WELCOME BACK
It has been lovely to welcome the children back today, to hear about their holiday adventures and to see
them fresh after a break and ready to learn.
The staff are well rested and energised for the busy term ahead with lots of professional learning relating
to writing, technology and wellbeing.
We welcome a new member of staff to the school and a returning staff member. Mrs Tracy Stevens is
taking over as class teacher for Year 3C and is very excited to be part of the teaching team working with
our wonderful students, and Mrs Erin Burdett is returning to work with Mrs Renee Phegan on 5PB.
This morning we held our annual ANZAC Service which was beautifully conducted by our Year 6 school
leaders. Polly, Sydney, Sienna, Blaise, Hannah, Toby, Lola and Luca did a wonderful job conducting the
service, our trumpeters, Milly and Tessa were terrific and our band, led by Matthew Hurditch added to the
sense of occasion. Our children demonstrated respect and appreciation of the importance of the event
and remembering the contribution of so many to war. Our guests remarked on the beautiful and
attentive behaviour of our students throughout the service. Thank you to parents and grandparents who
attended.
We look forward to a busy yet rewarding term ahead.
GROWTH MINDSET
Yesterday, as part of our professional learning day, we hosted a 3 hour session for schools
across the Warringah Community of Schools on Growth Mindset. This session was run by Cut
Through Coaching’s Chris Harte, whose director is Dan Haesler, an educator and leader in
mindset, engagement and wellbeing. The learning focussed on open ended questioning
strategies and the role of the teacher in developing mindset. It would be worth reviewing some
of Dan’s videos online to gain an understanding of the importance of mindset for learning both
at school and at home.
Out of School Achievements
Super fish!
Well done to Sydney (6C) who competed in State Swimming in the last week of term. He was
impressive making the finals of the freestyle, backstroke and butterfly. His best result was in butterfly,
where he finished 4th, narrowly missing out on Nationals by just one spot. FPS is extremely proud of
you Sydney!
The following poem entitled “Poppies and Nurses” was written by Jack from 6G to commemorate
ANZAC Day and Military Nurses. The poem was shared during the ceremony.
They say the poppies of Flanders Fields,Are red because of the blood that was spilt,From the soldiers that sleep under the Earth,
The grassy land covering them like a Kilt.
Our soldiers that fought in vicious battles,That saved our land at a cost,
We still remember them to this day,Their memories shall never be lost,
Our Nurses played a vital part,Helping, healing, the wounded,
Dressed like Angels with healing hands,They should always be included,
“It’ll be like sport,” they were told, “Come and join the army!”
But when our brave men and women arrived, they found out,
It was the opposite of Harmony.
So soldiers died, mothers cried,Trying to defeat the Threat,
Thankfully it would all end and be over, Lest we forget.
Thank you for your support, Louisa Wellings

Athletics Carnival
Cross Country Carnival
On the last Tuesday of last term our School
Cross Country event was held at Melwood
Oval. The 11 and 12 year old students ran
3 km while the 8-11's course was 2 km long.
It was a warm day so plenty of toughness
and hydration was needed for those
who pushed themselves hard and did their
absolute best. Thanks to Forest Rugby for
allowing us to use their clubhouse and PA
system and also thanks to the many parents
who supervised the course and were lap
markers. Ribbons and Zone notes will be
given out next Monday at our assembly.
Congratulations to the top 6 finishers in
each event who will progress to the
Warringah Zone event on Friday the 24th of
May at Aquatic Reserve in Frenchs Forest.
Finally, congratulations to Flinders who were
the winning house!!
Chess Coaching Term 2
Professional Chess Coaching at FPS
Chess coaching provided by the Sydney Academy of Chess will start up on Monday mornings in Mr.
Ellis’ classroom (4E) from 8:00am to 8:55am starting on Monday 6th May and finish on Monday 1st
July. This is on top of our regular chess club that is offered Mondays at lunch. Chess is a valuable
activity for children, developing their logical thinking skills, concentration and discipline, as well as
being a source of much enjoyment! This is a great way to combine learning and fun! The classes will
begin with an interactive lecture by an experienced coach. During the second half of the class
children will play games against each other, putting newly learned strategies into practice.
Registration notes can be downloaded from our school website or ask at the school office. Notes
must be returned with payment by Thursday May 2nd. Please see Mr. Ellis if you have any questions.
The program will cost $72 for eight sessions.
Athletics Carnival
Athletics Carnival
Forestville’s Athletics Carnival is Tuesday 7th May 2019. Please ensure your child/children attending
the carnival arrives at school by 8:20am as buses will be leaving at 8:30am.
Students who were successful in the high jump and discus trials at school have been placed on a
list outside 5A and will compete at the carnival. For the other fields events of shot put and long
jump, all students are encouraged to trial in these events on the day.
Thank you to those parents who kindly volunteered to help on the day, it is very much appreciated
as there are many events. You will be contacted this week in preparation for the carnival. A copy of
the program is in this week’s newsletter along with the field events schedule. Please note the
canteen will be open on the day but students will only be permitted to use it at designated times.
Miss Amery and Miss Ingram
We are still seeking a Canteen Co-ordinator to support the excellent service our
Canteen provides to our children.
It isn’t a hugely demanding position and you have the team of the Canteen Treasurer, the
Canteen Assistants and the P&C Executive to support you.
We are currently reviewing all menu items and moving towards healthier and more
nutritious options if this is something you are passionate about.
Please let us know on [email protected] if you would like more
information.

Naplan 2019
NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy – important skills that each child needs to succeed
in school and life. The NAPLAN tests are designed to help us make sure students are on
track with their literacy and numeracy development. Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9
participate in NAPLAN tests for reading, writing, conventions of language (spelling,
grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.
Between 14 May and the 24 May Term 2, our school will participate in NAPLAN Online.
Students do not need to be computer experts to take the NAPLAN test online. Making sure
students have computer skills is part of our school curriculum, and our teachers will ensure
your child is familiar with the online format.
To see the types of questions and interactive features of NAPLAN Online, visit the public
demonstration site. http://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstration-site
If you have any questions about NAPLAN Online, please contact your child’s teacher.

Forestville Band 2019
NSSWE AUTUMN SERIES - FOREST HIGH SCHOOLOur Intermediate and Concert Bands did an awesome job performing at the NSSWEE Autumn
Series at Forest High School late last term. Well done to all involved you played amazingly and
behaved with maturity, you should be very proud of yourselves
INSTRUMENT HANDLING
There have been a few recent instances in Term 1 of students holding/packing away/ dropping
each other’s instruments during rehearsals. As you can guess this does not always end well
especially when students are handling instruments which they are not familiar with.
It would be great if you could remind your child that they should be the only person who handles
their own instruments and that they should not handle or play with other students’ instruments.
We have also had many repairs needed due to instruments being packed and unpacked
incorrectly. It would be a great idea if you could ask your child’s tutor to have a recap on how to
handle and pack/unpack instruments. Thank you.
If you are not able to attend a rehearsal or performance please let your band coordinator know
asap so they can forward this onto the conductors, this way they know who will be absent and
can plan the rehearsals and performances accordingly.
