AN INVITATION TO REMEMBER ALL SOULS DAY

MASS OF REMEMBRANCE —NOVEMBER 2

All Souls Day is the Church’s great

feast to pray for those who have died. Besides our

regularly scheduled Masses, the parish will have a

special Mass at 1:00 pm at which we will read aloud the

names of those who have died since this time last year

whose funerals have taken place at Saint Joseph

Church. Families who have had a funeral here will be

receiving letters of invitation to this Mass.

In addition, we extend an invitation to anyone who has

lost a family member or friend during the time period

of November 2012 to November 2013, even if the

funeral took place elsewhere. If you did not receive a

letter and plan to attend this Mass, we invite you to add

the name of your loved one to the remembrance list.

Please call 201-261-0148 or email the Parish office at

[email protected] by October 30.

TWENTY NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, OCTOBER 20, 2013

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Monday evenings at 7:30 pm parishioners gather before the Blessed Sacrament in Mary’s Chapel to pray the Miraculous Medal Novena, a devotion that grew out of the life of

Saint Catherine Labouré (1806-1876), a French Sister of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul, who worked in a hospice for many years. She was also a mystic, who shared her visions only with her confessor until shortly before her death. The most fruitful of these were of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and resulted in a medal Catherine had made to emphasize Our Lady’s Immaculate Conception. Soon the devotion that grew from this medal became known for the conversions and miraculous cures it gave rise to. If you have a burdensome concern, or would just like to gather for some peaceful prayers of confident trust in Mary’s care, come to the Monday novena.

The Association of the Miraculous Medal in Perryville, Missouri, ran this anonymous prayer not long ago. It captures the Spirit of the novena.

God, sometimes I just want to give up, go off someplace and hide. I get so tired I don’t want to try any more. Where can I find the courage and strength to go on? The idea that things will get better isn’t enough. The thought that adversity builds character doesn’t convince me. The only one who gives me any hope is Jesus. May I find in His life the pattern according to which I can live mine. Amen.

When Monsignor John Demkovich retired as

Pastor of Saint Mary’s Church in Passaic after serving there for forty years, he mentioned something Blessed John Paul II said, which is very good to recall in October, a month dedicated to the values that support life: Place your intelligence , your talents,

your enthusiasm, your compassion and fortitude at the service of life. Have no fear because the outcome of the battle is already decided. Jesus wins! Who but the Author of Life can satisfy the expectations that He himself has put into our hearts? Be proud of our faith

in Jesus. And get busy, because Jesus needs you; his Church needs you!

ARCHDIOCESE ACTS TO PROTECT YOUTH AND CHILDREN

Archbishop Myers has stated categorically that the primary responsibilities of the Archdiocese are to protect children and young people, and to promote the healing of, and provide compassion to, victims of abuse.

The Archdiocese of Newark requires all staff and volunteers working with children and youth to undergo background checks and receive sexual abuse training. More than 20,000 Clergy, Religious and Lay people have received this training and undergone criminal background checks.

Nearly 95,000 children annually receive safe environment training through our Catholic schools and through opportunities offered to public school students in our religious education program.

The Archdiocese utilizes the services of a Licensed Clinical Social Worker as the contact for individuals who allege that they were abused so that counseling and other support services can be offered immediately if appropriate—sometimes even before a determination is made regarding the credibility of an allegation.

A full-time Office of Child and Youth Protection dedicated to protecting children works with parishes and schools to ensure that safe environments are in place throughout the Archdiocese.

PROTECTING GOD’S CHILDREN —OCTOBER 28

There will be a Protecting God’s Children Workshop on Monday, October 28 at 7:00 pm in Saint Joseph Lower School Gym.

Any employee or any volunteer who works with children should attend this workshop.

Go to virtusonline.org to register.

OCTOBER IS RESPECT LIFE MONTH

We join together in prayer and fasting for a restoration of a culture of life and love and for the protection of religious liberty.

SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ

Compiled by the Liturgy of the Word With Children Committee

The Gospel is the Good News about Jesus.

The Gospel Reading for today is from

Saint Luke 18:1-8.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells us a story about

a judge and a widow. The widow keeps

asking the judge for help with a problem she

is having. For a long time, the judge won’t

give her an answer but she keeps on asking

him. Finally, he gives in and helps her. The

widow received help because she kept on

asking over and over and did not quit.

Jesus tells us this story to point out that God

is loving and because of his love for us he

will help us when we ask him for help. You

can ask over and over. There is never a limit

to how many times you can ask God for help.

“Don’t give up!” God will listen and will

help because God loves us.

But remember—you may not get exactly

what you want from God. God will give you

what you need. It may not be material items

like toys, but rather things like happiness and

safety. Be sincere in your request. Remember

God is like your father and “what father can

deny his child?”

MISSION OF THE WEEK

Pray this prayer:

Lord, help me see that you answer

my prayers every day and to know the

difference between what I ask for and

what I need from you.

Amen.

When the widow asked over and over, the judge

gave her help.
