Background •  Developed from the IUPAC Commission on Toxicology, set up under Clinical

Chemistry

•  Founding Chair: Professor W. Sunderman

•  Members largely concerned with toxicity of metallic elements and analytical techniques; this is a continuing interest, with particular reference to chemical speciation

•  Other ongoing concerns have been risk assessment, exposure assessment and pesticides (with Division VI, Environmental Chemistry)

•  Terminology has been a matter of major concern and the current IUPAC approved Glossary of Terms Used in Toxicology is widely used as a standard reference work

Educational Projects •  IUPAC Toxicology Modules

•  http://www.iupac.org/publications/cd/essential_toxicology/ •  PDF format for ease of download and flexibility in use

•  Main objective to provide material from which teachers and lecturers could select what they wanted in accordance with the needs of their own students, supplementing it with examples relevant to the students’ own experience

•  Designed as a series of Powerpoint presentations

•  Targeted at students with a secondary school general science background

Educational Projects •  Toxicology in the classroom: pesticides and health •  The aim of the project is: a) to educate children on protecting themselves

from the harmful effects of pesticides; b) to give a safety culture for use of pesticides. The training material considers safe handling, protection from harmful effects, and how pesticides affect human health and the environment. Training materials have been prepared as CDROM, booklets and flip charts, and will be available on the internet. IUPAC Project 2004-045-1-700
