WHAT DID THE LOUD VOICE SAY?Then I, John, saw a new heaven and a new earth. The former heaven and the former earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. I also saw the holy city, a new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, God’s dwelling is with the human race. He will dwell with them and they will be his people and God himself will always be with them as their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there shall be no more death or mourning, wailing or pain, for the old order has passed away.” The One who sat on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.”

FEASTS CELEBRATED THIS WEEKMay 19 – Fifth Sunday of Easter

Gospel Reading: John 13:31-33a,34-35Jesus gives his disciples a new commandment: love one another. Background on the Gospel Reading: John’s Gospel does not include an institution of the Eucharist narrative; instead, Jesus washes his disciples’ feet. Immediately after, Jesus predicts his betrayal by Judas. Today’s Gospel follows that prediction. It can be read as a continuing explanation of Jesus’ act of washing his disciples’ feet. It begins with the announcement that this is the moment when the Son of Man will be glorified. This theme continues throughout John’s Passion. Jesus will be glorified in his death on the cross and in his Resurrection, and the disciples will glorify Jesus in the love they show.John’s Gospel does not present a sentimental view of love. This is a type of love that is shown in service and sacrifice. It is difficult to choose to love when faced with hatred and anger. Jesus tells the disciples that all will know that they are his disciples because of the love they show for one another. This description of the early Christian community will be repeated in the Acts of the Apostles: “See how they love one another.” Christian love is the hallmark of Christianity. We see it lived in the witness of the martyrs. We see it in the example of the lives of the saints. We see it in the holy women and men who live and love daily, making small and large sacrifices for others.

May 20 – St. Bernadine of Siena, Priest

Born in 1380, St. Bernardine of Siena left the world at an early age in order to lead a hermit’s life. When he was twenty-two, he entered the Franciscan Order, one of whose glories he is. Having been made General of the Order, he resigned this charge in order to devote himself to preaching. He preached the name of Jesus with such love that it wrought the transformation of many souls. He was instrumental in effecting many conversions.

May 21 – St. Christopher Magallanes, Priest & Companions, Martyrs

Saint Christopher Magallanes was joined in martyrdom by twenty-one diocesan priests and three devout laymen, all members of the Cristeros movement, who rose up in rebellion against the anti-Catholic Mexican government during the 1920s. Having erected a seminary at Totatiche, he secretly spread the Gospel and ministered to the people. Captured by government authorities, he was heard to shout from his jail cell: “I am innocent, and I die innocent. I forgive with all my heart those responsible for my death, and I ask God that the shedding of my blood serve the peace of our divided Mexico.”

May 22 – St. Rita of Cascia, Religious

After eighteen years of married life, St. Rita lost, by death, her husband and her two sons. Called afterwards to the religious state, she professed the Rule of St. Augustine at Cascia her native town, in central Italy. In a life-long and terrible malady her patience, cheerfulness, and union by prayer with almighty God, never failed her. Jesus imprinted on her brow the mark of a thorn from His crown. She died May 22, 1456, and both in life and after death

has worked many miracles.Sources: loyolapress.com/our-catholic-faith/liturgical-year/sunday-connection/fifth-sunday-of-easter-cycle-c-sunday-connection

PRO-LIFE ANSWERS TO FALSE PRO-CHOICE ARGUMENTS (PART III)“Every child a wanted child”.Prior to the legalization of abortion over 46 years ago, advocates for abortion held out the panacea of the elimination of “unwanted children” if only abortion was legal. In fact, it was Planned Parenthood which led this charge, coining the familiar slogan, “Every child a wanted child.” Even though some 60 million “unwanted” babies have died in the intervening period, the pro-choice lobby still uses this argument to justify abortion. In the 1960’s and 70’s the pro-choice position was that legalizing abortion would drastically reduce child abuse. America legalized abortion and during the next 46 plus years, child abuse has skyrocketed. Yet, despite this staggering increase in child abuse, the pro-choice lobby continues to tie itself in knots by now arguing that making abortion illegal would cause an increase in child abuse!!! How many more millions of children do we have to kill before their scheme starts to work?We all agree that every child should be wanted. This is an idealistic goal, but sadly we do not live in an idyllic world. Wouldn’t it also be a wonderful world if there were no unwanted wives, no aging unwanted parents, no unwanted Jews, blacks or Catholics or anyone else who is devalued or persecuted? Moreover, since when does anyone’s right to live depend upon someone else wanting them? Women rightfully resent that the value of a woman is sometimes determined by whether a man wants her. How can anyone possibly insist that the value of an unborn baby is to be determined by whether a mother wants him or her at any given time? To use being wanted by someone as a measure of whether a human life can live is a truly frightening concept. Its converse logically awaits us – that the unwanted can be eliminated. Don’t forget that Hitler’s Germany was ideal for wanted Aryans. To make sense, the slogan: “Every child a wanted child” has to be completed “and if not wanted, aborted.” To complete the sentence removes the mask from this misleading slogan and reveals it for the evil that it is!

WORD OF LIFEFor those struggling with infertility: May their hearts rest in the Good Shepherd, whose faithfulness endures to all generations. We pray to the Lord.

“If you have trouble bringing a child into your family, know that you are not alone. God is with you, and his Church desires to walk with you… God has a beautiful plan for your life as a married couple. Seek his guidance, and let the healing power of prayer, a conversation in which ‘heart speaks unto heart,’ strengthen you.”
