PENN-TRAFFORD AREA RECREATION COMMISSION PTARC is a non-profit, intergovernmental agency serving residents of the communities of the Penn-Trafford School District, which includes the Boroughs of Manor, Penn and Trafford and the Township of Penn. Hempfield Area School District residents who live in Manor Borough pay the resident fee.

Trafford BY Park Playground DCNR Grant Project Grant funds for municipal facilities go into separate accounts and are used exclusively for the municipal grant project. PTARC writes the grant applications and administers the grant project upon grant award, but receives none of the grant funding.

Special Events

10th Anniversary Photo Contest PTARC is 10 years old! To celebrate we’d like to share your PTARC activity memories through your photographs of participation in PTARC activities or at PTARC facilities. Just email your favorite digital photos to Cheryl Kemerer at [email protected] by October 15, 2011. Winning photographers will receive a gift certificate for future PTARC activities. Winning photographs will be announced at the Holiday Kickoff Concert on November 19, 2011 at Penn Middle School, will be framed and hung at the PTARC offices, and appear in the 2011 Winter/Spring Activity Guide which is mailed to all Penn Trafford School District residents at the end of December 2011! Ho! Ho! Ho! Letters from the North Pole - Pre-schoolers through age 8 Astonish your child with a letter from Santa Claus this Christmas season. Santa will not reveal exactly what the child will be receiving. Letters will be mailed during the week of December 12th. Fee: $5 per letter Registration deadline: November 23, 2011

Aquatics American Red Cross Swimming Instruction Babies with Parents - Ages 1-3 A parent or guardian must participate with the child. Introduction to the water through fun activities.

Pre-Swim (Level I) - Ages 4-5 Water exploration skills: Children must be able to listen to oral instruction and get in the water without their parents. Assists students in feeling comfortable in the water. All children below age 6 must take Pre-Swim. Children ages 4-5 who can float both on front and back by themselves and are comfortable in deep water are taught in a separate group.

Beginners (Levels II and III) - Ages 6 and Up Students are tested during the first class and are separated by ability into Level II or Level III.

Advanced Beginners/Intermediates/Swimmers (Levels IV, V, and VI) - Ages 6 and Up Child must have completed the preceding level and received a passing card to move up to the next level.

Water Safety Instructor – Ages 16 & up If you can swim and are interested in assisting with the teaching of these classes, call PTARC at 724-744-2171 ext. 204. Certification course includes 40 hours of book work, pool work and hands-on training. Must attend all sessions and pass test at conclusion. $90 fee includes books and materials. Gettysburg: Little Round Top, Devil's Den, and the Valley of Death This class will cover in-depth the Confederate assault and Federal defense on the extreme Union Left at Gettysburg, July 2, 1863. We will explore what led up to the assault, why it failed as well as the stories of the men, monuments, and commanders. Facility Rental The Penn-Trafford Area Recreation Commission owns and operates the following facilities available for rental purposes.

PTARC/Shelley Proskin Recreation Center, 708 State Route 130, Trafford (seating for 100) Banquet Room - Maximum 149 $35/hour event time, $50 minimum Security Deposit required for all rentals: $100 (security deposit check destroyed upon successful facility inspection and key return) Hours Available: 9:00 am - 10:00 pm, Sunday - Thursday; 9:00 am - 11:00 pm, Friday & Saturday; Closed Easter Sunday, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve & Christmas Day. Person responsible for the rental must be at least 18 years of age. Handicapped accessible. Non-smoking.

All decorations, table cloths, food, and paper products must be removed and trash must be deposited in the dumpster. Bring trash bags, dish rags, towels, and cleaners for cleaning up. Wipe clean tables, counters, and sink. Return tables to original positions. Please carry tables; do not drag across floor. Remove all items brought into the building. Turn off all lights and lock doors before leaving. Glitter and confetti are prohibited. No glass bottles. Re-set thermostat to initial temperature. Clean floor. Violation of the above procedure will result in the loss of your security deposit and/or the forfeiture of the privilege of using the building in the future. Penn-Trafford area non-profit organizations receive a 20% discount of rental fee. Non-residents of the Penn-Trafford School District pay an additional 20% rental fee.

About Friends of PTARC Who Are We Are? Friends of Penn-Trafford Area Recreation Commission is a non-profit, tax-exempt Pennsylvania corporation created to provide funding for community organizations, including the Penn-Trafford Area Recreation Commission, to support community projects, recreational programs and activities, and community development projects. What Do We Do? Friends of PTARC has established as its goal to raise funds to complete the rehabilitation of the former kindergarten/library building in Level Green into the PTARC/Shelley Proskin Recreation Center. In 2008, the completion of the new parking configuration took place at a cost of $80,000.

How Can You Help? In 2012 Friends of PTARC is asking community-minded organizations and individuals to donate funds, materials, labor, and/or their time to assist in the completion of this project. Why Should You Help? The PTARC/Shelley Proskin Recreation Center provides:

• A place for families to hold birthday parties, bridal and baby showers, graduation parties, and anniversary celebrations.

• A facility for parents and caregivers to take pre-school children for fun activities and early childhood education.

• A place for after-school activities, club meetings, fitness and fun activities for school-aged children.

• A facility for life-long learning, fitness, and wellness activities for adults.

• A place for seniors to gather, socialize, participate in activities and exercise.

Please Register Early Pre-registration is required unless otherwise noted. The number of participants is limited. Registration is taken first come, first served. Registration is not accepted at class, as classes may be filled or canceled. Registrations will not be accepted after classes have met for the second time.

Payment Registrations will not be accepted without the payment of fees. You can pay the registration fee by mail or in person at:

PTARC’s office is located in the Penn Township Municipal Building. Checks or money orders should be made payable to PTARC. MasterCard & Discover now accepted! 2.45% convenience fee ($1.50 minimum) applies. Residency PTARC serves the residents of the communities within the Penn-Trafford School District, including those living within the borders of Manor, Penn, and Trafford Boroughs, and Penn Township. All residents of Manor Borough are included. Non-Resident Registration: Registrations from non-residents will be accepted. Non-residents pay an additional $10 for trips and an additional 20% for all other programs. Non-Resident Family passes are available (3 registrations for $25, 6 registrations for $40) and give non-resident families the opportunity to register at the resident fee. Good for 1 year for family members residing at the same address.

Refund Policy For programs scheduled to meet 3 or more times, a full refund less a $5 processing fee will be given if you cancel your registration at least 24 hours before the first meeting.

Registrations canceled after the first meeting date will be given a program voucher for the days not attended less a $5 processing fee. Program vouchers are not transferable to another person. No refunds will be given after the second meeting date of any program. For classes scheduled to meet less than 3 times, a full refund less a $5 processing fee will be made if the cancellation is received at least 1 week before the first class meeting. For trips and tours, a refund, less a $5 processing fee and any trip fees, will be made if the cancellation is received at least 3 weeks before the trip date. There is a $30 cancellation fee for facility rentals.

Attendance Attend the first day of the program as scheduled. You will only be notified by PTARC if a program is filled, postponed, or canceled. PTARC cannot be responsible for the make-up of sessions missed for personal reasons. If you miss a session, you are advised to contact the instructor about assignments or announcements. A registered participant cannot transfer his or her right to attend a program to another person.

Class Cancellations Programs held in Penn Trafford School District facilities are cancelled whenever schools are closed. Schools are closed September 5, November 8, 24, 25, and 28. PTARC reserves the right to cancel, postpone, or reschedule any program that does not meet a minimum number of class participants. Every effort will be made to reschedule sessions missed for unanticipated cancellations or postponements encountered during a program. Rescheduling is not guaranteed.

Insurance PTARC does not carry insurance to cover the hospitalization or the medical cost of persons injured during the course of participation or spectating at any of PTARC’s programs or events. All participants enter programs at their own risk.

Accessibility Every effort will be made for people of all abilities to participate in PTARC programs. People with disabilities, requiring special accommodations, must contact the PTARC office before the start of the program, so that arrangements can be made for successful participation.

Financial Assistance The Penn-Trafford Area Recreation Commission is committed to serving all residents of the Penn-Trafford School District regardless of financial status.
