If you walk into CPAC on a Wednesday evening around 6:30, you are bound to hear chatter and laughter coming from a room just past the entrance way, recep-tionist desks and lounge chairs. Inside youll fi nd a group of women,

hot beverages, snacks, and babbling in-fants who are being passed around and played with. Signs decorate the tables and share information about upcoming events and different supports the MFRC has for military members and their fami-lies. If it happens to be a special occasion, a craft table may be set up at the back of the room. While the faces of the people may

change, the atmosphere of the Deploy-ment Coffee Nights stays the same. Its a warm and welcoming environment for those whose signifi cant others are away, or for anyone else who just wants to come and hang out. And while the majority of those who go are women, men are more than welcome to attend, because Deploy-ment Coffee Nights are one of the ways that the MFRC tries to help military members and their families avoid and

cope with the loneliness that distance can create. For Krystalyn Hunt, whose husband is cur-

rently in Borden, Ontario, the coffee nights are a great way to cope, because they allow her to get out of the house to meet people. Its great to get out of the house and talk to people. And, knowing theyre military, you know theyll under-stand. She started to attend the coffee nights after her husband left and the get-togethers she and her friends planned fi zzled out due to fi guring out kids and work and other stuff with life.Although the focus of the coffee nights is

to allow family members to share how they deal with their partners departure and ab-sence, and learn about others coping strat-egies, anything is fair game to be chatted about, from unruly children and funny family stories, to the neighbours and well-wishers who just dont understand, and ev-erything in between. For Hunt, its about getting out of the

house and being around other women who can understand what youre going through.

Even if its not exactly the same, they can relate. The Deployment Coffee Nights take place

on most Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Visit www.esquimaltmfrc.com to view

the upcoming schedule. While there is no cost to attend one of the Deployment Cof-fee Nights, please call the MFRC at 250-363-2640 at least fi ve days in advance to register, especially if you will be using the free childcare. The MFRC also has other services de-

signed to help members and their families prepare and deal with deployment, such as the Deployment Dinners and a variety of workshops on dealing with deployment for both adults and children.Christina is a writer, MFRC volunteer,

military spouse, and a new parent who moved to Victoria this past year.
