above dates must speak with Melissa Armstrong to schedule

ADULT BIBLE STUDY – resumes Sunday, 20 August at 9:00

AM in the Parish Center. This year we will concentrate our

study on the Second Reading for the Sunday Mass. All

adults of the Parish are invited to join. Coffee and snacks are

always available.

ADULT RELIGIOUS EDUCATION SESSIONS – resume, Tuesday,

5 September, 6:25-7:45 PM. All adults (Catholic & non-

Catholic, Parishioners & non-Parishioners) are invited to join

us as we enter into PSALMS – The School of Prayer, a

continuation of The Great Adventure Bible Study. At the

heart of the Bible are the Psalms: prayers from God that help

us learn to pray. The Holy Spirit inspired them. Israel sang

them. Christ himself prayed them, as did our Blessed

Mother. These sacred hymns become our heartfelt response

to God's loving and wondrous deeds for us. Their words

capture the imagination and draw us into a deeply personal

encounter with God. PSALMS – The School of Prayer will help

you establish a deeply personal dialogue with God. Due to

lack of participation of young families last year, babysitting

will not be provided this year. I am grateful to the 70 adults

who attended these sessions last year. I hope you all come

back and bring a friend.

RCIA (RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS) – If you or someone you know is interested in learning more about the Catholic Faith, or would like assistance with discernment, without pressure, whether or not to become Catholic, please contact Deacon Clapp to schedule an appointment. If a family member or friend is interested, I encourage you to offer to volunteer to come with them to the meeting. If you are not Catholic, have been attending Mass at St Joseph’s for a number of years, and are interested in exploring areas of Faith that are keeping you from formally entering the Catholic Church, Fr Riley will gladly schedule a few non-

pressure sessions with you to see if we can resolve those concerns through a dialogue about the truths of the Catholic Faith. Many times what someone “thinks” the Catholic Church teaches and what the Catholic Church actually believes are not the same. If you are not Catholic and are attending Mass regularly or sporadically, we are happy to have you as part of our community, and we are blessed that you choose to worship God with us.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS –

Candidate Brent Kimbler will be ordained to Order of Deacon on Saturday, 16 September 2017, 10:00 AM, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 4754 Smallhouse RD Bowling Green, KY 42104.

SAINT JOSEPH PARISH SCHOLARSHIP – ALTERATION & SUSPENSION

Beginning with the graduating class of 2013, at my request, the Parish Finance Council enthusiastically supported

offering a Parish Scholarship to every graduating high school Senior who applied and met the requirements we

set forth; before this, only one student scholarship per year was given. Four out of the past five years there have

been at least one parental complaint of students who were denied the Scholarship because they did not meet all

the requirements; mostly it was due to a student missing the 1 August deadline to turn in their fall class schedules

each year of college to receive the consecutive $250/annual portion of their scholarship. Because of these yearly

complaints, some of which were polite and respectful disagreements, others of which were angry accusations

about my integrity, lack of mercy and rigidity, I have decided to rescind the Parish Scholarships in the future after

the graduating class of 2020 (we are morally bound to our part of the contracts we made with students already

in our programs).

After discussion with the Parish Pastoral and Parish Finance Councils, it has been decided that current Sophomore,

Junior and Senior students who meet the requirements (listed below under Parish Graduate Award) and who are

able to produce a letter of acceptance to an accredited college/university on or by 15 April of their senior year will

be given their scholarship money ($500 for two year technical college; $1,000 for four year college/university;

$1,300 for Catholic four year college/university) at the Mass where graduates are recognized and blessed in May.

Current college Freshmen, Sophomores and Juniors who have met the requirements thus far will receive the

remainder of their scholarship money by the end of April 2018.

The money remaining in the Scholarship Fund, held in escrow in the Diocese of Owensboro, part of which is left

over from the Saint Joseph School Endowment, once the scholarships are paid, will continue to be used to

subsidize Parish Students who attend Catholic elementary, middle and high schools (St Mary School System).

SAINT JOSEPH PARISH GRADUATE AWARD – A NEW PARISH FUND

The Parish Pastoral & Finance Councils and Parish Priest have agreed to establish the Saint Joseph Parish Graduate

Award Fund to offer a one-time award of $200 (amount suggested by Council members) beginning with current

high school Freshmen (graduating class of 2021) who meet the following requirements (basic stewardship

expectations), which will be bestowed at the Mass where graduates are recognized and blessed in May of the year

of their graduation:

! Registered/Active member of St Joseph Parish for at least four years.

! Attend weekly Mass at Saint Joseph Parish on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation, with the exception

of illness and an occasional attendance at another Parish.

! Have received Confirmation in the Catholic Church before Junior year of High School in order to be eligible

for Liturgical ministry requirement.

! All Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors must attend a minimum of 20 High School Religious

Education classes at Saint Joseph Parish each year; or turn in monthly assignments from a home school

Religious Education Program pre-approved by the Parish Priest. This requirement must be maintained for

all 4 years of High School (grades 9-12) to be eligible for the Saint Joseph Scholarship or Award.

! Juniors and Seniors: in addition to the attendance at 20 Religious Education classes per year,

o Be scheduled for and regularly carry out at least one Liturgical Ministry throughout Junior and

Senior year. Register for ministry in July before Junior year to be added to ministry schedule.

Liturgical Ministries include: Greeter, Altar Server, Reader, Extraordinary Minister of Holy

Communion, Music ministry.

o Accumulate 20 hours total of other service over the course of Junior and Senior years to the Parish

such as: Music Ministry practices, Aide at Elementary Parish Religious Education, Vacation Bible

School, and Choir at Easter & Christmas and others to be announced as opportunities arise; though

not a Parish organization, they may also use hours of service for Saint Vincent de Paul or SvdP Fish

Fries, . Service is to be documented with number of hours and signature of supervisor.

o Show official acceptance to one of the degree programs listed above along with the application for

Scholarship on or before 15 April of your Senior year. (This is not a requirement for those who will

be eligible for the Award beginning with the graduating class of 2021.)

Like the Scholarship Fund before, the Graduate Award Fund will be funded by a percentage of the monthly Parish

weekly collections.

NOTE WELL: Any student or parent(s) who wishes to contest the denial of a scholarship or award may meet

with a joint session of the Parish Pastoral Council, the Parish Finance Council, and the Parish Priest to voice

their concerns. The Parish Priest will no longer meet individually with those who wish to contest these

requirements or a denial of eligibility.

Thank you to those who have been responsible in meeting the requirements for the Parish Scholarship.

Thank you to those who were respectful when a Parish Scholarship was declined due to a Student’s failure to meet

the requirements.

Thank you to the Parishioners who have made these Scholarships possible.

Thank you to those who will make the Parish Graduate Award possible for future graduates of St Joseph Parish.

In Christ,
