In the case of our discovering that someone who was at a Mass and has tested positive for COVID-19, we want to be able to inform all of you particularly if you had been at the same Mass, so that, in consultation with your physician, you can take the appropriate steps. If we learn of a person who has been at Mass and has tested positive, we will send out a parish-wide email with the details. Also, it will be on the parish website as well, so please check our website, brightoncatholic.org on a regular basis. This past weekend of Masses since the reopening went very well. We are also grateful for the prayerful and financial support of parishioners who have not yet been able to attend Mass. As we move into the next phases of reopening, you will be informed of any changes to our procedures. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

15th Sunday in Ordinary Time Under the huge oak tree in the yard, my 5-year-old niece was shocked to discover that the huge tree had begun as a small acorn, just like one of many she found on the ground. She could not believe that something so large began as something so small. Crowds of people wanted to hear what Jesus had to say. When He taught, Jesus used parables to explain spiritual realities that are difficult to grasp. But their everyday experiences provided vivid images to explain things they could not see. Seed needs good soil to grow; so does the Word of God need good soil—us—for it to grow. People will often express a desire to have greater faith or trust in God. Somehow more is better and even necessary for it to ‘work.’ Looking for ways to find more faith, people will overlook the fact that what they have is enough. Prayer, practice and patience will allow the seeds of faith to grow, becoming stronger and deeper each day. Then, one day we can say with Paul, that I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.

St. Columbkille Parish Brighton, MA

July 12, 2020 5

Dear Friends and Parishioners, I greet you with the hope and prayer that you are well and safe during these times. Since our reopening of Mass, we have now experienced 4 Sundays under the restricted measures we have had to follow. For the greater part, all has gone smoothly thanks to the help of numerous volunteers serving to direct parishioners who have returned. We are still in need of more volunteers, so if you can, please contact our Transitional Deacon, Matthew Norwood, at [email protected] and he will contact you.

Since opening on Pentecost weekend, the number of parishioners attending Mass each weekend has been 278, 322, 370, and 349 respectively. While we are significantly below our usual weekend attendance, our numbers are good as compared to other parishes. Interestingly enough, our daily Mass at 7:00 am has shown a significant increase in attendance. As time goes on, and hopefully, things get better in our area relative to the pandemic, we hope others may feel comfortable returning to Mass. In the meantime however, caution is recommended for vulnerable persons relative to age and health. Sunday Mass at 10:00 am and 12:000 pm (Spanish) can still be viewed live on Youtube by going to our parish website brightoncatholic.org and clicking on the Youtube button. Each week, our parish bulletin may be found also at our website. As part of the Archdiocesan guidelines, priests, deacons and Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are still prohibited from making Communion calls to homes and nursing homes except for emergency situations in which strict precautions must be followed. Additionally, funeral Masses, weddings and baptisms may be celebrated in the church following strict social distancing and limited capacity guidelines of the Archdiocese. If these or any other guidelines change in the future, we will let you know.

Some people have wondered about any guidelines we may have relative to learning that someone who has attended Mass has come down with the virus. As read at all Masses last weekend and as noted in the parish bulletin. If we learn of a person who has been at Mass and has tested positive, we will send out a parish-wide email with the details. Also, it will be on the parish website as well, so please check our website, brightoncatholic.org on a regular basis. If you wish to be contacted personally, please call or email the rectory ([email protected]) with the appropriate contact information so that you can receive a personal notification.

We pray for our city, state, and nation during these volatile times. We pray that constructive dialogue may win the day as we focus on solving problems following the teachings of the Prince of Peace, Jesus Christ who proclaims the dignity of every human being. Finally, as we move next week into the beginning of July, along with Father Chris Bae, Deacon Matt Norwood and the other priests in residence at the rectory, I wish you a healthy and restful summer and a Happy Fourth of July!. May God bless you and your loved ones. Fr. Richard Fitz

Fi eenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

P. Richard Fitz Email sent June 27, 2020
