Solemnity of The Blessed Virgin Mary 01 January 2018

Following the 3rd Commandment, “Keep holy the Sabbath day,” the Catholic

Church’s Law states: “on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation, the faithful are

obliged to participate in the Mass.” This year, 01 January falls on Monday; While

the holyday obligation is suspended in the USA this year, we nonetheless may

celebrate the solemnity with our participation in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

From the Office of

Liturgy and Music

We are still in the midst of a wonderful

celebration of the great Christmas

season this weekend with today's

Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary

and Joseph and tomorrow’s Solemni-

ty of Mary, Mother of God. The title

"Mother of God" is an ancient one. It's

Greek form, theotokos, or "God-

bearer," is used more extensively in

the Eastern Orthodox Church. Its

loose Western translation of "Mother

of God" was defined by the Council

of Ephasus in 431 AD. While rejected

almost entirely by the Protestant

movement in the 16th century, it has

remained a fundamental belief in the

Apostolic Tradition because of the

implied understanding of the Trinity:

Jesus is God and Mary is the Mother

of Jesus. Therefore, Mary is also the

Mother of God, an expression of the

indivisible unity of the Three Persons of

God.

Peace in the new year,

Dr. Thomas Fielding,

Director of Liturgy and Music

Living out Christmas in the

New Year How do we live out the message of Christmas

in the New Year, rather than pack it away

with the ornaments? Each year the Octave

Day of Christmas falls on the first day of the

New Year, on which we also celebrate the

Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the

Mother of God. Her open heart and coura-

geous “yes” to God show us how to live year-

round—with hearts open to the Lord, following

where He leads. We are called to place our

trust in Him, to

enter compassionately into the suffering of

others, and to love one another as Christ loves

us. Like Our Blessed Mother welcomed Jesus,

we are called to cherish and protect the gift

of human life, at every stage and in every circumstance.

One way to live out the message of Christmas and follow Our Lady’s example is to

join 9 Days for Life, a digital pilgrimage of prayer and charitable action. The U.S.

Catholic bishops invite you to join thousands of Catholics nationwide from

Thursday, January 18 – Friday, January 26.

Join today at www.9daysforlife.com!
