Isaiah tells us that “the Lord GOD opens my ear that I may hear.” As we open our hearts to hear God’s word today, let us be prepared to fashion an answer to the question posed by Jesus to his disciples: “Who do people say that I am?” Each of us has experienced the presence of the Lord Jesus in our lives. PASTOR’S CORNER I enjoyed our liturgies and meeting so many people at our parish gatherings this past weekend. It will be great to minister with you and get to know you. We are blessed in so many ways with opportunities to see the face of God in one another and to offer the presence of Christ the Teacher and Christ the Servant in our daily lives as we go about the work that God calls us to do as disciples of Christ.

The words “be open” from last Sunday’s Gospel are a great reminder of how we receive grace and are strengthened through the power of the Holy Spirit to continue our journey on the path that God most wants us to follow.

Fr. Ed Stafford

CARILLON MEMORIALS Please contact the Parish Office to schedule your Carillon Memorials.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION It seems obvious to us that Jesus Christ is the Lord of second chances. We need look no further than Peter’s denial and rehabilitation for proof. Yet early Christians were more tentative with the gift of forgiveness. For them, every Sunday was an experience of the Lord’s power to heal and forgive, yet there were three sins that placed persons at the margins of the community’s life. In some places, the rift caused by these sins was permanent. The sins were apostasy (denial of the faith), adultery, and murder. They were particularly detested because of their power to divide and even scatter the community gathered around the Lord’s table. Fragile and persecuted communities could crumble and disappear under the weight of a harm done by a public sinner. Sinners were excluded from the community in the hope that “tough love” would help them come to their senses and experience deeper conversion. Inevitably, lists of grave sins grew longer as various bishops added their personal pet peeves to the roster, and more people were required to do public penance. For them, reconciliation was a once‑in‑a‑lifetime experience. Many sinners accepted their condition and hoped for a chance at a deathbed reconciliation by anointing. With more and more people permanently on the outs, the church began to struggle toward the light of the Lord’s unfailing gift of reconciliation.

The World Meeting of Families will take place at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia from Tuesday-Friday, September 22-25, 2015. Saint John Paul II, hailed as the Pope of the Family, created the World Meeting of Families in 1994 in Rome to explore the critical role the family plays in society and to give families opportunities to talk about the challenges and blessings that all families have.

Our theme, “Love Is Our Mission: The Family Fully Alive” was inspired by the early Church Father, St. Irenaeus, who wrote “the Glory of God is man fully alive.” The glory of men and women is their capacity to love as God loves – and no better means exists to teach the meaning of love than the family. His Holiness, Pope Francis also inspired the theme. He embodies the message of mercy, joy and love at the heart of the Gospel. For more info. on the World Meeting of Families and how to download an app to follow the activities, see www.worldmeeting2015.org.

Catechesis means “to echo.” Believers who embrace the Gospel of Jesus Christ as the best news ever proclaimed are eager to “echo” the Good News everywhere. Have you shared your enthusiasm for the Catholic Church with someone recently?

ATTENTION LITURGICAL MINISTERS Schedules for the October, November, and December are now being prepared. If you need any MAJOR change in your scheduling as Lector, Server or Eucharistic Minister, please contact the Parish Office (330-274-2253 or [email protected]) by Monday, September 14.

ARE YOU REGISTERED? St. Joseph warmly welcomes new parishioners and seasonal visitors. Please let us know how we can serve you. We invite you to participate in our activities, become involved in our Parish Ministries, and encourage you to register as soon as possible. If you have not “formally” registered with the Parish Office, please take a moment to introduce yourself. Simply drop a welcome envelope in the collection basket, contact us by phone (330-274-2253) or e-mail ([email protected]), or stop by the Parish Office during business hours. A registration packet will be prepared for you to pick up at the Mass you attend. Newly registering parishioners should return the blue form included in their packet as soon as possible. We look forward to meeting you!

If you do not receive contribution envelopes or church information mailings, then you may not be a current registered member. You may have registered your children for PSR classes, but your family may not be registered at the church because these are separate registrations. If you’re a young adult (especially if you’re out of school and working), you should register as an adult. Newly married couples who continue to attend Mass at St. Joseph’s should register as a “new family.” Also, if you move, change your phone number, would like to add your e-mail address to our records, or have any other family changes, please let us know. We would like everyone at St. Joseph’s to feel welcome as a part of our parish community family. Your assistance in keeping our records up-to-date helps to ensure that no one becomes “just a member. ” Thank you.

We welcome to the following families who have registered within the last several months:

Ron & Kelly Prijatel, Alana & Natalie Raymond & Louise Kaluba Abe & Jessica Szoka, Isaac & Izabel Lou Lanese John & Michelle Brogan, Katelyn & Madelyn Jamie Speakman Aaron & Jessica Norton, Maycee Jason & Debbie Kline, Jacey, Griffin & Daphne Matthew & Korie Varkala, Charlotte Rachel Skocic & David Grabowski

DOMINICAN FOR LIFE The Province of St. Albert the Great, Order of Preachers, joyfully announces the Solemn Profession of Joe Trout, James Peter Trares, Samuel Hakeem, Raphael Christianson, and Vincent Davila on Saturday, September 5 (pictured left to right below). They were received by Very Reverend James Marchionda, O.P., Prior Provincial, in St. Louis, MO. The Mass setting (music) for the profession liturgy was written by Br. James Peter. May God continue to bless them and their ministries.

When a Dominican Friar professes his vows he promises obedience to God, to blessed Mary, to blessed Dominic, and to the Master of the Order of Friars Preachers and his successors until death. Despite only vocally expressing the vow of obedience in their rite of profession, Dominicans follow the three evangelical counsels of obedience, chastity, and poverty. Agreeing to be obedient to their superiors; to be celibately chaste so that they may give themselves as complete gifts to all they encounter; and to be poor, living simply and sharing all their goods and materials in common. For more information on the Dominican Central Province, please visit http://opcentral.org or follow them on Facebook.
