Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe toldmore than 18 000 people at NtwampeStadium, Moroke, last week on HeritageDay that arts and culture is part andparcel of the country’s heritage and thatpeople should not only be proud of theirheritage, but that they should use it foreconomic means.

The Deputy President said whenpeople celebrate South African craft, theyare, in actual fact, celebrating thousandsof years of broader context of art asreflected in the Khoisan arts, amongothers and in a way on Heritage Dayresonates with this remarkable history ofthe arts, a day which also reflects therecent past and dynamic present.

He said since crafts are an aspect ofculture, we are in a way celebrating ourculture as South Africans, a culturesteeped in our collective experiences andpeculiar conditions that imbue us with ourcharacter as a people, as a nation, sayingthe fact that we are celebrating this day isin itself a symbolic expression of how farwe have come in our history.

Mr Motlanthe said this year’s theme“Celebrating South African Craft, OurHeritage”, calls upon people to focus theirattention on the richness of South Africa’scultural heritage while mindful of howarts and crafts can be maximised toimprove livelihoods.

For that reason government fullyendorses and supports the strategicobjectives of Heritage Day celebrationswhich include to:a. showcase the contribution of craftsto economic development of SouthAfrica

b. promote the use of indigenousknowledge to design and produce

c. create an environment for thepromotion of South Africa’s culturalexpressions in South Africa andinternationally

d. demonstrate the potential and roleof crafts in creating jobs, alleviatingpoverty and forging of a nationalidentity

e. forge cohesion among crafters andother stakeholders

f. showcase unique South Africancrafts products in preparation for2010 and beyond.

He said the basic principle implied inUbuntu/Botho urges people to becompassionate to those without food andto be kind to the elderly and infirm.Indigenous cultures are tools we can useto heal our broken spirit as a nation andbring back social stability that isthreatened by crime, violence againstwomen and children and xenophobictendencies. I

He called on people to organisethemselves and creatively use the craftskills as a measure for self-employment orenterprise development in an effort tocounter the job losses under the currenteconomic situation.

Among others, this response seeks toprotect the poor, the unemployed and low-income earners from the effects of therecession.

From adistance...It seems as if construction ofthe De Hoop Dam is goingaccording to plan.Since the re-alignment of theR555 route to Roossenekaland Stofberg from Steelpoorthas been completed,motorists can no longer seewhat is going on at theconstruction of the dam wall,which will eventually be

more than 80 metres high. Asfar as could be figured out fromthe artists impressions of thedam wall, it will be about ashigh as the service road in thethe left of the photograph.The crane in the picture wasspecially imported for the job ofconstructing the dam wall andstill has lots of concrete to liftbefore the project’s completion.

The contractor is hard at work to complete the new tarred road between Ga-Malekane and Tukakgomo. Thephotograph was taken next to the steel bridge (inset) over the river at the Jane Furse turn-off from the R555.The new road will enhance the accessability of the area to a great extent and alleviate congestion on theexciting road from the steel bridge to Steelpoort.

Letago Makola (5) was crowned the Miss Tiny Africa ‘09 Miss Photogenic lastweekend. The competition hosted by Pageants SA took place at the Unice LittleTheatre in Pretoria and stretched from 23 to 26 September. Beauties from all overAfrica competeted for the titles of Miss, Miss Tiny, Mr, Mrs and Sir Africa ‘09.Letago takes modeling classes at Modeling & Finishing Inc. in Burgersfort.She says: “Mommy you believed in me, attended my function, encouraged me,supported me and helped me to do my best. I hope I made you proud and I love youdearly. Thank you. Thank you to auntie Magda from my modeling school for the helpand support”. Mr Fani Rethore said: “For the police towork better they must have more rightsthan what the criminals have. They mustgive authority to the police. They shouldchange the constitution to protect thepolice and not the criminals”.

Mr Aron Tswane said: “It is right. Thepercentage crime is very high. They mustshoot the criminals - it will be right. Theymust give us more police officers andthey must also be around in the evening”.

“If the police is in danger they must shootto protect themselves and the community.South Africa must adopt the law likeBotswana where they have the deathpenalty,” said Mr Ratshoshi Sekepe.

On Tuesday president Jacob Zuma metwith station commissioners of the SAPS todiscuss better service delivery in terms offighting crime.“We had changed the name of the Ministryfrom Safety and Security to Police, inorder to emphasise that we wanted realoperational energy in police work. Thisenergy should see us reduce serious andviolent crimes by the set target of 7% to10% per annum. We said that our aim wasto establish a transformed, integrated,modernised, properly resourced and wellmanaged criminal justice system,” Zumatold the station commissioners which hesaid he preferred to call stationcommanders.“As you are aware, we seek to strengthenthe hand of the police in dealing withviolent criminals. We intend to finaliseamendments to Section 49 of the CriminalProcedure Act, with a view to taking theamendments to Parliament soon.This is a measure aimed specifically atdealing with serious violent crime anddangerous criminals. It is the duty of thepolice to protect all people against injuryor loss of life. But when their lives or thelives of innocent civilians are threatened,police sometimes have no choice but to uselethal force to defend themselves andothers,” he added.He however warned that this measuremust not be seen as an encouragement tocultivate a culture of ‘trigger-happy policeofficers’.“We expect our police officers to observethe law and respect the rights of innocentcitizens, at all times. Alongside theproposed amendment to Section 49, we arealso in the process of strengthening theIndependent Complaints Directorate(ICD)”.He said that should a police station beidentified as a high crime incidence areaand recources allocated to it, failure toachieve set targets should result in actionbeing taken against its management.“In building the new culture of hard workand commitment, we urge you to manage,lead and command your stations in amanner that eradicates all negativeinfluences that will make it impossible todefeat crime. Absenteeism, laziness andtardiness in the discharge of duties mustbe a thing of the past. We must alsoseriously eradicate corruption within thepolice force. The legendary loss of dockets,leading to botched cases, should end” hesaid.During the day’s session between thepoliticians and the SAPS the possibility torestructure the rank structure of policepersonnel within the service was alsodiscussed.This week we asked readers what theythink about the suggested changes andwhat suggestions they might have toimprove the SAPS.

Photographs taken at a match between Maatlopo and Mooihoek XIExperience at the end of August.

Maatlopo United FC played against Makgalanoto Young Chiefs in another round of theNedbank Cup last week Sunday.The Young Chiefs team represented the Fetakogomo Municipal area. During the first halfboth teams were evenly matched and by half time the score board was still empty.This trend continued during the second half of the match until Taripo Nkosi managed tobreak through and score a goal. This was in the 88th minute of the game. For this he wasawarded the Man of the Match title.The team will now continue to play against teams from other districts to determine theprovincial winners that will go through to the national round.On 3 October they will play against Material Black Chiefs at Malope-ga Masemola and on4 October they will take on the Sekhukhune Celtics at Moroke Stadium.
