More than 9000 children visited the Eastern Limb Human Resources

Develoment Career Expo 2013 of the mining industry which was

hosted by Samancor Tubatse Chrome at Steelpoort this week.

The Expo was officially opened by Limpopo MEC for Economic

Development, Environment and Tourism, Mr Charles Sekoeati, wo

addressed guests on behalf of the Premier, Mr Stanley Mathabatha,

who could not attend the opening function on Tuesday. . General

Manager of Tubatse Ferrochrome, Mr Andor Esbach, addressedguests, while buses with senior learners from schools in the area

arrived at the Tubatse Chrome Club. Mr Andries Nieuwoudt of

Tubatse Chrome explained the reason for the mines’ involvement in

investing in better school facilities, but added that better facilities

alone will not produce the manpower with the skills mines need for

the future if quality education with well trained teachers are not

prevalent, which is the government’s side of the partnership. Only

then can the dream of a prosperous future for learners and

communities be guaranteed. He also explained that the career expo

served the purpose of giving learners hope and guidance and

practically showed them to what careers the correct subject choice

and results in schools may lead to. This aspect was important to give

learners access to to the myriad of bursaries made available by the

industry to insure human resources for sustainable mining industry

development.

The Limpopo MEC for Education Mme Dikeledi Magadzi told the

audience that the government and the industry shared the same

dream and hopes for the future and that various project by the

department, as weel as joint projects with the industry are makinggood progress towards realising objectives. She also stated that not

only should local learners be made aware of career options in mining

and related industries, but that these industries should also be

propagated to other schools in the province not directly in the vicinity

of the mining belt.

After enjoying some refreshments, the dignitaries from

government and the mines took a tour of the expowhere they chatted

to learners and exhibitors.

negatiewe dinge. Ek probeer elke dag voluit

lewe en my beste gee.

Sonder Hom in my lewe sou ek geensins

sal vergeet nie en ek wil nie hê die mense nabyaan my moet my so sien nie. Ek dink mensemoenie kankerlyers skielik anders behandel

Dit was baie swaarvir my kinders om my so siek te sien”.

Wanneer jy so ‘n kort tydjie gegee word omte lewe soos ek, kry jy alles in orde. Dinge

geen kankerlyer by ‘n verdoemende

Dominee Hennie Grobler - selfs in u moeiliketyd het u my en my gesin bygestaan enbemoedig. Dankie daarvoor.

Daar is ‘n Engelse spreekwoord

greatest blessing call me Mom! Ek is oneindiglief vir julle!”

Ina Burger is ‘n groot ondersteuner vanBandana Dag.

Winter Warmer Campaign

The Mandela Day campaign

message is simple: Mr Mandela

gave 67 years of his life fighting for

the rights of humanity. All we are

asking is that everyone gives 67

minutes of their time, whether it’s

supporting your chosen charity or

serving your local

community.Mandela Day is a call

to action for individuals – for

people everywhere – to take

responsibility for changing the

world into a better place, one

small step at a time, just as Mr

Mandela did. ECM did some repair

work and painting at the

Mangabane Creche with the help

of ECM contractors. We would like

to thank everybody who gave 67

minutes of their day for this good

cause.

27 July 2013 was the 10th

anniversary of the Wildevy 4x4

challenge. This event is an annual

event hosted by the Wildevy Manne

from the local area. With this event,

money is raised to support local community initiatives. ECM participated in

manning of an obstacle point and also the Potjiekos competition. We are proud

to announce that we won the following prizes: Best Potjiekos, Best Team Spirit,

Best Theme, Most Original Theme and Best Obstacle Point. Our theme this

year was Breast Cancer awareness.

On 9 August 1956, 20,000

women staged a march

on the Union Buildings in

Pretoria to protestagainst the proposed

amendments to the

Urban Areas Act

(commonly known as the

pass laws) of 1950. They

left bundles of petitions containing more than 100

000 signatures at prime minister JG Strijdom’s office

doors. Outside they stood silently for 30 minutes,

many with their children on their backs.

The women sang a protest song that was composed

in honour of the occasion: Wathint’Abafazi

Wathint’imbokodo!(Now you have touched the

women, you have struck a rock.). In the 54 years

since, the phrase (or its latest incarnation: “ you

strike a woman, you strike a rock”) has come to

represent women’s courage and strength in South

Africa.

On 24 August 2013, ECM hosted a Women’s Day

lunch at Winterveld Rec Club. Some of ouremployees showed their talents by reading their

own poems. The motivational speaker for the day

was Amanda van Zyl. She again made the ladies

aware of their importance in society. She said “

Beautiful people do not just happen...They have

bloomed through heartache, defeat, suffering and

loss. Like a pearl, a woman’s true beauty is reflected

by the light from within.”

Development indicators released by the

Minister of Performance Monitoring andEvaluation in the Presidency, Collins

Chabane show that most South Africans areproud to be a part of this country. The indicators also showed how far thenation has come in terms of becoming a unit

that considers themselves one with noregard to race or language.88% of people targeted in the research were

proud to be South African, but only 58% see

a happy future for all races.Only 4.1% of people described themselvesby their language or tribe while only 8.8%used race as an indicator to describethemselves.

Social cohesion in the country is howevernot just measured in the relations betweenblack and white. Determining factors also

incorporate discrimination based on: sexism, ethnicity, class and xenophobia.Mr Sandile Mamela, chief director for social

cohesion at the Department of Arts &Culture said: “All forms of self-identity ordiscrimination or social measurement basedon race, ethnicity and other forms of

prejudicial standards should be seriouslyreconsidered or done away with. This can

only happen when individuals, organisations

and communities emphasise and promotetheir South African identity and judge peopleby the content of their character and notrace or language”.He adds: “We cannot relieve ourconsciences by blaming external factors for

how we treat fellow citizens. The problemhere is that many people are reluctant totake responsibility for what happens in this

country”.He also emphasises that it would beincorrect to just presume everything is well

within the black community while differentinterest groups are splintering them apart. After almost 20 years of democracy how doyou think about yourself and others? This

was the question we asked readers thisweek. They also explained how they see

racism in our area and country.

Mr Charles Banda said: “I agree that people

are seeing themselves as mostly proudlySouth African. There are quite a lot ofchanges since the new South Africa. Thereis still a minority who needs transformation.Especially those who were previouslyaffected by the apartheid era need to change

their mindset after they were treated sobadly. Racism is still a problem from aminority, but they try to hide it”.

Mr Nicholas Mnisi and Mr Mandla Mgiba said: “Racism is no longer a problem in SouthAfrica. People of all colours are everywhere. We think that we are all equal”.

Mnr. JB Willers sê: “Ongelukkig dink ek niedat Suid-Afrikaners so ‘n mooi eenheidgevorm het nie.

Mr Isaiah Malepe said: “I think there is stillpartial discrimination based on race in South

Africa. I, myself don’t have a problem withpeople from any race or language. Everyone

is the same and I wish we could have thesame spirit. BEE is dividing the nation. Itdoes not help to create one nation. I don’tlike the BEE setup. People should be treated

the same, no matter what their gender orrace. Affirmative action should also go.Sometimes they employ someone, justbecause they are the correct gender,

although better applicants who are morequalified applied for the position”.

Mr Lamett Mahloko said: “Racism is still a

problem in South Africa and in our area.

Everyone should be treated the same. I treateveryone the same. We are all humanbeings. BEE is alright. The problem is justthat people in the procurement departmentsat companies do not give preference to

people from BEE companies”.

Mr Doctor Masinga said: “I feel we are one.Not white or black. There are still towns withracism but we try to be one. There are some

challenges”.

Mr Vusi Maphanga said: “It is not true.

People are still being oppressed even it theyare free. I am seeing all South Africans as

one, no matter what colour they are.Especially the Zimbaweans in South Africaare being treated badly. You will find thateven the police will go to those selling air

time and just demand to take it. They cannotdo anything because they are not SouthAfrican and it is the police doing it”.

Right: Mr Mack Mogashoa said: “We areequal now. We’ve come a long way. If wefocus on colour it will bring a lot ofdestruction to the youth. I just see fellow

human beings in people around me. Racismis still a problem where people are noteducated”.

Black, White, Coloured, Indian

Mr Cafrin Magabe and Mr Mmusho Magabe said: “15% of people are still discriminating

based on race. Most people don’t take into account whether you are black or white. That 15%

who is discriminating is mostly within the mines. We see ourselves as just South African andthe same as everyone else”.

Me. Nieas wit of swart nie. Elkeen dink net aan

hulself en niemand anders tel nie”.

Mr Sipho Silinda said: “The elements ofracism are still there. It will take time forpeople to accept that there is no room forracism. I don’t judge people by their skinpigmentation - it is just how God created us.There are still people living in a dream world

- who cannot let go of racism. I feel it is timeto let go of racism. BEE has not materialised

much as you’ll often find that those who werepreviously disadvantaged are used forfronting companies and don’t really benefit.Companies must do more to get employment

equity”.

Left: Mr Sydney Makgopa said: “Racism is

not a problem at all now. Culture things are

coming to an end. We are becoming one. I just notice the person and not their colour. There is no more areas that are just for whiteor black people”.

Mr Mndebele Putine said: “Only blacksaccept whites as compatriots. Whites are still

afraid of black people. Whites see black

people as thieves. In the work sector whitesare also preferred to blacks. There are a fewwhites who are different, but most still havea problem”.

Links: Mnr. Gerrit Kriek sê: “Rassisme is nog

erg - veral in werksplekke. BEE enemployment equity is ‘n groot faktore wat dierasisme aanblaas. Ek respekteer almal en

verwag dieselfde terug. By hom isZenel.

Left: Ms MmasakuMohale said: “Wehave come a longway but we still havea lot more to do. We

must acknowledgethe progress. But thechallenges are still

there. I think ofmyself as firstly aSouth African.

Colour should not bean issue”. With her isBobo.

Mr MA Muroa said: “I see other people ashuman beings created by God as fellow

South Africans. I work all over with white and

black people. There is no boundaries. I thinkwe are winning the racism thing”.

Bo: Me. LeonaRandall sê: “Ja,veral in die stedesien mense mekaar

as net Suid-Afrikaners. Ek sienmyself as ‘n‘African ’, dis waarons roots is. Hoe

meer ons mekaar so

sien hoe beter.
