Many of the new immigrants are Catholics. Probably more than 80 percent of Hispanic immigrants were raised in the Catholic faith. By some estimates, Hispanic Catholics—including the United States' large Puerto Rican and Mexican American populations4—could make up the majority of U.S. Catholics within the next twenty years. But other immigrant populations also include large numbers of Catholics. Filipinos, who represent almost 5 percent of the immigrant population, are overwhelmingly Catholic. Some 350,000 of the 1.4 million Vietnamese immi-grants in this country are Catholic. These Catholics are joined by thousands of Eastern Catholics coming from the former Soviet Union, the Middle East, and India. A smaller but still significant number of the Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Laotian, Sri Lankan, Indonesian, Tongan, Samoan, and Asian Indian immigrants are also Catholic. Among the increasing numbers of immigrants from Africa, many are Catholics, raised in the vibrant Catholic cul-ture of the Church's fastest growing region.

Throughout the country, the liturgy and church decor increasingly reflect the cultural gifts of the new immigrants, with their own images of Mary and the saints, their songs, and their distinctive celebrations taking their place alongside those of older generations of immigrants. And immigrant communities provide a growing percentage of the vocations to the priesthood and religious life as well as lay leadership at the service of the Church in the United States today. The profile provided regarding the new immigrants who are Catholic should not minimize the Church's overwhelming concern for all new arrivals, regardless of their religious tradition or lack of one. Copied with permission from www.usccb.org “The Calling of the Church: A Tradition of Welcome and Pastoral Concern” will continue next week.

Stewardship Thought for the Week Today’s Scripture passages focus on the old and new covenants. In Exodus, Moses and the ancient Israelites agree to a covenant with God through the blood of sacrificial animals. This sacrifice foreshadows Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross for our sins. St. Paul contrasts Old Testament sacrifices with the new covenant sealed in the Blood of Christ. In St. Mark’s Gospel, the Evangelist describes Jesus’ institution of the Eucharist at the Last Supper, which formed the new covenant with His disciples — a covenant that still exists today. As faithful stewards, we acknowledge Christ’s true presence in His consecrated Body and Blood: the Eucharist. By regular partaking of this tre-mendous gift, we find strength to live virtuous and holy lives. Out of gratitude, we deepen our love for God and our neighbor in need.
