China says helloThe Ambassador Extraordinary and

Plenipotentiary of the People’sRepublic of China to the Republic of

South Africa, Mr Zhong Jianhua and his wifeMs Lu Qingjiang, visited the Tubatse area onTuesday.

Platinum Gazette caught up withAmbassador Zhong and his party at TubatseChrome in Steelpoort, where they were engagedin an information session with management.After the meeting the party took a bus tour ofthe plant. Ambassador Zhong told thenewspaper that as the custodian of the interestsof the People’s Republic of China in SouthAfrica, he takes an interest in the activitiesChinese companies in the country. He visitedthe area to gain first hand knowledge about thewell being of the Chinese companies and theirinterests in our area.

Earlier the day Ambassador Zhong and hisparty visited ASA Metals at Dilokong where anew pelletising and sintering plant has beencommissioned recently and where a new smelteris all but on the bring of production. Sinosteel,a Chinese steel conglomerate mainly controlledby the state, has a 60 percent stake in ASAMetals, the other 40 percent is held by Limdev(Limpopo development Corporation).

Tubatse Chrome is a joint venture betweenSamancor Chrome and Sinosteel, with eachpartner having 50 percent in the plant atSteelpoort and Tweefontein Mine.

ASA Metals’ new smelter at Dilokong started showing life this week. The new smelter is part of an extensive expansion programme at Dilokong and is anaddition to the old smelter on the right, which is somewhat dwarfed by the new facility. This facility was also visited by the Ambassador of the People’sRepublic of China to South Africa, Mr Zhong Jianhua, on Tuesday when he visited the area. A new pelletising and sintering plant is already in production atDilokong.

Greater Sekhukhune District Municipality (GSDM) has launched the first IntegratedDevelopment Plan (IDP) document in Braille to enable blind people to read andunderstand government’s plans for their communities.

The district decided to transcribe the 2009/10 IDP document into Braille afterreceiving complaints from people with eyesight impairments during IDP consultationsthat they could not understand government’s project plans.

GSDM Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) responsible for the Planning andLocal Economic Development (LED) department, Joe Motene said during the launch onThursday that the IDP document was only the beginning of a process to ensure thatpeople with disabilities have access to information and able to participate ingovernment’s planning programmes.

“Other documents will also have to be translated into Braille. We will send thesedocuments to our five local municipalities (Elias Motsoaledi, Marble Hall, Fetakgomo,Tubatse and Makhuduthamaga) because they all have operational Disability Forums,”Motene said. The district has produced 20 copies of the 2010/11 IDP document inBraille, and the purpose is to produce more and distribute them to various centres.

Rabies awarenesscampaign a hugesuccess

A rabies awareness day in Kgautswane, whichwas presented gby the department of Agricultureand the department of Health in Tubatse, wasvery well attended. People gathered at the tribaloffices.

Close to 200 people squeezed into the smallhall at the tribal offices (photograph right)andofficials of the two departments had to be seatedin adjacent room because of the space problem(bottom photograph).

The information session about rabies inanimals was presented by the state veterinarianfor Tubatse and Fetakogomo, Dr FlorenceMakgamata, while rabies in humans wascarefully explained by Mr M S Marobane of thedepartment of Health and Social Services.

The information session was follwed by aquestion and answer session when the communityhad the opportunity to ask anything about thedisease they were still uncertain of.

The campaign was closed by a demonstrationof dogs getting vaccinated against rabies andmembers of the community were also offered theopportunity to have their dogs vaccinated.

On 21 August 2009 Thorburn Security Solutions security officers received certificatesand rewards for excellent service performed at Mototolo JV Concentrator Plant and theAngloplat Der Brochen Project in the Eastern Limb.

A rewards function was held at the Tubatse Chrome Club where various certificatesfor service excellence, training, attendance and exceptional work performance werepresented to the Thorburn staff. The training certificates included certificates for thevery important aspects of Workplace Safety and Risk Identification and Human Rights.

In his address Thorburn Managing Director, Dolf Scheepers, confirmed theimportance of the reward system in the company and the loyalty it creates as well as itscontribution to continuously improve on service delivery. “The quarterly reward systemwhich is the norm in the Eastern Limb was recently held at Modikwa Platinum as well.It is our way of saying thank you to our staff in a formal manner. This is in addition toour special loss prevention bonus system payable for individual success and in additionto our monthly performance bonus added to our wages. We are proud to pay our peoplewhat they deserve. Recently we saw various successes which ranges from arrests andpreventions at Modikwa, a copper cable loss prevention at ASA Metals and arrests atVanchem Vanadium Products in Witbank”, Scheepers added.

The Thorburn staff was honoured with the presence of Mr William van Rensburg(Protection Services Supervisor at the Angloplat Mototolo JV Concentrator Plant) andCornel du Plessis, the Angloplat Der Brochen Project Land Manager who afterwardsjoined the staff for lunch at Tubatse Chrome Club.

Mrs Bafodile Mopane was born in Mokutung village more than acentury ago and is still, living there. Mrs Mopane still enjoys goodhealth and she can still walk, see, hear and eat, living a quiet life atthe foot of the mountain.

Speaking to Platinum Gazette this week in the company of one ofher daughters and a grandson, she says she is happy and that shebelieved all her life not to harm other people. She had eight children,five sons and three daughters. Six of her children has passed awayand now only two daughters are left. She is not doing much thesedays, but still enjoys healthy meals, such as fruit and fruit juice.When she does not feel to well her family or friends see to it that shegets medical attention, “but it does not happen regularly” says hergrandson, Mr Immanuel Mopane, who is the village headman. Shealso loves ice cream and listens to the radio every now and then.

Her grandson says she has friends who come and visit her and sheand an even older man used to visit each other regularly“unfortunately he does not have proof of his age”. Now “they do nothave the legs to walk to each other”.

Mrs Mopane said she longs for the days when the people ofMokutung still singed and danced traditional dances down in thevalley ....

‘I want to draw’19 year old Kenneth Mahlake isa learner at Kgaola High Schoolat Mokutung, and he proudlydisplayed his drawings toPlatinum Gazette when thenewspaper visited the area thisweek.

Kenneth, an orphan whostays with relatives, believes hehas a talent for art and he hopesto get an opportunity to make aliving from art or a related fieldsuch as signwriting when heleaves school at the end of grade12 this year.

Kenneth says he alwaysliked to draw things, since hewas a small boy, and he enjoysdrawing a range of subjects,ranging from politicians, carsand girls.

Mr Raymond Ngwatle said: “They mustfirst bring electricity. Then we will be ableto start our own mining projects”.

“They must bring electricity first and withit the people can create their own jobs.They must also look at the cellphonenetwork reception. People must be ableto communicate to get jobs,” said MrGodfrey Khoza and Mr Dennis Masete.

Ms. MN Mmangena said: “They mustcollect the tile-stones in the mountainand sell it. We must however first gettransport and electricity”.

Ms Luzbeth Komane said: “There arebeautiful flat stones in our mountain.They can arrange a factory to sell thestones as paving. They can maybe look atthe roads so that they can bring businessto this side”.

Ms Lydia Sithole said: “They can makeprojects like bringing electricity. Thepeople will earn something during theproject”.

Comeback kings!Maatlapo United FC played their SAFASAB Regional league game againstMooihoek XI Experience on Saturday 29August.Maatlapo United (in the white and red)made an impressive comeback during thesecond half of the game to triumph overthe home team, Mooihoek XI Experience.The game started off with both teamsturning on the pressure while they werefresh. Maatlapo United missed goldenopportunities to score, especially during

the first half. Discipline unravelled withinthe teams and various yellow cards wereawarded during the match.The first goal of the match was scored bythe captain of Mooihoek XI Experience inthe 18th minute of the game.During the 42nd minute Maatlapo missedout on a free kick and at half time the scorewas still 1-0 in favour of Mooihoek XIExperience.Early in the second half, the Mooihoekteam scored again when they took

advantage of a loose ball. This onlystrengthened the Maatlopo United team’sefforts and they finally found the back ofthe net via the boot of Billy, player number11.As time started running out, Maatlaposcored again to even the score. ThapeloMoropane from Maatlapo United turnedout to be the hero of the match after hescored a second goal to give the team a win.He was named the man of the match.This weekend Maatlapo United will be

playing against Sekhukhune Celtic fromNebo.
