  • THE CATHEDRAL PARISH AND CATHEDRAL BASILICA OF SAINT AUGUSTINE ST. AUGUSTINE, FLORIDA THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD JANUARY 8, 2017

Mission Statement of the Cathedral Parish St. Augustine, Florida

We are Christ’s eyes, ears, mouth, hands, and feet -

sent out to do justice, especially for the poor and oppressed,

to minister to the needs of the community, to be faithful stewards of God’s creation -

awakening faith among the hopeless, and promoting life even within the culture

    of death.

The adoration of the magi, Edward burne-jones (1833-1898)

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK Today the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the

Epiphany of the Lord. The word epiphany means “manifestation.” What we celebrate is that Sacred Mys-tery of the Son of God taking on our humanity and mani-festing Himself to our world. Originally, the Christian Church recalled three events on this day – the visit of the Magi, Jesus’ Baptism at the Jordan River and His first mir-acle at the Wedding at Cana. While the Roman (Western) Church has separated these remembrances, the Eastern Churches still maintain the ancient origins of today’s fes-tival.

One thing to do, though, is to look over the next sev-eral Sundays at how the Gospel is a “manifestation” of Jesus as L. Even though the Feast of the Baptism of the L will be celebrated Monday (tomorrow), next Sunday the passage from the Gospel of Saint John will have us present at Jesus’ Baptism by John the Baptist and John’s great witness statement: “Behold, the Lamb of God…!” After that Jesus will manifest Himself as He calls His first disciples along the Sea of Galilee and then He will show Himself as the Great Teacher in the Sermon on the Mount from the Gospel of Saint Matthew.

Lent will not begin until March 1 this year, so we have a good length of time – eight Sundays – to hear pro-claimed in our liturgical assemblies the marvels of Em-manuel, “God-with-us!” With our Orthodox brothers and sisters we can pray today:

On this day You have appeared to the whole world; and Your Light, O L, is signed on us

who sing and chant your praises. You have come now and appeared unto us,

    O Light unapproachable.

    Love, Father Tom

Please note that Fr. Tom, Fr. Lawrence, John Garofalo and Bernie Sans will be away this week attending the

bi-annual Cathedral Ministry Conference. Please pray for us, especially our safe travel; know you will be in our

    prayers, too.

The deadline for submissions to the Cathedral bulletin is

noon on Monday, six days prior to bulletin distribution.

    Bulletin editor: [email protected]

Are you interested in becoming an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion?

Ordinary Ministers (priests and deacons) are normal ministers of Holy Communion. Lay people are commissioned to assist the priests and deacons of the parish as needed after proper training. We are offering classes in January for those wishing to become Ex-traordinary Ministers of Holy Communion in Cathedral Parish. Please make note of the following dates: Session 1 Theology of the Eucharist - January 24 from 6-8:30 p.m. or January 28 from 9-11:30 a.m. at St. Benedict the Moor Church. Session 2 Theology of the Eucharist - January 26 from 6-8:30 p.m. or January 28 from 12:30-3 p.m. at St. Benedict the Moor Church. Practicum Training - February 4 from 9-10:30 at the Cathedral.

To become an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion you must attend one of the Session 1 classes and one of the Session 2 classes plus the Practicum Training.

Save the dates so that you may join us in this ministry in the Cathedral Parish. You will be commissioned after you com-plete these classes. If you would like to serve in the Hospital, Nurs-ing Home or Homebound Ministries you must complete these clas-ses and then receive additional training related particularly to these ministries.

From your Bulletin Editor I have been meaning for some time to ask if you think there are ways that the bulletin content could be improved. What would you like to see in the bulletin? My own particular wish is that more ministry news could be printed on a regular basis. Of course I always include notices of ministry meetings, but I would like to add a bit more depth … What’s your latest project? Did you enjoy a lively discussion at your last meeting; did you make a discovery that shed new light on your Catholic faith? How is your ministry living out our Parish Mission Statement? Your thoughts and suggestions are welcomed, and may be sent to me at [email protected]. - Shannon McKay

Stewardship reflection for the Epiphany of the Lord Today the Church celebrates the Solem-nity of the Epiphany. The word “epiphany” comes from the Greek epiphainen, a verb that means “to shine upon,” “to manifest,” or “to make known.” What the Church celebrates today is the manifestation of our Lord Jesus Christ to

the whole world; after being made known to the shepherds of Beth-lehem, He is revealed to the Magi who have come from the East to adore Him.

The Epiphany should be and is a great Feast for us. The joy we felt at the birth of Christ on Christmas must be renewed today (and every day for that matter). In a sense this is a second Christmas Day as it puts the Lord in a new light. This day manifests the divinity of Jesus. At Christmas it was a few shepherds who were invited by the Angels to go and witness and recognize the Lord.

However, today, at the Epiphany, the voice of God calls the whole world, each and every one of us, to adore Jesus, and to hear Him. The Epiphany or the realization of the divinity and saving grace of the Lord should lead us as individuals to a personal epipha-ny. In a sense an epiphany is representative of conversion, conver-sion to the truth.

If we accept Christ as our Savior and if we truly strive to live our lives as His disciples, we begin to pursue lives of stewardship, lives of love and service. Today of all days should help us in that realiza-tion and in that goal.

CATHEDRAL PARISH SCHOOLS’ 32nd ANNUAL FESTIVAL

SILENT AUCTION Cathedral Parish Early Education Center is proud to an-

nounce that we will host the Silent Auction at the 32nd Annual Cathedral Parish School Festival on Sunday, February 26, 2017.

The Cathedral Festival helps raise funds to assist Cathedral Parish School and Cathedral Parish Early Education Center. This Festival is the major fundraiser for our schools and its success is vital to ensure that we are able to offer a Catholic, faith-based education to our community.

Last year, thanks to the community, we raised thousands of dollars for both Cathedral Parish School and Cathedral Parish Early Education Center through the Cathedral Festival. Please consider donating an item to contribute to our Silent Auction this year.

If you have an item to donate, please call Jill or Peggy at (904) 829-2933, or e-mail [email protected] to arrange delivery.

    We appreciate your faithful support!

ACTIVE PARISHIONER STATUS We receive many requests from parishioners to qualify for wed-dings here, or to be godparents or sponsors for the Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation, and to rightfully enjoy the number of services offered at the Cathedral. Part of that request is to be able to verify that a person is an "active member" of the Cathedral Par-ish. Because of the nature of our congregation, having so many visitors, it is difficult to know everyone.

An "active member" of this parish is one who: Is properly registered and on the parish census

Faithfully attends Mass on Sundays and Holy Days

Participates in parish activities when possible

Uses the parish envelope system or contributes via Faith Direct

While assessments of an inquirer's status will be made individual-ly, the above are the main factors that will be considered in mak-ing that determination.
