Reflection of Today’s Scripture Texts —Father Slowiak Acts of the Apostles 1:1-11. A response to two questions from their experience: what happened to the body of Jesus after the resurrection and second, the fact that the early believers had no recognition in the religious or political sphere, i.e., no power, yet the experience is the

opposite. What is the source of this power so dispropor-tionate to the size of the community? The testimony is that the power came to them from an awareness of the resurrection of the body of Jesus and with Jesus sharing the power of the Holy Spirit. Ephesians 1:17-23. Paul teaches that the presence of Jesus in the Church is converted into a cosmic rule. God, through the ministry of the Son has redeemed humankind from power rightfully belonging God, assumed by human princes, king and queens, and then used inappropriately. This claim for God and for Jesus envisions significant political repercussions. God’s power is characterized by mercy, compassion, forgiveness and caring. Matthew 28:16-20. When this gospel version is being written the community is aware of the source of their power in the holy Spirit to carry the new creation in Jesus to the ends of the earth. It is a misinterpretation to regard this power as restricted to official leaders or to clergy alone today; the power of the holy Spirit is given to the Church, to all the people of God “all the days, right up to the consummation of the age.” (The Church, despite it‘s history of conflict, infidelity, corruption and sin, provides evidence that Jesus’ promise has been kept and will be kept.)

Pastoral Music —Mary Martin

Psalm 47, “God mounts his throne to shouts of joy; a blare of trumpets for the Lord.” Jesus made a promise in last week’s gospel, “I will ask the Father and he will give you another Advocate to be with you always,” Ever since, we have been making disciples of all nations. A good start is to follow the command in today’s Psalm 47: “All you peoples, clap your hands, shout to God with cries of gladness.” We call it liturgical movement, enthusiastic praise of God, and “songs” of gladness.” (John Bell, 1995, The

Iona Community)

Psalm 47 is one of the most triumphant psalms in the whole book of Psalms. It paints a picture we can clearly see in our minds as well as hear, with the sounds of trum-pets blaring and joyful shouts of the crowds. Jesus words are triumphant, he tells the disciples, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me.” It is fitting that our psalm ends with the affirmation “[f]or king of all the earth is God . . . God reigns over all the nations.”

In the Liturgy of the Church —Helen Ackermann

We are told in the Scriptures that the apostles had a number of experiences of the resurrected Jesus. During this Easter Season, we have grappled with the meaning of resurrection. Do we understand it or not? It must have been strange for the disciples. They tried to process what

they had experienced and yet they were not sure. The words from the community of Matthew tells of their last time with the Risen Lord; “When they saw him, they worshiped, but they doubted.” In a sense, Jesus makes it simple. There is no more room for doubt because now there is only the challenge. “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”

During these difficult days, we too might experience doubts. We live in a time of uncertainty, but as we deepen our relationship with the Risen Lord, we can grow into a sense of certainty because Jesus promises that through the Holy Spirit, he will be with us always, even to the end of the age. Reading a reflection by Don Talafous, OSB from St. John’s Abbey, I read a quote by Karl Rahner, “. . . when one dares to pray in silent darkness and knows one is heard”, Rahner believes it is the Holy Spirit, the Advocate, who is working within us. Father Talafous develops his meditation on prayer indicating that even if we do not see change we continue to pray because our relationship is built on hope. We have the words of Jesus who promises that he will always be with us. Even if at times we are filled with doubt we build on faith, hope and love. After all, what else can we do if we are to be the presence of Christ in the world, bringing the good news of salvation to those whom we encounter? We give thanks for this relationship of love of which we are a part. We set aside doubt and get to work. That is what Jesus Christ asks of us.

PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL Minute Summary for 15 May 2020

Consultative Agenda, Fr Slowiak

Funeral Luncheons. I have been in conversation with Karen Tauferner regarding the current concerns about "gatherings." Even outside of civil proclamations about opening the economy, we would like to go on public record that as a parish we find it best to not to offer funeral luncheons through 31 December 2020. We will evaluate through the summer the status of gatherings and whether said can be provided in the building that is shared with children and students of the school or if we can continue with proposed precautionary measures.

Consensus: Per the membership, the proposal is practical and proper.

PARISH FINANCE COUNCIL Budget Committee We welcome your continued financial support during these uncertain times. Your tithe is appreciated and it can be mailed in or brought to the Parish Office - call ahead.

Or, go to https://diolc.org/st-mark-parish-rothschild/ to use the “Online Offertory” designated to St. Mark Parish, Rothschild, set up for us by the Diocese of La Crosse.

Regarding the Diocesan Annual Appeal Parish Goal: $88,240.00 Received as of 17 May, $59,027.76 from 243 parish members who have contributed 66.89% of the goal with an average contribution of $243. $29,212. from the goal.

Thank you for your continued support during this time when so much of life is in a state of change. Father Slowiak.

LOOKING OUT THE WINDOW — Father Slowiak

A parish member asked, "How does the Catholic Church understand religious freedom1 that was mentioned in the last Looking Out the Window?

I quote from the Second Vatican Council, Declaration on Religious Freedom,2 Paragraph 7, dated December 7, 1965

"The right to religious freedom is exercised in human socie-ty: hence, its exercise is subject to certain regulatory norms. In the use of all freedoms the moral principle of personal and social responsibility is to be observed. In the exercise of their rights, individual men and social groups are bound by the moral law to have respect both for the rights of others and for their own duties toward others and for the common welfare of all. Men are to deal with their fellows in justice and civility.3" 1Complete text: http://www.vatican.va/archive/hist_councils/ii_vatican_council/documents/vat-ii_decl_19651207_dignitatis-humanae_en.html Summary: http://shaunmcafee.com/resources/documents-vatican-ii/summary-dignitatis-humanae/ 2Freedom, whether civil or religious is not the license to do whatever one wants to do. Both are subject to regulatory norms. 3Considering the date, let's consider that this sentence includes women.

PARISH OFFICE Parish Offices will be closed, Monday, May 25, in observance of Memorial Day.

SCRIPTURE TEXTS—Pentecost

Opening Prayer: Lord God Almighty, as I read the Scriptures in preparation of the celebration of Eucharist, fill my heart with a desire to welcome the Holy Spirit to fill me with the courage and strength to follow the way of Your Son, Jesus Christ, He who is Lord forever and ever. Amen. ACTS 2:1-11 When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together. And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven staying in Jerusalem. At this sound, they gath-ered in a large crowd, but they were confused because each one heard them speaking in his own language. They were astounded, and in amazement they asked, “Are not all these people who are speaking Galileans? Then how does each of us hear them in his native language? We are Parthians, Medes, and Elamites, inhabitants of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya near Cyrene, as well as travelers from Rome, both Jews and converts to Judaism, Cretans and Arabs, yet we hear them speaking in our own tongues of the mighty acts of God.” PSALM 104:1, 24, 29-30, 31, 34 R. Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth.

Bless the LORD, O my soul! O LORD, my God, you are great indeed! How manifold are your works, O Lord! the earth is full of your creatures; R. Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth.

May the glory of the LORD endure forever; may the LORD be glad in his works! Pleasing to him be my theme; I will be glad in the LORD. R. Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth.

If you take away their breath, they perish and return to their dust. When you send forth your spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the earth. R. Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth. 1 CORINTHIANS 12:3b-7, 12-13 Brothers and sisters: No one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit. There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; there are different forms of service but the same Lord; there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone. To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit. As a body is one though it has many parts, and all the parts of the

body, though many, are one body, so also Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons, and we were all given to drink of one Spirit. Sequence Veni, Sancte Spiritus Come, Holy Spirit, come! And from your celestial home shed

source of all our store! Come, within our bosoms shine. You, of comforters the best; You, the soul’s most welcome guest; Sweet refreshment here below; In our labor, rest most sweet; Grateful coolness in the heat; Solace in the midst of woe. O most blessed Light divine, Shine within these hearts of yours, and our inmost being fill! Where you are not, we have naught, nothing good in deed or thought, nothing free from taint of ill. Heal our wounds, our strength renew; On our dryness pour your dew; Wash the stains of guilt away: Bend the stubborn heart and will; Melt the frozen, warm the chill; Guide the steps that go astray. On the faithful, who adore and confess you, evermore in your sevenfold gift descend; Give them virtue’s sure reward; Give them your salvation, Lord; Give them joys that never end. Amen. Alleluia.

JOHN 20:19-23 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained. Reflection Questions: 1. Jesus brings peace? How do we ring peace to those we

encounter during our lives? 2. In the second reading it is told to us that we each have

different gifts that we are to share. What are the gifts that you have been given and how do you share them with others?

3. Why is Pentecost known as the birth of the Church? What do you understand to be the meaning of the word Church?

Concluding Prayer: Lord God, as I celebrate the Feast of Pentecost, instill in me a deep desire to recognize that I am part of the Church, the Body of Christ in the world. Help me to use my gifts to help others know that Jesus is truly the Way, the Truth, and the Life. I make this prayer in His name, He who is Lord forever and ever.
