On 7 and 8 October 2010 a group of localSteelpoort, Burgersfort, Lydenburg andPretoria based businessmen embarked ona “battery charging session” at the farmInniebos, near Gethlane Lodge atBurgersfort.

The session entailed variousdiscussions and metaphors on tracking(Vat Spoor), relating the concept back tobusiness with a strong spiritual impact. The session was organized by localSteelpoort security company ThorburnSecurity Solutions in conjunction withlocal Inniebos farm owner and Lydenburgpastor Egbert Hiemstra.

“This was an idea deriving from ahunting campfire session in July 2010which became a reality”, Egbert Hiemstracommented at the opening session.

Callie Roos from Callie Roos &Associates, who facilitated this process, has a unique blend of lifetime experiencesincluding that of Student Leader,Community Leader, Senior Pastor, SpecialForces Operator, Land and Sea SurvivalSpecialist, Senior Military Staff Officer

and serving as an Honorary Game Rangerwith National Parks in South Africa.

Roos shared his various tracking, military and spiritual experiences with thegroup allowing for amongst othersconstructive and very powerful campfiredialogue. Roos warned that the “tracks”businessmen leave behind must show thepurpose of the business and its leadersand that sufficient “time out” is requiredto constantly evaluate the quality, direction and purpose of the track thatbusinessmen leave behind.

He regards amongst otherthankfulness, inspiration, strong gutfeelings, vision, ownership, etc as buildingblocks for a business’ purpose.

Everybody praised the session as anecessity for businessmen to get exposedto.

“We need to know how we leave ourtracks and how our tracks are interpretedby our families, our business colleaguesand our communities” Thorburn SecurityManaging Director Dolf Scheeperscommented at the closing of the session.

Storm wreaks havocA storm hit Mokutung village near Echo Caves on Mondayafternoon this week. According to residents little rain fell, butthe wind was ferocious, taking the roofs of several houses withit. The roof of a church was also taken off by the wind (bottomphotograph), but villagers already reapaired it when PlatinumGazette visited on Wednesday. The worst hit house was that ofthe Masuku family, near the church. The roofs of seven roomsin the house was blown off and the roof covering plates landedin the vegetable garden. According to Ms Letta Masuku(photograph right) two of the eight people living in the house, are disabled, one is blind and the other cannot walk. ByWednesday this house was still badly in need of repair. Just asPlatinum Gazette started to leave, a representative of theDisaster Management section of the Greater TubatseMunicipality, Mr Elias Boshego (photograph bottom left)arrived at the scene to assess the damage. It seems that part ofthe problem with the house’s roof is that the rafters wereattacked by termites, making it easy for the wind to pull out thescrews holding the roof plates. As far as could be determined damage to other property in thevillage was not that severe.

ATMs bombed

In the past week two ATM’s were targeted by robbers. Last week the ATM at theLionvalley Garage was destroyed in a blast. On Wednesday evening Capitec Bank inBurgersfort’s Dirk Winterbach road was targeted. Yesterday morning the debris wasstill everywhere. By the time of going to press no official reports were received fromthe SAPS regarding the incidents.

The Limpopo Youth Commissionwished all learners and students wellfor their up coming examinations.“With one week away from their finalexamination, as a Commission wewould like to congratulate all grade 12learners who have made it thus farand call upon them make us proud”said Ms Thembi Siweya of theCommission.“In the same spirit of the FIFA WorldCup we want to declare every Friday aMatric Friday until learners finishtheir exams. Learners, parents, SGBsand the community at large areencouraged to put on their schooluniform or anything that symbolizesschool on Fridays. We do so in showingour support to these learners and weencourage leaders, parents and thesociety at large to heed to this call”she said.“We continue to champion theprioritization of education simplybecause Youth Development cannot beattained for as long as a majority ofour youth is still leaving in apathy.Hence it remains important forlearners and students to remainfocused on their examination and tounderstand that education remainstheir only hope if they want to seedevelopment in their lives, communities and the country at large.

“The Commission remains committedto the advancement of one of thepriorities of the MillenniumDevelopment Goals and the SouthAfrican Government, the call ofensuring that we ‘educate the Africanchild’. As a result we have alreadyensured that key role players areengaged, processes are put in place andpositive results are attainable by:1. Rolling out the ‘back to schoolcampaign’ which will be launched nextyear in January.2. Meeting with various FETs,Universities and other privateinstitutions in addressing issuesrelated to access.3. Meeting Government departments, parastatals and the Private sector toaddress issues relating to bursaries andthe need for the less privileged toreceive assistance.“We call upon learners to preparecomprehensively and ensure that theydo final touch ups with their educatorsand study mates. We remain confidentthat despite few hiccups during theyear the class of 2010 is going to makeus proud. We say so because thedepartment of education, parents andteachers have worked hard in ensuringthat current learner generationbecomes ready for the end of the yearexaminations”.

Bauba Platinum has big plansBauba Platinum recently listed on the JSE and has big plans for the futurewe. Bauba Platinum was createdthrough the reverse listing of a 60% interest in Bauba A Hlabirwa Mining Investments (the Bauba Project). The listing marked a key milestone in the transformation of the company.Bauba’s immediate business objective is the exploration, evaluation and development of the Bauba Project, ahigh quality Platinum Group Metals (PGMs) resource base located on the Eastern Limb of the BushveldComplex, in the heart of the world’s best-known platinum neighbourhood. The project, which extends overapproximately 12,700 hectares, is strategically located down-dip from Modikwa and Marula platinum mines. In order to give full effect to the development of the business imperative offered by the Bauba Project, thecompany has realigned itself to optimise shareholder value, which included listing on the Main Board of theJSE, a change in name (to Bauba Platinum Limited) to reflect the core business and a reconstituted Board ofDirectors. An introductory capital raising earlier in the year was completed and the proceeds are funding the initialexploration drilling programme and scoping study, as well as the working capital. The exploration programme, which began in April this year, will determine the nature and extent of the PGMmineralisation.Initial drill results have exceeded expectations, with the first two boreholes successfully intersecting theMerensky Reef and confirming the anticipated mineralisation. These results provide a solid base from whichthe company can, with confidence, accelerate the drilling programmeand evaluations.Bauba CEO, Pine Pienaar isconfident that the platinum marketis poised for growth and investmentover the next five years and expectsBauba to be well-positioned to takeadvantage of such. “I am extremelyhappy to be associated with a PGMproject with such potential. I amconfident that with such anexceptionally experienced team,Board and management in place wewill successfully manage the BaubaProject from a brownfieldexploration project to an operatingmine,” said Pienaar. The Bapedi Nation has a directparticipation of 40% in the BaubaProject. YOUTH

Are you married? Any kids perhaps?

“No, not married. I have a little boy called Nthati”.

What is your life beyond the office? What do you get upto?

“It depends. I often attend government functions, weddingsor parties, but when I am at home I like to watch TV, listen tomusic and read the newspapers and political material”.

Where is home and what is your favourite food?

“Home is both in Polokwane and the village of my birth. I willalways return to Ga-Tisane when I can. Morogo is myfavourite”.

Your names?

“Frans Moswane, but my close friends call me ‘Hero’”.

Where were you born?

“Ga-Tisane near Jane Furse”.

What are you currently doing employment wise?

“I am the caretaker/chairperson of the Youth Commissionin Limpopo”.

How did you become a commissioner (chairperson)?

“I was previously involved in the Youth Council anddecided to apply for the position of Youth Commissionerwhen the opportunity arose. I was previously the secretaryof the Youth Council in Sekhukhune. I was started workingas the chairman of the Youth Commission in August 2010”.

What does your job entail?

“The design of programmes that seeks to improve the life ofour people. I help to mobilize them and ensure that theyparticipate in the programmes available for young people. Atthe end of this month we will be having a Youth EconomicSummit. Through events such as this we empower youngbusiness people with skills and knowledge to succeed asentrepreneurs. We also encourage them to not only target theso-called ‘soft jobs’ or to aim at becoming tenderpreneurs. There are opportunities available in various sections ofeconomy, agriculture for example. Unfortunately many youngpeople do are not willing to put in the hard work farmingrequires, but we need to address the food security challengesin the province”.

Tell us about your political activities before you to the YouthCommission.

“In short I started off as an ordinary member of COSAS. I waselected by the former president of the SRC at the UNIVEN Giyanicampus and is a former BEC member of SASCO at WitsUniversity. I am a former secretary of the ANC Youth League inSekhukhune and is the current chairperson of the ANC YouthLeague in Limpopo”.

What is your advice to young people who aspire to become achairperson like you?

“Young people must involve themselves in politics from an earlyage. Participate actively without expectation of reward. Involveyourself because you want to make a difference, not because youwant to become a chairperson. Put more effort into whatever jobyou are given. Excel where you are, with whatever responsibilityyou are given. Display commitment and put all your energy into it”.

How can young people reach your office for assistance?

“They can call 015-287 6632 or visit their local Municipality andspeak to the Youth Officers there. The Youth Officers will link themup with us”.

What is your view about young people who are not active inpolitics?

“They are missing an opportunity to understand society and theeconomy. An opportunity to change the bad to good. Changing thelives of people from bad to good”.

What does the Youth Commission do?

“I give the overall political direction to the Youth Commission. Our programmes are directed at the Youth and young people. We try to address the challenges such as skills shortages. Weand myself actively try to mobilise our partners in the privatesector to support the programmes we initiate to help youngpeople”.

Is the Youth Commission the same as the NYDA?

“No, it is not. The NYDA is bringing together the programmesaddressing skills and knowledge with the funding that ischannelled through the Umsombovu Youth Fund. The NYDAensures integrated development while the Youth Commissionassist in applications for funding and special programmes forskills and education”.

Passionate about developmentMeeting the man with no time to sit around and wait for others to do the job. The newlyappointed Youth Commissioner is not only passionate about politics, but also aboutbringing the youth opportunities. Raised in Sekhukhune he understands the challengesyoung people in the area face. He spoke to us about his career, passions and vision...

What is the Youth Commission doing to ensure that youngpeople from minority groups and other youth organisationsparticipate in the Youth Commission activities?

“Generally our programmes are open to everyone. We includeminority groups and function as one. We try to encourage andmobilize the minority groups to make use of opportunities giventhrough the Youth Commission”.

What is the difference between the chairperson and the CEOat the Youth Commission?

“The chairperson is the political head while the CEO is theadministrative head”.

Who is the CEO?

“Khomutso Malatjie”.

Limpopo

Commission

What are you currently reading?

“I am reading a book by Martin Meredithcalled ‘The State of Africa’”.

Any message to young people?

“Let us work hard to build a better South Africa.Whatever opportunities we come across, we mustseize. We must develop our areas ourselves and notwait for other people to come and do it. The youngpeople are the future. Make sure that you get a goodeducation and acquire the skills to help develop thiscountry. Good luck to all the learners and studentswith their upcoming examinations!”

What will unify us in theThe Department of Arts and Culture istrying to find a solution to the challenge ofunified national day celebrations. This week, Mr Phakamani Mthembu, director of living heritage at theDepartment of Arts and Culture toldParliament’s arts and culture portfoliocommittee that they are trying to bringpeople together for celebrations of nationaldays. “People in other countries celebratetogether. We know we come from a pastwhere we were not taught to celebratetogether” he said.In March this year President Jacob Zumaasked the department to review the publicholidays. The session with the committeeon Tuesday was part of the feedback onthis review and also included a review ofname changes of towns and cities. The presidency has expressed concern atthe lack of interest from all race groupswhen rallies in celebration of e.g. FreedomDay are organised.Mthembu also said that people shouldstick to calling the national days what theyofficially are and not call Heritage Day‘Braai Day’. He labeled this as unpatriotic.“If people like to braai, maybe they shouldcontinue to braai, but call it Heritage Day,”he said. One of the plans that has been suggestedto help with bringing all races tocelebrations is to move away from thepolitical style rallies and rather make useof an education-related commemoration. Itwas also noted that the celebrations shouldbe brought to the people so that they won’thave to travel very far to attend theevents.Another possible change is to include theleaders of all the political parties at majorrallies. The Department hopes that whenthese parties’ leaders share the podiumwith the president at major rallies, abroader base of support will be mustered. We asked our readers what they thinkabout this issue and what they feel mustbe done to unify South Africans whencelebrating national days?

Mr Kgaogelo Mathonsi said: “They mustdo something that everyone will like onthese days. They must not seperatepeople by including only one culture, language or race”.

Mr Riaz Abdullah and Mr Faizal Abdullah said: “In celebrating holidays they mustrecognise all cultures and beliefs. They should include different cultural themes in theprogrammes so that everyone is included”.

Mr Sipho Mnisi said: “Race is the problemwith these days and celebrations. Theymust include all the races in theprogrammes of events so that they canlearn each other’s languages andcultures”.

Ms Kamogelo Tjie said: “They must lookat the time they always start these things. They must start on time”.

Mnr Terrence Roberts sê: “Daar moetgeen alkohol by sulke feesvieringe weesnie. Mense baklei as hulle gedrink het endit is ‘n probleem met waneer daar danwit en swart mense saam is”.

Ms Precious Makine, Mr Sam Mokwena and Ms Magdeline Sekgobela said: “English!English is the answer. Indians, Coloureds, Whites and Blacks all speak English. Theyalso have to organise the events in town. If they have it far off in the rural areas it is asif they are having it only for Blacks”.

Mr Kuziva Nyamurowa and his brother, Mr Kuda Nyamurowa said: “They must start theevents on time. If they advertise it for 10:00 they must start at 10:00. For some of ustime is important. Time is money. They must also include artists from all the culturesat the events when they plan the entertainment”.

celebration of public holidays?

Mnr. Vaughn Craffert en me. Charmagne Wolmarans sê: “Taal. Ons sal dit oorweeg omte gaan as ons dit kan verstaan. Dit sal lekker wees om nuwe mense te ontmoet”.

Ms Michelle Mangena said: “They mustmake sure that the adverts reach Whitesas well. The language is also a problem.People feel out of place if they don’tunderstand what is being said. They mustchange people’s attitudes to get it beinclusive for everyone”.

Mr Thabiso Kgolane said: “The problem isthat they still require the race part on jobapplications and CV’s. They must takethat away otherwise the separation willnever end. When they plan thosecelebrations they must have it in differentareas to accommodate everyone. Lastyear for example Heritage Day wascelebrated in Burgersfort and there weremainly black people. Next year theyshould take it to Lydenburg to a mainly‘white’ area. They should also organisetransport for everyone - black and white.Government should also stop organisingevents to celebrate ‘what we’ve foughtfor’. We’ve already celebrated that and ithad it’s place. We should now rathercelebrate unity now and what we areachieving now, then we’ll come to a stagesimilar to America where everyone isequal”.

Left: Ms Tebogo Mooi and Ms Violet Maile said: “They mustspeak English at the events and not Sepedi or any otherlanguage. English is the only language we all know”.

Mnr. Albert en me. Joey George sê: “Ons sal graag goedbywoon, maar die kultuur en taal-ding is ‘n probleem. Menseverstaan nie die boodskap nie”.

Ms. Suzen Selepe said: “They shouldinvolve everyone when national days arecelebrated. It should be celebrated inschools, at stadiums and in all the ruralareas. At the big events they should haveinterpreters to accommodate everyone. Itmust not be ‘for blacks only’ or ‘whitesonly’.

Mnr James Letebele sê: “Tale is dienommer een probleem. Hulle moet dat diemense die goed in hul eie taal hoor. Hullemoet ook goed vir almal se kultuur insluit.Hulle moet ook adverteer van wat waargebeur sodat al die rasse daarvan kanweet en nie net bv. swart of net wit mensenie”.

Me. O’Dilhea Keulder sê: “Hulle moeteenheid onder mense kry en goed op hulprogramme sit wat by almal sal aanklankvind. Hulle moet almal se geskiedenisrespekteer”.

Ms Frida Maphalla said: “They must gettranslators then the white people will allbe coming to the events. It will be allencompassing. It will help to do away withracial prejudice . Language is a bigproblem”.

Ms Suzan Mahapa and Ms Kholofelo Monakedi said: “They mustspeak all the languages. The artists are also important. If there issomething for everyone, we will not be bored”.

“Languageis the

The African National Congress Youth League -launched its campaign on the Nationalisation ofMines at Mandaagshoek, it has not nationalisedthe Mines.

The launch marked the epoch of debates, discussions, public lectures, and research etc.towards nationalisation. .Federations , certainunions, academics and armchair critics havejoined the chorus of singing the song thatnationalisation has failed elsewhere in the worldand the same will happen in South Africa. Theyfurther went on to launch vicious and politicalpolemics against the president of the AfricanNational Congn!ss Youth League and claim thatthere will be massive looting of Mines bypoliticicains as well as non-accountability.

Critics must not compare the incomparable.Yes, it might have failed elsewhere in the world. That it’s elsewhere dictated by materialconditions, but not in South Africa.

During Codesa warlords, political cohortsand charlatans attacked the ANC, accusing it ofselling the out the masses and that nowhere inthe world power was handed over through talks. It happened and now South Africa have the bestConstitution and is the best democratic state inthe world.

When government and soccer bodieslaunched the World Cup bid, the same charlatansargued that South Africa does not have thecapacity to host a tournament of that magnitude.

They were wrong, we hosted the best World Cupever.

Government (through Limdev) and ASAMetals – (Dilokong mine and smelter) is anexample of the shape, form and the content ofthe contemplated nationalisation. The question iswhether there has being wholesale and massivelooting of resources by politicians at that venturefor the past decades? Was there chaos and lackof accountability on part of the governmentdeployees7 Has that nationalised mine failed?

Socialism is the future. Govemmentprogrammes that are biased towards socialismsuch as free health systems, free schooling, school feeding programmes, national healthinsurance, free housing are part of process ofbuilding socialism, therefore the nationalisationof mines will serve as one step ahead in buildingsocialism.

Political polemics aimed at the president offthe African National Congress Youth league bythe National Union of Mine Workers inparticular, is uncalled for and unscrupulous. Theunion must focus on addressing plight of theproletariat. It will be appropriate for the parties, federations, and critics to engage the documentof the ANCYL and come up with alternatives, ifany.

Tshii- Mankgaleraga -Makofane (strydom)from Maruleng

Nationalisation - a step ahead

(The letter was edited and shortened. It needs to be pointed out that in ASA Metals’ case,Limdev owns only 40 percent of the company, with Sinosteel having the rest of the shares. Lastheard Limdev was planning to sell its 40 percent to a BEE company...The model proposed in the letter does not amount to nationalisation. As mining company DeBeers has pointed out this week, its 50 / 50 joint ventures with the governments of Botswana(Debswana) and Namibia (Namdeb) are not nationalisation, but to be seen as partnerships.Nationalisation entails 100 percent state ownership and control. It becomes even more confusingas Sinosteel is a Chinese State Corporation. Has China nationalised a South African mine onour doorstep? Or are they moving towards a freer economy? Remember in the Chinese modelit is a worker state with no unions and no minimum wages, while there is also a much tighterreign on their politicians to prevent them from putting their hands into the cookie jar - Editor).
