    Annexure Refresher Training Modules for basic & advanced safety courses

    List of Refresher training items in areas where training cannot be conducted on board ships andemonstration of competence is required every five years:

    1. Personal Survival Techniques (PST)

    1 .1 Survive at sea in the event of ship abandonment:

    1.1.1 don and use an immersion suit1.1.2 safely jump from a height into the water (while wearing a lifejacket)1.1.3 right an inverted liferaft while wearing a lifejacket1.1.4 swim while wearing a lifejacket1.1.5 keep afloat without a lifejacket

    2. Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (FPFF)

    2.1 Fight and extinguish fires:

    2.1.1 use various types of portable fire extinguisher2.1.2 extinguish smaller fires, e.g., electrical fires, oil fires, propane fires2.1.3 extinguish extensive fires with water, using jet and spray nozzles2.1.4 extinguish fires with foam, powder or any other suitable chemical agent2.1.5 enter and pass through, with lifeline but without breathing apparatus, a compartment in

    which high-expansion foam has been injected2.1.6 fight fire in smoke-filled enclosed spaces wearing self-contained breathing apparatus2.1.7 extinguish fire with water or any other suitable fire-fighting agent in an accommodation

    room or simulated engine-room with fire and heavy smoke2.1.8 extinguish oil fire with fog applicator and spray nozzles, dry chemical powder or foam

    applicators

    2.1.9 effect a rescue in a smoke-filled space wearing breathing apparatus

    3. Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boat other than Fast Rescue Boats (PSCRB)

    3.1 Take charge of a survival craft or rescue boat during and after launch:

    3.1.1 right an inverted liferaft while wearing a lifejacket3.1.2 operated off-load and on-load release devices3.1.3 proper resetting of both off-load and on-load release devices

    (using: inflatable liferaft and open or enclosed lifeboat with inboard engine)

    3.2 Operate a survival craft engine:3.2.1 ability to start and operate an inboard engine fitted in an open or enclosed lifeboat

    3.3 Use locating devices, including communication and signaling apparatus and pyrotechnics:3.3.1 use signalling equipment, including pyrotechnics

    4. Advanced Fire Fighting (AFF)

    4.1 Control fire-fighting operations aboard ships:4.1.1 use of water for fire-extinguishing, the effect on ship stability, precautions and corrective

    procedures4.1.2 fire fighting involving dangerous goods

    4.2 Organize and train fire parties:4.2.1 preparation of contingency plans

    4.2.2 composition and allocation of personnel to fire parties4.2.3 strategies and tactics for control of fires in various parts of the ship

    (Practical exercises and instruction conducted under approved and truly realistic trainingconditions, e.g., simulated shipboard conditions)

    4.3 Inspect and service fire-detection and fire-extinguishing systems and equipment:4.3.1 fire-detection systems; fixed fire-extinguishing systems; portable and mobile fire-

    extinguishing equipment, including appliances, pumps and rescue, salvage, life-support,personal protective and communication equipment

    4.3.2 requirements for statutory and classification surveys

    (Practical exercises, using approved equipment and systems in a realistic training environment)

    4 .4 Investigate and compile reports on incidents involving fire:

    4.4.1 assessment of cause of incidents involving fire(Practical exercises in a realistic training environment)
