BECAUSE WE CARE Don’t forget! If you or a parishioner you know needs help with meals, we have a ministry to pro-vide help. Volunteers prepare one hot meal and either deliver it or we will make arrangements to have it delivered. This is not a substitute for Meals on Wheels, but is designed to be a short term assistance to our parishioners. For infor-mation or to request help, please call Barbara La-place at 725-4898.

BISHOP VASA’S STATEMENT ON THE SUPREME COURT DECISION REGARDING MARRIAGE

The Press Democrat in Santa Rosa published the following statement from Bishop Vasa regarding the recent Suprement Court decision regarding marriage. “Years ago, in the Dred Scott decision, the US Supreme Court ruled that blacks were not persons. This was despite the fact that each justice presumably believed all of mankind is created in God’s image (cf. Genesis 1:26). Similarly, today’s Justices have erred with the Obergefell case just like their predecessors did with Dred Scott, by making an egre-gious error in moral judgment. While five Justices may have changed marriage’s legal definition, they can never change its moral definition. As such the true definition, the moral defini-tion of marriage as a union between one man and one wom-an—that is ordered not only toward the couple but the procrea-tion and education of children—remains unchanged. Just as Roe v. Wade did not settle the abortion question nearly two generations ago, Obergefell v. Hodges does not settle the mar-riage question today.”

CHRIST'S PRESENCE IN THE WORLD There's a bit of a "missing link" in the first two sentences of today's Gospel from Mark. In the first, the apostles return from having been sent out on mission two by two ("one who is sent" is the meaning of "apostle"). Their instructions were to preach repentance, drive out demons, and heal the sick in Jesus' name. In the second sentence, Jesus tells them to come away with him and rest a while. It would be nice for us to imagine that, be-tween those two sentences, a look of amazed grat-itude and pleasure crossed the face of Jesus as he hears of the kingdom proclaimed in his name, and how they didn't have to shake the dust off their feet anywhere. They deserved a rest! It might not be bad for us, when we gather together with Jesus as the apostles do today, to do this kind of debrief-ing, allowing the Lord to hear what we've sought to do in his name, our successes, our failures, our need to get away with him for a while to be forti-fied for further work in God's name. For we, the baptized, are not only the flock of Jesus Christ; through water and the power of the Spirit we have also become the Body of Christ, the presence of the Shepherd for the life of the world. UPDATE ON ST. BERNARD’S CATHOLIC SCHOOL

St. Bernard’s Catholic School, now St. Bernard’s Acade-my, has undergone some recent changes within its com-munity. In an effort to continue promoting superior edu-cational opportunities in Humboldt County, the school has switched its educational focus from elementary, Jr. High and high school students to strictly Jr. High and High school students (grades 7-12). The school, which was es-tablished in 1912 by the Sisters of St. Joseph, has been a strong presence in the community throughout the years, and even though populations and community dynamics are changing, St Bernard’s is keeping their legacy alive. The tradition of the school and its religious teachings will con-tinue and the reputation of spirituality will be upheld throughout this transition, and St. Bernard’s will now also be lowering their tuition in order to provide the same high-quality education to a wider area. In order to deliver this promise, the school has introduced a new five-year plan, which focuses on:

Having small, intimate class sizes Consolidating the school to upper division students Rebranding the school with its new name: St. Ber-

nard’s Academy Increased training for faculty Enhanced measurement tools for overall school suc-

cess Continuation in maintaining the school’s reputation

for excellence in athletics Nurturing their religious qualities Lowered tuition—now $3,950 and $4,950 down from

$4,200 and $6,300 for Jr. High and high school, respectively

Planning a transportation program that would allow families outside the immediate area to attend

Partnering with College of the Redwoods to offer col-lege credit courses to students at St. Bernard’s

The recent changes to St. Bernard’s have been well re-ceived by the faculty, the students and parents, as well as the communityWith all of the backing of both the faculty and community, and with the promise of great things to come, St. Bernard’s looks forward to the next hundred years.
