Joshua protests. Note here that Moses, and this is the point of the text, makes it clear that the power of God is not limited to a set time or place or liturgy. James 5:1-6 Perhaps a reread of chapter 4 first. This quotation contains revolutionary words which raise the hairs on the necks of the rich who kill, are greedy, selfish and corrupt. In the line of the prophets of the First [Old] Testament, this writer condemns the injustice of these folks and most interestingly, to despair! Just as rust corrodes metal, so wealth has corrupted them and will ultimately bring complete emptiness. Mark 9:38-48 Again, in the Mediterranean culture, there are two kinds of honor; ascribed and acquired. A person's honor is always on the line to be tested and pecked at. In this quotation we are dealing with insiders and outsiders and ascribed honor among the disciples of Jesus where members share in the group's honor and strive to main-tain and protect this honor. "We saw a man using your name to expel demons and we tried to stop him because he is not our company."

Note how Jesus deals with this "territorial business;" he weakens the boundaries of the group by approving and accepting the outsider knowing that one who works wonders in this name will not likely betray his name and person. A strong caution against our tendencies toward exclusivism, cliquishness and elitism.

SACRED WORSHIP

Office of the Bishop (24 August 2021) We continue to deal with the consequences of COVID-19 and there is the tendency to “throw caution to the wind.” The basic element of justice, attending to the common good can be put on the back burner . . . consider per diocesan policy of 24 August . . . • If fever or flu-like symptoms are observed, the obliga-tion is not to gather until one is healed. • For the unvaccinated, the use of a mask is encouraged but not required; those who have been vaccinated are welcome to mask. • The pews in the wings will continue to follow the every-other-pew-occupancy model for those who would wel-come more space between themselves and others. • As numbers increase the green cards will be removed from the central pews; do continue to practical and com-mon sense social distancing in the pews and communion procession. • Let’s continue to use the hand sanitizer when entering the church.

World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation

Pope Francis has established in the Ro-man Rite of Catholicism, an annual World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation inspired by the Orthodox Churches who have observed this day of prayer since 1989. Pope Francis reminds us that: “Christians are called to “an ecological conversion whereby the effects of their encounter with Jesus Christ become evi-dent in their relationship with the world

around them.” Thus, “living our vocation to be protectors of God’s handiwork is essential to a life of virtue; it is not an optional or a secondary aspect of our Christian experi-ence.” - from Praise be to you, my Lord, the encyclical of Pope Francis)

Saint Mark Parish will celebrate this day of prayer for the care of creation on October 4 at 6:30 pm using an order for communal prayer: hymns, psalms and scripture, inter-cessions and a renewed commitment to care for creation.

Reflection of Today’s Scripture Texts —Father Slowiak Numbers 11:25-29 Yes, there is some census material in this book but the text is noted to be a treatise on Jacob/Israel who proclaim from their experience and remind us that God does act in human history. The assistants to Moses are seized by the divine presence of God to which

Pastoral Music —Mary Martin

The Handbell Choir will rehearse on Tuesday, September 28, at 3:45 pm, in church. The choir will play at the 10:00 a.m. Liturgy on October 3. Prelude music will be, “They’ll Know We are Christians.”

Parish Choir. It has been a year and a half since we last met and were rehearsing for Holy Week 2020 and we are now ready to meet. We will start by holding short 1-hour rehearsals on October 6 and 20 while maintaining appro-priate distance in the church. It will be a great opportuni-ty for us to reconnect while readying and restoring our voices for choral singing.

Psalm 19:8, 10, 12-13, 14, “Lord you have the words of everlasting life.” In these stanzas of Psalm 19 the Law of the Lord brings refreshment, wisdom, and joy. We praise the perfection of the Law, but also ask God to protect us and to act as a guide, away from sin and thus just judgment.

Homebound Communion —Susan Soriano

In the Liturgy of the Church —Helen Ackermann

It seems that we live in a culture that has become divided into camps. We might use terms like conservative or liberal to differentiate the differences. Even families find themselves in different camps often not able to speak about differences of opinions. In the Church we find a wide variety of opinions as to the proper way to follow Jesus Christ. Instead of focusing on the differences, perhaps we need to focus on what binds us together.

The gospel for this Sunday from the community of Mark, tells us that the disciples seemed concerned that there

were followers of Jesus who performed good deeds in his name even though they did not follow the twelve. Jesus cautioned them. He used the example of someone offering another a cup of water to drink. The important thing is the deed. If whatever is being done builds the Kingdom of God, the importance of following Jesus in a particular way should not be the most important.

Perhaps it is more important to examine how our individual actions have kept others from following Jesus. Jesus uses very vivid images to help his followers, us, to determine how we should rid ourselves of habits that cause a diminishment in building the kingdom of God. The important aspect of being a follower of Jesus is focusing on the deeds that build the Kingdom of God, not worrying whether the other is truly a follower of Jesus in a particular way.

We remember this week Vincent de Paul, priest (Monday) Wenceslaus, martyr, Lawrence Ruiz and companions, martyrs, (Tuesday) Michael, Gabriel and Raphael, archangels (Wednesday) Jerome, priest, doctor of the Church (Thursday) Therese of the Child Jesus, virgin, doctor of the Church (Friday) Guardian Angels (Saturday)

St. Lawrence Ruiz and companions, married man, martyr (1600-1637) Lawrence Ruiz lived at a time when Europeans were turning Asian Cities into colonies. The Japanese were afraid that they would be conquered by Europeans. They not only tried to shut out the European influence but religions as well. Christians were murdered or forced to leave Japan. Lawrence was born in the Philippines. His parents were Christians. He married and had three children. He joined a secret missionary team of Dominicans and went to Japan. A storm blew his ship to the island of Okinawa which is off the coast of Japan. He and his companions were taken to Nagasaki where they were tortured and killed. Nagasaki at one time had a number of Christians. Over 50,000 Catholics were killed or driven from their homes. Lawrence Ruiz if the first Filipino martyr to be canonized.

CATHOLIC EDUCATION/FORMATION

Catholic Education and Formation Committee Minute Summary for 14 September 2021 01. Present: Amy Adamus, Mary H. Hart, Tina Meyer, Albert Romportl, and Father Slowiak. Excused: Rick Svennes 02. The Prayer marked Ordinal 24 03. The minutes of the June 8, 2021 meeting were accept-ed as written. 04. Chapter 3 of Pope Francis' Encyclical, On Fraternity and Social Friendship was discussed. Pope Francis reflected on the concept of an ‘open world’ noting the biblical starting point that human persons are created to and have the ability

to form communities, that closed groups are not the source of happiness. Each person has a dignity equal to our own, thus social friendship involves having concern that transcends man-made borders and concerning this he writes that a “planned, global universalism cannot be aimed at plundering or dominating others. This is false universalism. Migration should be avoided by creating the conditions within each nation that allow people to remain, not leave, when people leave there are four key words: welcome, protect, promote and integrate. “When a nation opens itself to others, it must take care not to lose its own culture and richness. A nation can welcome others only when they are firmly grounded in their place, if not the fear of new people leads to rejection and erecting walls resulting in a place that is narrow, weary and infirm even as its people sit among their riches. No nation can develop the common good of its people if it remains isolated.” 05. Newman Catholic Schools Education Commission Meeting of 25 May, 2021. One comment. The note about a potential mandatory purchase of SCRIP seems to be a tuition increase in disguise. 06. NCS: Saint Mark with COVID-19 Contingency Plan. A. Catechetics/Faith Formation with COVID-19 Contingen-cy Plan. A. Seven points of the COVID-19 Contingency Plan will be discussed with parents at the 22 September Parent Meeting. As NCS most of the policies in place last year will remain active. Second, the report noted the service opportu-nities that are scheduled for all grades. 08. NCES: St Mark September 30 Sacrament of Eucharist, School No parents or parish members ADULT ENRICHMENT — Father Slowiak

5) Reflecting on the Sacrament of Eucharist. Why bread and wine? Part two. During the celebration of the Seder (Passover) Meal there is a testimony of the experience of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob/Israel empierce with God and during the ritual reading adults take four cups of wine representing the four stages of the divine salvation and redemption of Israel from slav-ery under the Egyptians that are recalled during the meal.

1. "I will take you out . . . . " [Salvation from harsh labor] 2. "I will save/heal you . . . . " [Salvation from servitude] 3. "I will redeem you . . . ." [Salvation by crossing the Sea of Reeds] 4. "I will take you as a nation . . . ." [Becoming a nation at Sinai founded on reverencing God and acting justly toward others, i.e., the Ten Commandments].

A fifth cup is poured for Prophet Elijah during the second half of the Seder in anticipation that Elijah will visit during the celebration and announce the arrival of the Messiah. This fifth cup represent future redemption, it is left uncon-sumed.

The Seder is celebrated annually and it is understood that individual family celebrations are elements of one univer-sal celebration with all who have gone before the present generation. The Seder is on-going and gives the Jewish community an identity and they experience spiritually the four stages of redemption. During the Seder those cele-brating enter into and experience the four stages of re-demption in the eternal presence of God which has no past or future as we count time.

We keep in mind that the ritual of the Sedar (Passover) developed over many generations and is the ritual of a settled, not a migrating people. - To be continued.

Regarding the Cross of Jesus Pope Francis in Preov, Slovakia, Sept. 14, 2021, a digest of a report by Inés San Martín, at https://cruxnow.com

Pope Francis celebrated the Byzantine Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom on September 14, the Feast of Exultation of the Holy Cross.

Pope Francis noted that we hear words about the crucifix of Jesus but are tempted to prefer a God who is powerful and triumphant. He said, “How often do we long for a Christianity of winners, a triumphalist Christianity that is important and influential, that re-ceives glory and honor? Yet a Christianity without a cross is a world Christianity and shows itself to be sterile” and he spoke about the centrality of the message of the cross in Christianity: “God saves us by allowing all the evil of our world to be unleashed upon himself.”

Inés San Martín writes that Pope Francis said crucifixes are found all over including as jewelry, in homes, cars and pockets. But they have no real use, Pope Francis added, “unless we stop to look at the crucified Jesus and open our hearts to him, unless we let ourselves be struck by the wounds he bears for our sake, unless our hearts swell with emotion and we weep before the God wounded for love of us.”

Second, People Francis talked about the Cross leading believers to “bear witness,” and that there’s “no lack of opportunities” for bear-ing witness to Jesus in the world today, “Yet our witness can be weakened by worldliness and mediocrity,” he said.

“The cross demands instead a crystal clear, transparent, under-standable testimony . . . . the cross is not a flag to wave, but the pure source of a new way of living. Which? That of the Gospel, that of the Beatitudes. A witness who bears the cross in his or her heart, and not only on his or her neck, views no one as an enemy, but everyone as a brother or sister for whom Jesus gave his life. A wit-ness of the cross does not dwell on the wrongs of the past or keep lamenting the present,” Francis said.

SCRIPTURE TEXTS - Ordinal 27

Opening Prayer: Lord God, in meditating on your holy word, it is often difficult to understand what you want from me. Help me to realize that my love for you is always based on relationship. Just as husband and wife in relationship come to know one another, help me to come to know you through your son, Jesus Christ, he who is Lord forever and ever. Amen.

GENESIS 2:18-24 The LORD God said: "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a suitable partner for him." So the LORD God formed out of the ground various wild animals and various birds of the air, and he brought them to the man to see what he would call them; whatever the man called each of them would be its name. The man gave names to all the cattle, all the birds of the air, and all wild animals; but none proved to be the suitable partner for the man.

So the LORD God cast a deep sleep on the man, and while he was asleep, he took out one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. The LORD God then built up into a woman the rib that he had taken from the man. When he brought her to the man, the man said: "This one, at last, is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; this one shall be called 'woman, ' for out of 'her man' this one has been taken." That is why a man leaves his father and mother and clings to his wife, and the two of them become one flesh.

PSALM 128:1-2, 3, 4-5, 6 R. (cf. 5) May the Lord bless us all the days of our lives. Blessed are you who fear the LORD, who walk in his ways! For you shall eat the fruit of your handiwork; blessed shall you be, and favored. R. May the Lord bless us all the days of our lives.

Your wife shall be like a fruitful vine in the recesses of your home; your children like olive plants around your table. R. May the Lord bless us all the days of our lives.

Behold, thus is the man blessed who fears the LORD. The LORD bless you from Zion: may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem all the days of your life. R. May the Lord bless us all the days of our lives.

May you see your children's children. Peace be upon Israel! R. May the Lord bless us all the days of our lives. HEBREWS 2:9-11 Brothers and sisters: He "for a little while" was made "lower than the angels," that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

For it was fitting that he, for whom and through whom all things exist, in bringing many children to glory, should make the leader to their salva-tion perfect through suffering. He who consecrates and those who are being consecrated all have one origin. Therefore, he is not ashamed to call them 'brothers.'

MARK 10:2-16 The Pharisees approached Jesus and asked, "Is it lawful for a husband to divorce his wife?" They were testing him. He said to them in reply, "What did Moses command you?" They replied, "Moses permitted a husband to write a bill of divorce and dismiss her." But Jesus told them, "Because of the hardness of your hearts he wrote you this command-ment. But from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. So they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, no human being must separate." In the house the disciples again ques-tioned Jesus about this. He said to them, "Whoever divorces his wife and marries another, commits adultery against her; and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery."

And people were bringing children to him that he might touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this he became indignant and said to them, "Let the children come to me; do not prevent them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Amen, I say to you, whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it." Then he embraced them and blessed them, placing his hands on them.

Concluding Prayer: Give me the grace to accept the kingdom of God like a child, help me to understand how I am to live my life in rela-tionship and in community with others. Teach be to love others as I ought. I make this prayer in the name of Jesus, he who is Lord

forever and ever. Amen.
