Life is filled with them. Decisions are presented in the first reading and Gospel proclaimed today. The Israelites are asked to choose whether or not they will continue to serve the Lord, the God of Israel. In voicing their choice to continue serving the Lord, they call to mind all the wonderful things that God had done for them. The disciples in today’s Gospel reading are also faced with a choice. Many choose to turn away from Jesus because his invitation to eat his body and drink his blood is too hard a saying. Peter and the Twelve, when asked if they, too, would abandon Jesus respond, “Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.” We, in a way, repeat these words every time we come to Mass, for in fact there is nowhere else we can go to be fed by the body and blood of the Lord and hear words that will bring us eternal life. Remembering all the wonderful things that God has done for us, we choose to come to Mass to give thanks and praise to God. From Saint Margaret Sunday Missal, © J. S. Paluch Co. PASTORAL STAFF Rev. PASTOR’S CORNER “I pledge allegiance to the flag…” We all recognize these words as “the Pledge” which we learned when we were very young. Today’s readings pose this question to different audiences. Joshua asks the Chosen People which G (g) od they will serve. They respond the God of their ancestors who did such great things for them. At the conclusion of the sixth chapter of St. John’s Gospel, when many have deserted Our Lord, He asks the apostles, “Will you too leave?” We know St. Peter’s bold reply. And even today we align ourselves with our fathers and mothers in faith. But there are challenges today. What priority do we give the teachings of our faith in the everyday life? Do we remain quiet on an issue which goes against our faith formation? We pray in today’s Eucharist, where Jesus is truly present, for the courage and wisdom to be authentic witnesses of the Gospel truth and the person of Jesus to others. We pray also we the gift of compassion for those who are powerless and suffer because of world events. God bless you all this week!

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The ministry of permanent deacons has become an essential part of our parish life today, yet for centuries until 1967, this deeply traditional ministry had virtually disappeared. Every priest had first to be ordained a deacon, but the notion that one could actually embrace a permanent vocation to the diaconate was lost. The primary ministry of the deacon is to the welfare of the community, especially its poor, and his role in sacraments and preaching flows from that. His principal role is to animate and promote the ministry of all the faithful. Ninety percent of permanent deacons are married, although the discipline of celibacy for clerics means that if a deacon is widowed, normally he cannot remarry, nor can an unmarried deacon marry once ordained. The deacon does not preside at Mass nor may he absolve sins. Nor, since anointing of the sick is linked theologically to penance, may he anoint. Sometimes we are slow to engage with a tradition: Trent approved permanent deacons in the 1560s, but nothing was done until the 1960s. The vitality of the long‑delayed restoration has greatly enriched the Church, particularly in the United States, where the majority of the deacons in the world serve.

All Are Welcome!

ARE YOU GRIEVING A LOSS? If you have lost a loved one, recently or not so recently, you may be experiencing the pain of grief. Grief is not a feeling for which we are often prepared. We recognize grief truly only when it actually visits us personally. “Getting over” grief is

not easy. There is no timetable for a respectable period of grieving called “normal.” Some people find help in their grief by not going it alone.

During October, St. Joseph will resume it’s bereavement program, Seasons of Hope. This is a non-threatening way to further healing the pain of loss “with the help of my Catholic faith.” Seasons of Hope is a group process. If you are interested in joining the group or would like to ask questions about it, please contact Sr. Joyce at the Parish Office (330-274-2253 or [email protected]).
