May 14, 2017 Fifth Sunday of Easter Dear Parishioners and Friends:

As the numbers of disciples continued to grow, the Hellenists complained against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribu-tion.” [Acts 6: 1]

With comforting realism, the Acts of the Apostles presents the early church’s very human nature. A dispute breaks out among widows about food. In a way that both comforts and challenges us, the Holy Spirit helps the com-munity resolve its difficulties so that deeper unity develops even as healthy diversity flourishes. Crucial insights for today’s church: 1- The resolution keeps people in rather than driving them out. 2- The diverging perspectives that prompt the dispute prove less important than the common faith that binds the two sides together. 3- The Hebrew-speaking majority (Jews) do not dismiss the concerns of the Greek-speaking minority (outsider Gentiles). 4-Indeed, the “disgruntled minority” is invited to surface “indigenous leadership,” so that the community’s structure is changed with its ministry expanded in creative continui-ty, enhancing both worship and witness.

In the Gospel today Jesus is working on the same lesson, teaching his disciples: “Do not let your hearts be troubled … in my Father’s house there are many dwelling places.” (Jn 14:1,2) For us today as believers, that future begins in the present. Though detoured by unforeseen ob-stacles and imperiled by inevitable dangers, we are already in the Father’s house, the community in which Jesus re-veals himself in Word, Eucharist, and in one another, di-verse yet one in Jesus, “the way, the truth, the life.”

Questions for the week: What issues can we ask the Spirit to guide us through to reconcile different groups? How does language make this difficult? How do we bridge it with our different gifts?

Farewell Gus Karle! This much loved father and friend

to so many in our parish and our town has gone before us

to join his beloved Barbara in glory. Thank you, O

God, for his shining witness to Christ. We share the

sorrow of his family's loss but more we express our grat-

Thank you CCW! As Pastor, I thank the Council of Catholic Women for the remarkable attention to the hospi-tality needs of others this past week, especially the wonder-ful reception they gave the Bishop and all the Confirmation teens and their families on Tuesday evening. But even more for the flexibility and abundance that they shared with us in meeting the needs of the extended Karle Family and friends through their care for them Wednesday afternoon. The whole town seemed to come inside our Church on Wednesday and the CCW was there to welcome them. Gracias! Fr. Bob

A Suggestion for On-line Bible Studies: If you have not tried it, I would suggest that Lumina http://lumina.bible.org/is a wonderful site for individual Bible study. You can use several different translations of the Bible, and you simply go to the book you want to study, and the chapter, and scroll to the appropriate verses. On the right hand screen is a section with language translation and my favorite, Consta-ble’s commentary. Dr. Constable is a professor emeritus of Bible Studies at Dallas Theological Seminary, and he writes understanda-ble, clear commentary on the Bible, which is well referenced, and which has easy to use links to allow you to cross-check other verses. It has been very helpful for me, in conjunction with the US Conference of Catholic Bishops http://usccb.org/ daily Mass readings. -Adrienne Butler

The New Catholic Answer Bible: NABRE. This is our parish favorite bible with RCIA Catechism inside as well as the best

translation. Leather bound with larger print, $35. We expect the new order in this week. See Barbara in the office.

    Easter Evangelization Encounter

During the Easter season, we will present a series of reflections on the meaning of Evangelization and Hispanic ministry to our entire parish. The third session entitled “Walking Together with Jesus” will be presented by Fr. Bob Cushing this Wednesday, May 17th at 7:15 PM, in the Parish Hall. [last week’s class was postponed because of Gus Karle’s funeral.]

We will look for the presence of the risen Christ in each one of us as we discuss our common vocation to be missionary disci-ples. St. Teresa of Avila reminded us “God has no body on this earth but ours and no hands on but ours.” Please join us and dis-cover how you can be the hands of Christ for your fellow parish-ioners.

    A word from Pope Francis:

“The Eucharist …is not a prize for the perfect but a pow-erful medicine and nourishment for the weak.”

    Important Message:

Our parish will not have Vacation Bible School this summer.
