T he Princess and the Pea is a legendary story of a lady trying to get a good night’s sleep. We can all take a page from her book and

prioritize how important it is to get a restful slumber. Choosing a mattress is very important and very personal decision. It is one that is very separate from choosing the bed frame style, as it comes down to comfort. Here are a few things to consider when purchasing a mattress:

Material: There are many options available for materials of the mattress. Memory foam, regular foam, pocket coil… The list goes on and there are also many combinations from which to choose.

Size: Some people need lots of room to spread out while others prefer tight quarters. It is a personal decision based on how much room a person needs to get a sound sleep. There are options including a Californian King, which is longer than a traditional King, for all of the tall people in the world. Keep in mind that it may be diffi cult to purchase sheets, as not all brands have this style available.

Thickness: Many of the pillow top mattresses are gigantic! You might need a ladder to get into bed. This is a great look when you are going for the style of a grand captain’s bed. However, for many it is awkward and hard to get into. Also, it is diffi cult to achieve a contemporary look when your mattress covers most of your headboard.

Firmness: This is where Goldilocks crosses into our story. You will need to lay on a few different mattresses to decide what fi rmness is right for you.

Some like a soft plush mattress, while others prefer a fi rm, supportive base.

Warranty: Many large mattress companies will offer a length of time that you can sleep on the mattress in the comfort of your own home, and still return it if you aren’t satisfi ed. This takes some of the guess work and pressure out of the buying process.
