Oh no VW!

As if the woes of the local mining industry are not enough, analysts are of the opinion that the price of platinum, widely used in diesel car engines, could fall below $900 a troy ounce for the fi rst time since the fi nancial crisis in the wake of the emissions scandal at Volkswagen AG.

6 NEWS 25 SEPTEMBER 2015

Yesterday, 24 September South Africans cel-ebrated Heritage Day with a public holiday. This day is aimed at bringing South Africans together in celebrating the diversity of one country. Everyone is encouraged to celebrate their culture, beliefs and traditions in a wider context. This forms part of the country’s ‘living heritage’ as government describes it. It includes cultural tradition, oral history, per-formance, ritual, popular memory, skills and techniques, indigenous knowledge system and the holistic approach to nature, society and social relationships. This plays an impor-tant role in promoting cultural diversity, social cohesion, reconciliation, peace and econom-ic development. In every community there are living human treasures that possess a high degree of knowledge, skills and history pertaining to different aspects of diverse liv-ing heritage. That is why South Africans are encouraged to reclaim, restore and preserve these aspects of living heritage and use it in a way that can help address the challenges communities are facing. This weekend the Sekhukhune District Municipality will be hosting various heritage celebrations (see the advertisement on page 5) and all residents of the area are invited to come together in celebrating local cultural diversity. National Braai Day also coincides with Heritage Day. This day was initiated to bring South Africans together around one activity that everyone enjoys regardless of race, culture or tradition. Platinum Gazette asked readers what they plan to do on Heritage Day and weekend.

Mnr. Ruphus Komana sê: “Ek gaan hierdie naweek bid by my kerk se conference. Dis die hele naweek aan”.

Me. Samantha Kriel sê: “Ek gaan braai, Vry-dag weer werk en Saterdag dan kyk ons rug-by met ‘n dop en tjop so dan braai ons weer. Ek sal Erfenisdag met ‘n braai herdenk”.

Mr. Michael Magane said: “It is a very impor-tant day. There are gatherings where people from all races come and share their culture. I’ll be at the Ga-Malekane event for the mu-nicipal heritage event. Our Catholic Church in Steelpoort is also planning a cultural day to raise funds. We’ll cook different foods and dress up in different cultures’ clothes. We’ve also invited the Portuguese people to join us”.

Left: Ms. Dudu Mas-wathupe said: “I did not plan anything to be honest, but I’ll remem-ber what it is all about on Heritage Day”.

Mr. Elvis Tebele Madonsela said: “I’m going to do traditional stuff on Heritage Day. We have to remember our roots and where we come from. I know how to make drums with the skin of a cow. That instrument is called a kiba. I’ll be playing the kiba with my friends at home”.

Mr. Casper Thobejane said: “I’m going to perform my cultural styles at Maritse near Strydom Tunnel. We’ve discussed making traditional food as well. We’ll make marotse. It is a vegetable. We make a porridge from it and that is called kgodu”. Ms. Merriam Kgaphola said: “I’m going to

wear traditional dresses, play indigenous games, dance traditional dances and share some ideas about our culture. I will also be cooking traditional meals”.

Ms. Pinky Nkune said: “I’ll cook traditional food like porridge of mabele, marogo and mala mogodu. I have to work, so I’ll cook after work”. With her are Ms. Lesther Phelane and Norah.

Mr. Casius Nkune and Ms. Idah Nkune said: “We are going to a wedding in Pretoria. We will be celebrating Heritage Day there with the family” .

Mr. Ben Moshwane said: “On 24 September it is my birthday, so I’ll visit my mother fi rst to make sure she is fi ne and to thank her for bringing me here. After that I’ll go to the Tjate Heritage site where our forefather king was buried. We will dance, sing and celebrate our herit-age. The young ones don’t know our heritage and we will teach them”.

Mr. Mafelegetse Napo said: “I haven’t planned to go anywhere. I’ll be with my family doing things that are cultural. ‘Our past is our heritage, the present our chal-lenge and the future is our responsibility’. This is what Fidel Castro said and I agree. I’ll be eating traditional food with family and just be relaxing at home”.

Mr. Amos Zitha said: “In cele-bration I would have liked to give a traditional present to my managers. I work at Pick n Pay and we love all our shoppers with every culture and heritage. That is why I would like to wish everyone a happy Heritage weekend”.

What will you do on Heritage weekend?

Sehlaku Techical High School in Driekop celebrated Heritage Day with a day full of cultural perforances and even a beauty competition. The new Mr. and Miss Sehlaku was also chosen. This was not an easy affair. Contestants did not only have to walk the stage, but also had to answer some socially relevant questions before a winner was chosen.

The choir perfomed and the programme also included poetry, tradi-tional dance, latin danc-ing, modelling, singing, hip hop, drama, comedy and a tranditional dance performance by the teachers. Kohin helped to host the day.

“Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead -- since he was about a hundred years old -- and that Sarah’s womb was also dead. Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strength-ened in his faith and gave glory to God, being fully persuad-ed that God had power to do what he had promised”. Romans 4:18-21 NIV

Recently, all Boxer stores launched the “Washin with the Stars” campaign whereby customers who purchase a 3kg Sunlight hand washing powder receives a FREE & exclusive to Boxer CD, while stocks last. The CD is a one of its kind and was created just for this campaign. Comprising of 12 number one hits, the ‘Box Hits Volume 1’ CD is truly a South African music lovers dream. Tracks include ‘Gugo’thandaya’ by the music legends Mafi kizolo and ‘Weekend Special’ by Brenda Fassie & The Big Dubes to name a few. The Box Hits Volume 1 CD is a limited offer and customers have been ad-vised t o be aware that it’s only available while stocks last.

Over and above this campaign Boxer launched a unique campaign titled “I Have a Dream”. Boxer customers are required to pur-chase any two of the four advertised Unilever products to be eligible for entry via a USSD platform. Entrants will be prompted to select 1 of the 5 possible dream situations. They could attend their Matric Dance with Heavy K, get Khaya Mthethwa to perform at their Church, go on a R10 000 shopping spree with Mafi kizolo’s Nhlanhla, receive an exclusive performance by Woza Africa for their Stokvel Group or ask for Winnie Mashaba to come to their Birthday Party.

Now those are some really special dreams and Boxer together with selected Unilever brands are making them possible. But that is not all; there is still a GRAND PRIZE for just 1 lucky

Boxer shopper - 2 x VIP Tickets to the South African Music Awards (SAMA) 2016. This price includes; fl ights for 2, to Johannesburg, accom-modation for 2 in a Hotel overnight as well as transport via limo from the airport to the Hotel and from the Hotel to the Awards Ceremony & back. This sounds like a VIP experience and it’s made possible by simply buying two selected products at a Boxer store.

As if that was not enough, another life change campaign was revealed – ‘Win a Dream Wedding’. Boxer shoppers are really in for a treat during the months of September, October and November. ‘Win a Dream Wedding’ will see customers purchasing 2 Vaseline, Ponds or Dawn products to enter the competition via USSD and stand a chance of winning their dream wedding worth R100 000. This price includes: Venue & Car Hire, Catering, Groom’s Attire, Brides Hair & Make Up, a Wedding cake, a Wedding Dress, Spending money, Bridesmaids’ dresses, one night Honeymoon suite, Videographer & Photographer. This is another practical way Boxer is giving back to their shoppers. Understanding the fi nancial implications a wedding can have, Boxer’s Win a Dream Wedding competition will defi nitely bring relief to a couple. However, the winning couple will need to have their wedding by March 2016 so only those serious about ‘tying the knot’ should enter.

Casual Day was celebrated at the beginning of September. This day is a fundraising day for people living with disabilities.

Some schools and organisations are however not helping this good cause, high-jacking the day for their own purpose.

Casual Day is a trademarked brand and while the National Council for Persons with Physical Disabilities in South Africa (NCP-PDSA) cannot do anything to those who use their brand unethically, they would like to make it known that they are aware of it and that these acts are defying the intended purpose.

The money annually raised with Casual Day goes to a range of worthy organisations to help improve the lifes of people living with disabilities.

Recently 17 wheelchairs were donated to children in Limpopo living with disabilities. This was done in partnership with Edcon and Engen.

“Wheelchairs are one of the most com-monly used assistive devices and it gives children with disabilities a sense of freedom

to engage in activities that abled bodied chil-dren participate in on a daily basis” said Ms. Therina Wentzel from NCPPDSA.

The wheelchairs donated are Madiba buggies, which are specialised wheelchairs and have been custom-fi tted to each child. They provide full body support suitable for children and young adults with intermediate to advanced seating needs.

Ms. Sandra Mohlabi Moyo, a parent of 15-year old Thabang who was one of the recipients said: “For the fi rst time in 15 years we are able to take Thabang to a soccer game. With the buggy we are able to move him around with ease. As a family we are so happy to be able to do this. Thank you to Engen, Edcon and the NCPPDSA for giving us this better quality of life”.

The funds from Casual day gets distrib-uted to many other worth organisations that helps to make diffi cult living conditions with disabilities better through specifi cally directed efforts and funds.

Next year, do the right thing and buy your sticker to support a worthy cause.
