Educated in Glasgow, she spentthe Second World War in the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS)overseas, before following a varied and rewarding secretarialcareer in the UK and Canada. Her father introduced her to theCairngorms, and she became a hillwalker/scrambler on Scottishhills and in the Canadian Rockies. She continued her childhoodinterest in books, especially travel and exploration, and becamefascinated with the craft of bookbinding. Her husband, Ronald W Clark, was a well-known biographer and mountaineering historian. From 1993 to the present, she generously sponsoredthe bookbinding competition in memory of her father and mother, Magnus and Janet Soutar, and following her death on 18 February 2008, she has enabled the continuance of the competition for which she held such an affection.
