My name is DaMara Buckley. I re-cently graduated from Carroll Uni-versity in Exercise Science with a minor in Business Management. I decided to pursue this degree be-cause of my strong love for fitness and exercise. I did my internship as a personal trainer at Gold’s Gym and was then hired as a trainer. I love the impact you can have on someone’s day or life through fitness. I am ex-cited to bring my knowledge and skills I have learned to Shorewood.

We are excited to announce the appointment of Dr. Bryan Da-vis as the new Superintendent of Shorewood Schools. Dr. Da-vis was chosen after an extensive search.“We are confident that we found the right fit for Shorewood with Dr. Davis,” said School Board President Paru Shah. “He has a proven track record of meeting the needs of all students, including underachieving and high-achieving students, and comes to our District with a depth and breadth of experience which will serve us well. Dr. Davis will be an invaluable asset to us as both an educational and community leader.”Dr. Davis holds a BSE in Business Education, Masters in Edu-cational Administration, and Ph. D. in Urban Education from UW-Milwaukee. He has served as the Superintendent of the

Columbus School District, in Columbus, WI since 2010, and previously held positions as Principal of Green Bay Southwest High School and Associate Principal of Green Bay Preble High School.“I am humbled to be selected to serve as the next Superintendent of the Shorewood School Dis-trict,” Dr. Davis remarked. “My wife, our daughters, and I are looking forward to living in Shorewood and becoming active members of the community.”During his time at Columbus, Dr. Davis increased student performance, oversaw a major district-wide renovation, and established the Project Lead the Way/STEM programming for grades K-12. The Shorewood School Board and District are looking forward to working with Dr. Davis and wel-coming him and his family to the Shorewood community.

Meet Shorewood’S New SuperiNteNdeNt...

I look forward to helping to teach others new skills while also gain-ing new experiences and build relationships. In the gym, I love lifting heavy and finding new limits for myself. Outside of work and the gym, I enjoy spending my time outdoors. I grew up in Waukesha, so I am excited to explore Shorewood.

SCHOOL DISTRICT OF SHOREWOOD- BRIGHT BEGINNINGS PRESCHOOL 2015 - 2016 SCHOOL YEAR

Bright Beginnings Preschool focuses on the individual child, and provides an educational environment that stimulates and nurtures each child’s unique growth potential. We provide numerous exciting and engaging thematic units throughout the year, allowing your children to freely explore and grow in important skill development areas, including: large and fine motor skills, language and literacy, science and math, art and music. Your child’s social and emotional development is of prime importance. At Bright Beginnings, we help each child grow in her or her feelings of self-worth, self-confidence, respect, appreciation of others, love of learning and of school. Our curriculum reflects the most current understanding regarding child development and early education, and embraces Shorewood School District curriculum goals. Our classroom ratio is two adults for sixteen students.

Bright Beginnings will follow the school year calendar for the 2015 - 2016 school year. When the elementary schools do not have school, Bright Beginnings will not be held.

PRESCHOOL TOILETING GUIDELINES: All children are to be completely toilet trained before the first day of school. If your child is not complete toilet trained, you will be required to be present in the classroom and assist your child with toileting needs. Teachers and volunteers will assist children with buttons or snaps on clothing as necessary. Independence and reinforcement of self-help skills will be encouraged by the teachers.

Grade 5 - 6The students enrolled in the Down to Earth Experimental Physics (DEEP) program learn, through fun hands-on experiments and instructive demos, about physical phenomena such as mechanical waves, light reflection, refraction and dispersion (i.e., separation into color components), and their application to developing physical instruments to study large astronomical objects (e.g., stars) as well as small microscopic particles (e.g., biological cells, molecules, and atoms). In addition, the students learn how to build and use various devices: a toy guitar, convex and concave lenses cut out of Jell-O, a telescope, a microscope, a spectrograph for analyzing light color, and an electrical circuit including an LED light source to study absorption of light by various substanc-es. At the end of each session, the students take home the device they built to play with and to show to their family and friends. The program culminates with a visit to the Planetarium and the Physics Department’s research laboratories at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.This program is co-sponsored with the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and is offered by Prof. Vali Raicu and Mrs. Gina Raicu to students who were not enrolled in the program previously. This program was offered previously by the District’s Advanced Learning Department.

zumba Zumba is a fusion of Latin and International music - dance themes that create a dynamic, exciting and effective fitness system! The routines feature aerobic fitness interval training with a combination of fast and slow rhythms that tone and sculpt the body. Zumba uti-lizes the principles of fitness interval training and resistance training to maximize caloric output, fat burning and total body toning. It is a mixture of body sculpting movements with easy to follow dance steps.Page 7, 9Instructor: Michelle Streng, Certified Zumba Instructor

zumba toning / sentaoThis course is a combination of two new Zumba classes - Zumba Toning and Zumba Sentao. The class will switch every other week with Toning and Sentao.

Zumba Sentao combines strength and resistance training with in-novative dance-fitness moves, all centered around a chair.

Zumba Toning takes the original Zumba dance-fitness class to the next level, utilizing an innovative muscle training program with the addition of light weight toning sticks or dumbbells. You will need to bring a set of either 1# weights or 2.5# weights with you to class each week. You may purchase weights through the instruc-tor. The cost is $20 for a set of 1# weights and $30 for a set of 2.5# weights.Page 7, 9Instructor: Michelle Streng, Certified Zumba Instructor

1. a message to Parents For all programs, age and grade requirement will be as of the first day of the class, unless otherwise specified. Please only register your child in the class when he/she meets the requirements. All age and grade requirements are set to benefit the child and make instruction consistent for the instructor. In some instances, the requirements have been set for the child’s safety.

2. sPeciaL notice to Parents oF youtH Program ParticiPants

Parents are reminded to pick their children up at the completion time listed for the activity they are participating in. Recreation staff are not responsible for participants once their class is com-pleted (they are not paid to wait for parents who are late in picking up their children.) We also ask parents to stress to their children that when they are in a school building, they should go directly to their program activity area and not wander around the build-ing. We do not wish to lose our privilege to utilize these facilities because of participants being where they should not be. Your cooperation with this is greatly appreciated.

3. disruPtive ParticiPants

During the course of our programs, there have been times that disruptive participants have impacted our classes. Our instruc-tors try to work with these participants; however, sometimes the behavior becomes such that it affects the ability of the other students to learn, of the instructor to teach, or provide a safe learning environment. The following procedure will be in effect if problems occur:a. Verbal contact between instructor and program participant and/or parent. b. Verbal contact between the Recreation Department and pro-gram participant and/or parent. c. Reoccurrence following these conversations will result in re-moval from the program. There will be no refund of fees for individuals removed from pro-grams due to disruptive behavior. The determination of program offering depends on the number of registered participants.

4. on-site registration

Instructors will not accept registration or payment at the class site. All registration transactions must be complete at the Rec-reation Department or Fitness Center prior to classes starting, or by the sign-up deadline.
