirely online on smartphones, iPads, tablets, laptops or

computers. The survey will typically take 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely

confidential. The parent survey will be conducted between 26 August and 25 October.

Although participating in the survey is entirely voluntary, your responses are very much

appreciated.

To access the survey for our school go to: http://nsw.tellthemfromme.com/fpsparent.

More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au.

Frequently answered questions about the survey can be found at:

https://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/images/FAQs/TTFM_Parent_Survey_FAQs_Parent_and

_Carers_T3_2019.pdf

The survey is available in 23 languages.

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) for Stage 3 parent survey

We are following up our initial parent forum held in June this year with a parent survey in

our effort to gain further feedback on our proposal to introduce a BYOD policy for Stage 3

students from next year. In addition to a FAQ page, there is a lot of information about a

BYOD program, digital literacy and syllabus requirements on our school website here:

https://forestvill-p.schools.nsw.gov.au/supporting-our-students/towards-byod-for-stage-

3.html.

We invite all parents, particularly parents of Year 4 and Year 5 students to complete the

survey to help us determine whether we will proceed with implementing the BYOD

program in 2020. You can access the survey using the same link: https://forestvill-

p.schools.nsw.gov.au/supporting-our-students/towards-byod-for-stage-3.html

Our Year 5 and 6 students have recently undertakenan education tour of the national capital. Studentswere given the opportunity to participate in a varietyof educational programs with a focus on Australia’shistory, culture, heritage and democracy. TheAustralian Government recognises the importance ofall young Australians being able to visit the nationalcapital as part of their Civics and Citizenshipeducation.

To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursionthe Australian Government is contributing funding of$20 per student under the Parliament and CivicsEducation Rebate program towards those costs. Therebate is paid directly to the school uponcompletion of the excursion. This has already been taken off the cost that was paid for the excursion.

PSSA – 30 August

Stage 3 Canberra Excursion

Last Tuesday Year 6 woke up early to drive down to Canberra and learn more about our

history unit ‘Becoming a Nation’.

We had a fabulous time and we visited some remarkable places: the War Memorial,

Parliament House, the Royal Mint and the National Art Gallery. While visiting Government

House, we met the Governor-General, His Excellency, the Honorable David Hurley. We

even went to the snow where we had great fun sliding down the hills, throwing the odd

snowball and building snowmen. We learned so much and had the best time. We also

learned the procedure for voting and did a role play of passing a bill in Parliament House.

One of the highlights of the camp was the terrifying slide at Questacon. It was so much fun

even Mrs Mac went down. Thank you, Mrs Cavell, Mr Guzman, Mrs Mac, Ms Costa and

Mr Jones for taking 102 kids down on a phenomenal trip.

RAFFLE

Parents, PLEASE help us make a clear $25,000 for our school by selling your child’s

1 green raffle booklet (handed out 1 month ago). The prizes are so good you’ll find them

easy to sell – only 10 tickets in each book. Please return sold books/money to school asap

this week (the raffle will be drawn at midday during the RFR School Fair).

We have 300 more raffle books to sell (come to school office or see us at school pick-up

near Darley St entrance). If half our student body sells a second book, that will make us an

extra $12,000. This is a fabulous opportunity for us as a community to come together as a

dynamic fundraising body. Will you please help us reach our fundraising goals –

replacement of K-2 iPads, flexible learning classrooms, rejuvenation of school oval.

Remember the prize for the student who sells the most raffle tickets = 4 free passes

to Luna Park.
