Scripture Study

For nearly 2000 years, Christians have followed the life and teachings of Je-sus of Nazareth, called the Messiah or Christ in the New Testament. But in the 18th century, some began to question whether the Jesus of history and the Christ of faith were indeed one and the same, or something radically differ-ent. This has led to an explosion of scholarly activity undertaking what has come to be known as the “Quest for the Historical Jesus.” In looking at the Historical Jesus we will explore at such questions as: Why can’t we read the gospels as simple presentations of fact? What other re-sources do we have that we can give us insight into Jesus? What can history

actually tell us—and what can’t it tell us—about our past?

After exploring the Historical Jesus we will look at the Jesus of Scripture. Numerous images of Jesus have been popular over the centuries, from majestic mosaics to spiritual statues. None, however, is as powerful as the New Testament. We will explore the most authentic source for our understanding of Jesus: the four gospels. As we encounter the Jesus of the Scriptures, we will come to understand the nature and history of the Gospels, as well as the fundamental dimensions of Jesus’ mission as portrayed by the evangelists. Encounter the life-giving Jesus, alive in the Church and in the world today.

At each meeting we will view two 25 minute presentations. Handouts will be available, which contain a sum-mary of the presentations and questions for discussion. If you are interested please contact Deacon Phil at 630 651-9190. We will meet on Thursday evenings at 7pm beginning October 8th in the St Francis room in the Parish Center

T his week our classes will be praying the Rosary togeth-er in church. We would en-courage all our students to

bring their rosaries if they have them otherwise we have rosaries that they can use. We invite all parents and parishioners to join us this Wednesday, October 7 at 7:30 and Saturday October 10 at 3:15 in the church.

This afternoon is the first of four integrated seminars with our Confirmation I & II candidates. We will meet from 4p.m. to 7p.m. This Friday night our Confirmation I & II candidates will be Sleeping Under the Stars. They should bring a card-board shelter (no tents) to sleep in overnight and dress appropriately. We will have a simple meal, prayer, discussion and reflection on the homeless in our country. On Saturday morning we will clean up, reflect on the event pray and dismiss by 8a.m. NO CELL PHONES. We welcome your prayers for our Confirmation candi-dates.

NO CELULA-RES.

Partners on the Journey

As many of you know, a satisfying marriage has huge benefits for your overall health and happi-ness, for the security of your children and the wel-fare of the community.

Like anything of real value, a successful marriage re-quires a conscious commit-ment to give the relation-ship the time, interest and effort it needs to remain strong. Part of that effort is

taking the time to learn new insights and skills that have been proven to make marriages last. This “Partners on the Journey” enrichment series is intended to offer you these insights and skills. If you are newly married or married fifty years, you can been benefit from this program.

This program attempts to combine a Catholic Christian un-derstanding of marriage with practical knowledge gained in the research in the social sciences. It is meant to both in-spire and equip couples to form more stable and satisfying relationships. It is designed to nourish couples spiritually, intellectually and emotionally. Each meeting will begin with an opening prayer, a warm up question related to the theme of the session, a video presen-tation, followed by an exercise to integrate the content of the presentation, a suggestion for homework, and a closing prayer.

Each participant will have a booklet, which contains session materials and each couple will receive a copy of John Gott-man’s The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work.

Our first meeting will be on Friday October 9th at 7 pm in the St Francis room of the Parish center. This would be a great “Date Night”, one that can enhance your marriage and make it thrive. Please call Deacon Phil at 630 651-9190 if you plan to attend.

Called to Serve – Altar Servers We would like to invite children and adults to become Altar Server at St. Joseph parish. St. Joseph parish has been fortunate because of many parishioners, like you, who are will-ing to share their time, talents and treasure. We are in need of your help at all the masses. Parents are encouraged to join their children in this ministry. It will take time and your commitment. However, it will be a beautiful way for you and your children to be involved at mass and in the Church. Please consider my invitation and share it with your children. In case you have any ques-tions, please do not hesitate to con-tact me. Ines Resendiz 630-303-0098 [email protected]. May the Lord continue to bless you and your family!

This year the theme of the devo-tional is Divine Mercy. Three 8th grade students, Monserrat Gonzalez, Mya Rivera, and Cory Woodrich represented Holy Family Catholic School. Every one was also blessed to have Father Luis Gutierrez present at the workshop. Father Belmon-te and Father Luis uplifted

all in at-tendance by leading us in prayer. These stu-dents are currently preparing for their

Most people take things like underwear for granted. At Catholic Chari-ties, we have found that low-income families and seniors living on poverty-level incomes do not spend money on underwear and they desperately need it. Catholic Charities is proud to announce that the 13th Annual Un-dy Sunday will be held October 10 & 11. We are asking parishes to collect under garments of all kinds. DuPage county especially needs adult diapers, men and boys underwear and baby diapers size 2&3. More than 50 parishes participate annually. They collected thousands of pairs of underwear and socks which were distributed to low-income children, families and seniors through our various locations throughout the Diocese of Joliet. This year we are hoping for even more partici-pation!

Gracias

Stewardship Thought for the Week In the context of the passage from the Letter to the Hebrews that all things exist for and through God, today’s Scripture passages from the Book of Genesis and St. Mark’s Gospel profess a common theme: sacred marriage. In the Gospel, Jesus, referring to Genesis, proclaims, God made them male and female. For this reason, a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. It is obvious from these Scripture pas-sages that God’s gift of marriage is a blessing between one man and one woman. This is the Church’s teaching on Christian marriage and it is this Scriptural Truth that faithful stewards need to embrace regardless of what secular society promotes as a false image of marriage. In this Truth, the Sacrament of Matrimony reaches its full Christian meaning and potential by strengthening husbands and wives to love and serve the Lord and one another.
