T here are many things that we need to do annually when the moisture and colder temperatures begin to set in.
Don’t worry, I’m not going to bore you to death by talking about weather stripping, cleaning the gutters and bringing in the patio furniture. I want to talk about creating a warm, sumptuous interior that makes you want to hibernate in your space for days. Creating the proper ambiance is the key. You want to introduce warm textures, colours and lighting into your existing space.
Sheepskin throws and rugs are one of my current obsessions. They create warmth in any space and are very practical. They are light and fl uffy but also create a comfortable cushion of air through their layers keeping you warm and snuggly. There are many colours and sizes that you can buy in both real and synthetic options. They look great on the fl oor in front of a roaring fi re or draped over the back of a chair.
Winter is also the time to bring out all of your knitted throw blankets. You defi nitely need one handy to curl up under while reading a book or watching a
movie with your loved ones.
Candles are the perfect accent for setting the mood. The days are becoming shorter and shorter
with the sun setting before most of us even make it home from work. Losing this natural light affects us all in different ways. By bringing in candlelight or the light of a fi re, it creates a warm, cozy feeling that provides a more intimate setting and helps to fi ght the depressing grey days.
Jewel tones are the perfect colours to add to your space for the winter months.You want colours that will offset the grey days outside and add an element of richness to your space. Some of my current favourites are teal, emerald, aubergine and burgundy. They look great in any combination, as well as on their own. They also carry over well when decorating for the holidays. Add a shag rug in one of these colours to instantly warm up your hardwood fl oors.
Nothing warms up your interiors like appealing to all the senses! Throw on some sultry jazz, warm the house up with a batch of homemade cookies and settle in with your new updated, cozy décor.
