A MESSAGE FROM YOUR PASTOR

Dear Parishioners,

On Wednesday, March 6th, we begin our annual journey through Lent. Lent begins with Ash Wednesday and ends

on Holy Thursday evening. Lent begins with ashes, the solemn reminder of repentance and the Church’s call to conversion.

For forty days, we are to remember and become what baptism made us—the adopted children of God. As the gospel

reminds us on Ash Wednesday, Lent is a time for prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Through these three disciplines, we grow

in holiness and closeness to our Lord, Jesus Christ. Masses on Ash Wednesday will be celebrated at 6:30 a.m., 8:00 a.m., 1:30

p.m. (all school Mass) and 7:00 p.m.

Lent is also a time in which our catechumens and candidates are preparing themselves for entrance into our faith

community and Church on the Easter Vigil. I would ask that you remember these people in your prayers during Lent.

During Lent, I encourage everyone to come to daily Mass at 6:30 a.m. or 8:00 a.m. On the Fridays of Lent, we will have

Stations of the Cross at 7:00 p.m. On Good Friday, the Stations of the Cross will be at 12 noon. Also, from Monday through

Saturday morning, we will continue to have the Blessed Sacrament on exposition in our Eucharistic Chapel.

During the season of Lent, our holy father, Pope Francis, and the American bishops have outlined obligatory fast and

abstinence for the following days. Ash Wednesday, March 6th, and Good Friday, April 19th, are days of abstinence for all

Catholics over the age of 14. On these two days, fast as well as abstinence is also obligatory for those from the ages of 18 to

59. Abstinence means abstinence from meat. Fast means one full meal a day, with two smaller meals and nothing between

meals (liquids are permitted). No Catholic should lightly excuse himself/herself from this obligation. All other Fridays of

Lent are days of abstinence from meat. Here again, Catholics should not hold themselves lightly excused, but if there is a

serious health problem, this obligation would not apply.

In the Gathering Area of the church, there are Lenten booklets for adults and families. For adults, we have The Saving

Passion by Henri Nouwen and for families we have Peeking through the Palms. At the doors of the church, there are

envelopes from the Society of the Propagation of the Faith. This is for the Society’s annual membership drive. If you are

interested in becoming a member, please complete the envelope and place it in the collection basket. Rice bowls will be

available at the doors of the church, too. At the end of Lent, you can return them to the church and the proceeds will be

forwarded to Catholic Relief Services.

Finally, at the Christmas Masses, many of you received the book, The Biggest Lie in the History of Christianity, by

Matthew Kelly. This will make excellent reading for Lent. In conjunction with that book, you are invited to go to

DynamicCatholic.com/Lent and become part of Best Lent Ever with daily spiritual reflections for every day of Lent.

Finally, our Parish Mission is March 10, 11 & 12th. The priest giving the mission is Fr. Paul Hoesing. He is a rural native

of the Omaha Archdiocese and currently the Dean of Seminarians and Director of Human Formation at Kenrick-Glennon

Seminary. He will be talking about how we can grow in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Please set aside these

dates for a spiritually enriching Parish Mission which will take place in the church beginning at 7:00 p.m. each evening. He

will be preaching at all the Masses next weekend, March 9th and 10th.

CATHOLIC TEACHING ON ORGAN DONATION

Roman Catholics view organ and tissue donation as an act of charity and

love; as is stated by Saint John Paul II:

“The Gospel of life is to be celebrated above all in daily living, which should

be filled with self-giving love for others. . . . Over and above such outstand-

ing moments, there is an everyday heroism, made up of gestures of sharing,

big or small, which build up an authentic culture of life. A particularly praise-

worthy example of such gestures is the donation of organs, ‘performed in an

ethically acceptable manner ’, with a view to offering a chance of health and

even of life itself to the sick who sometimes have no other hope”

(Evangelium Vitae, no. 86,).

The Catechism of the Catholic Church (no. 2296) states:

“Organ transplants are not morally acceptable if

the donor or those who legitimately speak for him

have not given their informed consent. Organ

transplants conform with the moral law & can be

meritorious if physical & psychological dangers &

risk incurred by the donor are proportionate to the

good sought for the recipient. It is morally inad-

missible directly to bring about the disa-

bling mutilation or death of a human being, even

in order to delay the death of other persons.”

The United States Catholic Bishops' Confer-

ence (USCCB) has stated: “The transplantation

of organs from living donors is morally permissible when the anticipated

benefit to the recipient is proportionate to the harm done to the donor, provid-

ed that the loss of such organ(s) does not deprive the donor of life itself nor

of the functional integrity of his body.”

In 2012, Raymond Cardinal Burke, then Cardinal Prefect of the Su-

preme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura, wrote: “…...Organ donation

is acceptable provided the loss of such organs does not deprive the donor of

life itself or bodily integrity, and provided the donor or his proxy has given

explicit consent. Of special concern regarding the transplantation of vital

organs is knowing when a donor is really dead. There may be, by some, a

temptation to anticipate death because of the debatable effectiveness of trans-

plantation of vital organs (such as the heart) from an authentically dead per-

son. Death, according to our Catholic Faith, is when the soul separates from

the body. This is more profound than a medical declaration that a person is

“brain dead” or that “the heart has stopped beating.” Where questions of

justice are involved, such as those involving the taking of life, one must be

certain that real death, and not merely clinical death, has occurred. The mere

probability of death is not a sufficient moral basis for initiating the transplan-

tation of such organs as the heart”

Students are nominated by faculty for being witnesses of Christ in

our school by showing the virtue of the month. Witnesses for the

month of February for showing the virtue of cheerfulness are:

Audrina Lippmann (K) for she always smiles through all of IEW

saying, "I like to work hard". When the whistle blows and recess is

over, she quickly gets into her line position with a smile on her face.

Addy Schroeder (1) for she always has a positive thing to say to her

classmates and in ALL situations. She brings happiness and joy to

our class in every situation. Addy looks on the bright side and shares

it with her classmates. Brody Stann (3) always finds the good in all

situations. He has a positive attitude in his school work and doesn't

let things get him down. Libby Stann (7) is always happy and smiling

even when things don't go her way. If she finds herself unsuccessful

in any way, she does not hesitate to ask how she can improve. She

has a positive and cheerful attitude even in the face of adversity. Ava

Diebling (7) is positive in the face of anything she may

deem "not fun" or "boring" or even "hard." Ava puts on

a smile and a good attitude and gives herself, students

around her and even her teachers a positive pep talk in

just about any adverse situation.

The Power of Family Rituals

Rituals are powerful; they help us see what we

otherwise might forget to look for. The same is true

at home. Daily rituals and family traditions serve to

show us and our children who we are and what

matters to us. Here are some good opportunities to

introduce rituals into your family life.

Bedtime

Bedtime rituals can be a challenge at the end of a

long day, but children often need help falling

asleep as nighttime fears arise. Take this oppor-

tunity to introduce bedtime prayers to your chil-

dren and to help them develop trust in God as our

protector and provider. See this time spent as an

investment in your child’s spiritual and emotional

wellness. As your children grow, don’t abandon the

bedtime ritual, but adapt it to suit their needs.

Birthdays and Baptismal Days

Birthday celebrations are great ways to emphasize

that your children are unique and loved. Recogniz-

ing, in some significant way, your children’s baptis-

mal day is a great way to celebrate their relation-

ship with God. A simple way to celebrate a baptis-

mal anniversary is to light a candle, explain why

you gave your child his or her name, then spend a

moment talking about the goodness you see in that

child. In this way you will nurture the natural spiritu-

ality of your children and demonstrate that there is

more to them than they probably know.

Every Day

Some of the best family fun can be had by devel-

oping little rituals that are unique to your lives to-

gether. There's many simple practices that cele-

brate the sacred. Perhaps every Friday night your

family eats pizza, piles on the couch together, and

watches a movie. Or perhaps New Year’s Day is

your family’s day to go on a long hike in the woods.

Value these rituals and know that they are anchors

for your kids in a turbulent world.

Meals

Eating a family meal on a regular basis is a pro-

found ritual. Begin the meal with prayer. Make time

for everyone to share something about their day.

Try fun meal-time questions like those in The Meal

Box, they will encourage conversation, laughter,

and sharing. Above all, make the table a welcom-

ing, come-as-you-are place. Welcome friends,

neighbors, and those in need to your table as well.

Jesus did some of his best teaching from the din-

ner table. You can too, just by passing the pota-

toes.
