A MESSAGE FROM YOUR PASTOR

Dear Parishioners,

Two weekends ago, I attended the annual convention of the Knights and Ladies of the Holy Sepulchre. I have been a member of the Knights since 2009. The primary purpose of this organization is to support our fellow Christians in the Holy Land. The Christians, who are predominantly Roman Catholic, are a very small minority in Israel. The overwhelming majority of the people living in the Holy Land are Jewish and Muslim. Many Christians have migrated from the Holy Land because of poverty and lack of employment. The Knights of the Holy Sepulchre help fund Catholic parishes and schools, including Bethlehem University. We are trying to keep a Christian presence in the Holy Land and it appears to be an uphill battle. By providing better education, we are hoping more Christians will remain in the Holy Land. If you are interested in joining the Knights and Ladies of the Holy Sepulchre, please see me or Larry and Kathleen Albright from our parish.

While attending this convention in downtown St. Louis, we were aware of what was happening in the City of St. Louis. As everyone knows, Judge Timothy Wilson acquitted former officer Jason Stockley of first-degree murder charges in the shooting of 24 year old Anthony Lamar Smith in 2011. As a result of this decision, many people protested in the streets of downtown St. Louis and other parts of the metropolitan area.

Archbishop Carlson said that prayer and solidarity are the answers to the verdict, not violence and discord. “We must ask God for peace in our own hearts and share it with those around us,” he said. “Violence does not lead to peace and justice---they are opposing forces and cannot co-exist. I implore each of you to choose peace! Reject the false and empty hope that violence will solve problems. Violence only creates more violence,” he said.

No matter where we stand on Judge Wilson’s verdict, I think we can all agree that race relations in metropolitan St. Louis need to improve. Our community is truly divided in this area. Through our Tithing Outreach program, we financially support both St. Elizabeth, Mother of St. John the Baptist School and St. Augustine’s Parish in north St. Louis City. We also provide Christmas presents for St. Augustine’s parish and the Wellston area. Hopefully, in the future we might be able to see more personal interaction between those parishes and our parish. Personal dialogue can certainly promote better understanding and greater respect among all of us.

ADORATION OF THE LORD

“Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament is the Living Heart of each of our parishes,”

Pope Paul VI

Visit Jesus. He, with His Living and Sacred Heart, is beating and waiting for you in our

Chapel. Various hours are in need of an additional committed adorer, can you help? Adoration begins Monday morning at 7:00 a.m. & continues through Saturday at 7:45 a.m. There is always a need for faithful committed adorers, will you be one? For more information, or to commit to a specific Holy Hour, contact: Sharon at 636-447-3673 or Janice at 636-447-4339 stjoecot.org/faith/sacraments/eucharist/ [email protected],

PRAY FOR PRIESTS What is a Catholic priest? He is a man ordained by Christ to continue the Savior’s work of Redemption

until the end of time. He is therefore a person specially chosen to proclaim the Gospel of salvation and lead

the faithful to their final destination. But he is mainly a person who receives unique powers at ordination to

consecrate and sacrifice, and to reconcile a sinful people with their God.

(Servant of God, Fr. John A. Hardon, S.J.)

PLEASE PRAY WITH US IN THE ADORATION CHAPEL Every Monday morning 8:30-9:30 & Tuesday evening 7:00-8:00 as we Pray for the Sanctification of Priests & Holy Vocations to

the Holy Priesthood & Consecrated Religious Life. Questions, call: Sharon 636-447-3673

12 FRUITS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

In September, we are focusing on the fruit of Gentleness.

Gentleness is a practice that involves having a calm temperament; we act calmly & stay away from actions that might lead us, or others to a place of anger or resentment.

It’s our great duty & responsibility to share Christ’s gentleness with the world. We have a duty as young people in our rough world to be the one who extends a hand to those who need it. It is our job to remain calm when our first reaction is to get upset, & to remain kind when everything inside us wants to be unkind. We are called to be gentle, as Christ has first been gentle with us.

Here are some practical ways you can exhibit gentleness in your life • Prayer: Turn to Jesus in Adoration as often as

possible. Ask the Holy Spirit to increase the fruit of gentleness in your life.

The Parish Pulse

Healthy Minds. Healthy Lives.

A National Health Observance in October is Mental Illness Awareness

Mental illness is any disease or condition affecting the brain that influences the way a person thinks, feels, behaves, and/or relates to others and to his or her surroundings. Although the symptoms of mental illness can range from mild to severe & are different depending on the type of mental illness, a person with an untreated mental illness often is unable to cope with life's daily routines and demands. Although the exact cause of mental illnesses is not known, research shows that many of these conditions are caused by a combination of genetic, biological, psychological, & environmental factors. One thing is for sure -- mental illness is not the result of personal weakness or a character defect, & recovery from mental illness is not simply a matter of will & self-discipline.

MENTAL HEALTH AMERICA (MHA)

Founded in 1909 - is the nation's leading community-based nonprofit dedicated to helping Americans achieve wellness by living mentally healthier lives. Their work is driven by a commitment to promote mental health as a critical part of overall wellness, including prevention for all, early identification and intervention for those at risk, integrated health, behavioral health and other services for those who need them, and recovery as a goal.

MIND YOUR MIND Taking a mental health screening is one of the quickest and easiest ways to determine whether you are experiencing symptoms of a mental health condition. Mental health conditions are real, common and treatable. And recovery is possible. At http://www.mentalhealthamerica.net/mental-health-screening-tools you will find these Screening tools:

♦ The Depression Screen is for individuals who are feeling overwhelming sadness.

♦ The Anxiety Screen will help if you feel that worry and fear affect your day to day life.

♦ The Bipolar Screen for individuals who have mood swings, unusual or extreme shifts in mood/energy

♦ The PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) Screen is for those who are bothered by a traumatic life event

♦ The Alcohol or Substance Use Screen will help determine if your use of alcohol or drugs needs help.

♦ The Youth Screen is for young people (age 11-17) who are concerned that their emotions, attention, or behaviors might be signs of a problem.

♦ The Parent Screen is for parents of young people to determine if their child’s emotions, attention, or behaviors might be signs of a problem

♦ The Psychosis Screen is for young people (age 12-35) who feel like their brain is playing tricks on them (seeing, hearing or believing things that don't seem real or quite right).

♦Following a Mental Health America screening, you will be provided with information, resources and tools to discuss the results with a provider.
