The trinity, josÉ de ribera (1591-1652)

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK A couple of months after his election as Bishop of

Rome and Supreme Pontiff, Pope Francis gave an interview to a Catholic, Asian news correspondent in which he was asked to explain The Trinity. Francis responded:

The Holy Trinity is not the product of human rea-soning. It is the face with which God revealed him-self … by walking with humanity, in the history of the people of Israel, and above all in Jesus of Naza-reth. It is Jesus who has saved us. Jesus is the Son who made us know the merciful Father and brought to the world his 'fire', the Holy Spirit, who guides us, who gives us good ideas, inspirations.

As the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity this Lord’s Day, our Holy Father’s words are cer-tainly worth contemplating. The Trinity, we believe, is how God “revealed himself.” This revelation is a product of faith, i.e, how we come to know about God. Each Sunday we profess our belief in this mystery of One God and Three Persons.

Last year, Francis stated that our belief in the Trinity reminds us that “we are called to live… with one another, and in one another.” The Divine Community of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit teaches us how to live in the commu-nities of our lives.

Love, Father Tom

Mission Statement of the Cathedral Parish St. Augustine, Florida

We are Christ’s eyes, ears, mouth, hands, and feet -

sent out to do justice, especially for the poor and oppressed,

to minister to the needs of the community, to be faithful stewards of God’s creation -

awakening faith among the hopeless, and promoting life even within the culture

of death.

May 29: Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ Next Sunday (May 29) is the So-lemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ. Our annual Eucharis-tic Procession through the streets of St. Augustine will take place following the 11:00 a.m. Mass. Please make plans now to join together as a community of faith as we bring Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament of the Eucha-

rist in procession through our beloved town, expressing our faith in His Real Presence and asking His Divine Blessings upon all. Our parish’s ministries and organizations are encouraged to walk to-gether in the procession.

May 28: Everyone has a vocation… what’s yours? If you want to ask God about this question, our discernment group for young men (high school and older) is meeting Saturday, May 28 at 10:30 a.m. at the Bosco House. We will end with lunch. We meet the 4th Saturday of every month. Feel free to come and look into this question with us. For more information, please contact Fr. Law-rence at the office or email [email protected].

Summary of May’s Parish Council meeting May 10 was the last formal meeting of the Parish Council before

summer break. We wrapped up old business, including a final recap of the Day of Reflection, an update on the nomination process for new council members and the quarterly pot luck.

As we explore ways to live out our Mission Statement, the New Business segment on our agenda began with a very informative report from Father Lawrence on Alpha -- a program focused on outreach that we are considering for our parish. Also discussed was establishing a relationship with a “Sister Parish” in Haiti, Honduras, Cuba or the Dominican Republic.

A retreat for both outgoing and incoming Parish Council mem-bers is on the parish calendar for August 12-13. As over half the council has turned over, this will be a “continuity” retreat to assist in the transition. The next formal meeting of our Parish Council will be in September 2016. We hope everyone has a safe and fun-filled summer!

Cathedral Parish Youth Ministry is taking 27 teens to Camp Covecrest this year from June 13-18! This is such a blessing to be able to take so many teens from our parish for a week of fellow-ship, prayer and fun. In order to make this a possibility, CPYM will be hosting a few different fundraising efforts. See below for what we have going on!

1) WALL O’ MONEY - As we do every year in the Spring, we have placed two boards in the back of the Cathedral which will be left up through May 27. One board has pictures and descrip-tions to show where we are going and what we are doing, as well as testimonies from teens who have gone before. If you feel so inclined, please visit the boards, grab an envelope and follow the directions inside. Money raised will go towards the teens’ scholarship accounts as well as van rentals for the trip.

2) CHICK-FIL-A SPIRIT NIGHT, MAY 26 - On Thursday, May 26 from 5:30-7:30 p.m., Chick-fil-A here in St. Augustine will be hosting a Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine Spirit Night. All you have to do to support us is to come buy dinner at Chick-fil-A between 5:30 and 7:30, and we will receive a percentage of the earnings during those two hours from in store and drive-thru transactions. This is a great and fun way to raise some money to help send our teens to camp.

We thank you for your generosity and willingness to help send our teens to camp! If you have any questions, you can contact Ryan in the Youth Ministry office!

May Christ banish from the souls of all whatever might endanger peace. May Christ transform all people into

witnesses of truth, justice and love. May Christ illumine with light the minds of rulers, so that, besides caring for the proper

material welfare of their peoples, they may also guarantee them the fairest gift of peace.

Their appointments are effective June 1, 2016. (Photo by Scott Smith)

Recent First Commu-nicants are invited to attend and participate in the procession. First Communion attire is welcome but not required. Please call (904)824-2809 to confirm if a child will participate.

Year of Mercy Jubilee Mass for Priests, June 3 Bishop Felipe Estévez will gather with the priests of the diocese on Friday, June 3 at Sacred Heart Parish, 5752 Blanding Blvd. in Jacksonville, for a Mass that begins at 5:00 p.m. The homilist will be Father Michael Pendergraft, vicar for priests for the diocese and pastor of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Fleming Island. It has been a tradition in the Catholic Church for priests to consecrate their vocation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In Catholic sacramental the-ology, a priest is ordained to act in persona Christi (“in the person of Christ”). The Heart of Jesus, full of love for all people, becomes the model for priests as they minister to the people of God. At this Jubi-lee Mass, the priests will recite a prayer by which they consecrate themselves and their ministries to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The faithful are cordially invited to this celebration. For more infor-mation, call Father James Kaniparampil, CMI, pastor of Sacred Heart Parish, at (904) 771-2152 or [email protected].

Cathedral Office/Rectory visitor parking We realize that getting to the Cathedral office/rectory is becoming harder

and harder. Therefore, we have changed the location of parking spaces for those needing to visit the office/rectory during weekday office hours.

The parking spaces for those who have an appointment or need to take care of things at the office/rectory are located in the “Bank of America” lot. There are two spots reserved. Just mention to the attendant that you have to go to the office/rectory. They will direct you to the appropriate spaces. These spots are for office/rectory visitors only and are intended to be short term.

We think you will find these spots much more parishioner friendly than past office parking spots. Please call ahead if you have mobility issues and we’ll try to help with a closer spot.

Cathedral Parish Parking: TRUE OR FALSE? If I have a parish parking permit, I can leave my vehicle in the

“Bank of America lot.” PARTIALLY TRUE. Parishioners do not have to rush to their

vehicles after Mass. A limited amount of time is allowed for visiting after Mass or for coffee and donuts, etc. For the 5 p.m. Masses, vehi-cles must exit the lot by 6:45 p.m.; 7 a.m. Mass by 8:45 a.m.; 9 a.m. Mass by 10:45 a.m.; and 11 a.m. Mass by 12:45 p.m. Vehicles left in the lot after those times will be required to pay when exiting the lot.

Free Shuttle Service to the Cathedral

for Saturday & Sunday 5:00 p.m. Masses

Old Town Trolleys of St. Augustine will provide a free shuttle from the parking lot of Cathedral Parish School to the Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine each Saturday and Sunday afternoon for the 5:00 p.m. Mass.

For about 30 minutes following Mass, the shuttle will take people back to the CPS parking lot.

This service is for those attending Mass at the Cathe-dral and cannot be used for other purposes.

St. Augustine St. Vincent de Paul

needs you to join us Pope Francis has asked us all to get involved in this Jubilee Year of Mercy. He is calling us to be the Church that reaches out to those in need through our works of mercy. Are you looking for some practical, local action to take during this Jubilee Year of Mercy?

Members of the St. Augustine Society of St. Vincent de Paul invite you to join us on our journey to grow spiritually by offering help to our broth-ers and sisters in need. In the tradition of our founder, Blessed Frederick Ozanam, and our patron St. Vincent de Paul, we work with those in need, for it is in the face of those living in poverty that we especially see the face of Christ. There are a variety of ways you can help:

By visiting clients in their homes to bring support and financial assistance

By volunteering in our Thrift Store By contributing gently-used clothing, household items and furnishings

For more information and/or to volunteer, call Deborah Sabol at Client Services (904) 217-8097

Holy Communion to the Homebound Church norms permit only those who are “ordinary” ministers of the Eucharist (bishops,

priests, and deacons) and those who have been commissioned and blessed as Extraor-

dinary Ministers of Holy Communion to take the Blessed Sacrament to those who are

unable to get to Mass because of infirmity, age or disability. Anyone who takes the

Blessed Sacrament outside a church must have the express permission of the pastor of

the parish. If you or someone you know desires to receive Holy Communion and is

unable to get to Mass because of sickness, age or a disability, please contact the recto-

ry at [email protected] or (904) 824-2806.
