K-12 Science Presentation for the Scotia-Glenville CSD Board of Education April 29, 2019 NGSS: The Wonder of Science Unraveling the Next Generation Science Standards 1 Why New Science Standards? SCIENCE EDUCATION NEEDED AN UPDATE New York State’s K-12 science standards were adopted in 1996. Since that time, we’ve made major advances in science and technology and gained a better understanding of how students learn these subjects. The current Grade 4 & 8 Science Exams and high school Science Regents Exams are based on the 1996 standards. The new NYS science standards are based on the national Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). These new standards place a greater emphasis on scientific process, problem solving, and the interconnectedness of scientific disciplines. 2

Why New Science Standards?SCIENCE EDUCATIONNEEDED AN UPDATE

New York State’s K-12 science standards were adopted in

1996. Since that time, we’ve made major advances in science

and technology and gained a better understanding of how

students learn these subjects.

The current Grade 4 & 8 Science Exams and high school

Science Regents Exams are based on the 1996 standards.

The new NYS science standards are based on the national

Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). These new

standards place a greater emphasis on scientific process,

problem solving, and the interconnectedness of scientific

disciplines.2

The new standards aren’t curriculum but guide the development of curriculum and assessment.

Why NGSS?

● Rooted in cognitive psychology research on how kids learn science

● Progressions: All components are organized systematically across multiple years of school

● Developed with input from field experts and the NYSSLS had input from NYS stakeholders

● Doesn’t emphasize discrete facts ● Provides students with engaging

opportunities to experience how science is actually done

The Three Dimensions of NGSSThe NGSS differ from prior science standards in that they integrate three dimensions into each performance expectation (measurable outcome of the standard).

Dimension 1: Science & Engineering Practices (aka problem solving skills)

How students learn: Activities that scientists and engineers engage in to understand the world or solve a problem.

Dimension 2: Crosscutting Concepts (aka making connections)What students look for: Ideas which are not specific to any one discipline of science but cut across them all.

Dimension 3: Disciplinary Core Ideas (aka content)What students learn: Concepts in science and engineering that have broad importance within and across disciplines as well as relevance in people’s lives.

After curriculum revision, Scotia science lessons will have evidence of a practice, crosscutting concept, and core idea. 17

Smithsonian Gr 3 Engineering Design Kit: How Can We Protect Animals When Their Habitat Changes

How Can We Protect Animals When Their Habitat Changes? is part

of Smithsonian Science for the Classroom, a brand new curriculum

series by the Smithsonian Science Education Center. It is aligned to

a group of grade 3 standards. It has a focus on engineering design,

with a secondary focus on life science. In this module, students:

● Identify the problem of animal population decline caused by habitat change

● Design a classroom habitat where roly polys can survive● Use camera trap data to explain why different animals live in

different habitats● Compare fossils to modern organisms to explain that habitats

on Earth have changed● Use a model of a tiger habitat to explain why tiger populations

have declined● Design a salamander tunnel that will reduce the deaths of

salamanders on roads
