St. Vincent de Paul Society Members of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (or "Vincentians" ) are men and

women who strive to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person service to those

in our local community. Vincentians wish to be the Face of Christ. To this end, our

SVdP Society operates a thrift shop offering clothing, house-wares and religious

items for sale as well as a modicum of financial assistance and a list of resources of

other helping agencies. If you feel the call to serve in this corporal work or to

make a donation of your household items or financial resources, please call

388-4544.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus says: “This is how it is with the reign of God. A man scatters

seed on the ground. He goes to bed and gets up day after day. Through it all the

seed sprouts and grows without his knowing how it happens.”

Through your almsgiving you are sowing seeds that grow far greater than you

know. So it is with your gift placed in the St. Vincent de Paul poor box.

From the Office of

Liturgy and Music

Mediator Dei was a papal encyclical

issued by Pope Pius XII on 20 Novem-

ber 1947. It was the first encyclical in

recent centuries devoted entirely to

liturgy. It was the first real official doc-

ument of the “modern” liturgical

movement that suggested active

participation for the lay faithful in the

liturgy, in liturgical ceremonies and in

the life of their parish. The encyclical

also emphasized the importance of

the Eucharist. Mediator Dei is one of

the more important encyclicals of

Pope Pius XII. The encyclical con-

demned certain excesses of liturgical

reform and stressed the importance

of the union of the sacrifice of the

altar with communion. All of these

ideas greatly directed the reforms

undertaken during and after Vatican

II. Its name is taken from its opening

line: “Mediator between God and

men and High Priest who has gone

before us into heaven, Jesus the Son

of God quite clearly had one aim in

view when He undertook the mission

of mercy which was to endow man-

kind with the rich blessings of super-

natural grace.” Right from the begin-

ning, the Pope affirms the great mys-

tery of the Epiphany, that God re-

vealed himself on earth for the sole

purpose of redeeming all mankind

and that the locus for this divine en-

counter today is within the celebra-

tion of the sacred liturgy.
