2 NEWS 19 SEPTEMBER 2014
Blydepoort Canyon Resort and ConferenceCentre saw a large number of youthfulentrepreneurs from Sekhukhune Districtgather at the venue last week Thursday andFriday to launch the district branch of theLimpopo Youth Chamber of Commerce andIndustries.
From the start of the conference it wasclear that young entrepeneurs yearns to belistened to and to be supported bygovernment and industry. The president ofof the body in Limpopo, Mr Wesley Maringaexplained that the youth is a ticking timebomb and that future unemployment andpoverty cannot be fought if entrepreneurialyoung people are not helped to helpthemselves. Questions from entrepreneursto Mr Maringa also highlighted the fact thatyoung entrepreneurs are almost alwaysoverlooked when businesses like mininghouses are approached for a simple servicecontract. The example of providing supplieslike toilet paper to mine was used and thequestion was asked “how difficult can it befor a mine to buy toilet paper from a smallentrepreneur in his vicinity, rather than buy itit in bulk from a large service provider in acity far away?”
Meanwhile the government’s aid to smallentrepreneurs was stuck in red tape, andbecause it was centralised at one office ofthe National Youth Development Agency“they only give attention to our applicationsafter we have turned madalas and we getrejected on the grounds of age!”
After a number of speakers gave theirviews over the course of the two days, thefollowing declaration was accepted:
“We, the young entrepreneurs ofSekhukhune district, convened on the 11-12September 2014 at Blyde Canon ForeverResort under the theme “breaking newgrounds for youth entrepreneurship inSekhukhune. We discussed the state ofentrepreneurship, the state of SMMEcontractor development, contribution by themining houses in youth economicdevelopment and the role and impact of
district and local municipalities in economicdevelopment.
We declare that our constituenciesremain unemployed and therefore shalltransform them from being job seekers toemployers. We will roll out road shows andseminars to mobilize and encourage theyouth to tap into enterpreuniorship space. Allinstitutions meant to offer financial supportshould deal away with the red tapes.Provincial structures must be empoweredwith powers to take decision and be able tofinalize applications for funding, municipalities must integrate their youthprogrammes to address economicparticipation and development, municipal by-laws must respond to the economic needs ofyoung people, all state institution shouldrespond to youth accords on obligation ofprocurement activities.
All private institutions involved in miningactivities should trade 70% with the youth, they must produce a programme of skillstransfer and development, mining housesmust respond to the youth accordingaspects of locality.
Municipalities must accommodate thechamber in their LED strategic committees, during IDP deliberations the municipalitiesmust take on board young people, on itsprogramme of municipal procurement, 70%must be given to local young people, therefore youth desk, youth council andmunicipalities must do entrepreneurshipseminars. Municipalities must also rotatetheir data base; none should receive orders2 times in 3 monsths before all havereceived a turn.
At the end of the conference anexecutive committee for Sekhukhune Districtwas elected. They are Chairperson :Mosana Dipuo, Deputy Chairperson : MaotoThomane, Secretary : Ngele Themba,Deputy Secretary : Selatishi Jacob,Treasurer : Makola Desmond, AdditionalMember: Khunou Prinsloo, Senong Hunadi,Mashegwane Mavis, Madihlaba Daphneyand Mohlala Karabo.

Obey the rules andbe patient
Drivers in Burgersfort and Praktiseer are requested to obey the rules of the road and bepatient. This was the request from the Traffic Chief, Victor Lekwadu this week. Various roads arecurrently under construction and motorists are requested to obey the road rules. Wheretraffic lights are out of order they should be treated as four way stop streets. Some of the traffic lights had been out for months, but the municipality is in the processof having this fixed. The trouble with these are twofold as they are waiting forcomponents to be delivered so that the control boxes can be fixed. These were damagedduring protest marches earlier the year. “We appeal to the public not to damage publicproperty such as traffic lights when they protest about service delivery. Not only does itcost money to fix, but it can sometimes take months for the relevant parts to bedelivered”.The second part of the problem is the electricity supply to many of the lights. Eskom is inthe process of installing individual metering units for these lights so that the municipalitycan be billed for this. Only once this has been installed, the lights will have the power itneeds to work again.Drivers are requested to be vigilant on the roads - also in town. Areas such as the robotnear the taxi rank are high risk areas and drivers should lock their doors. Complaintsabout taxi drivers not obeying the road signs for the turning lane are proving difficult toaddress as there is no space to pull over culprits. The municipality is however in theprocess of negotiating for an alternative route for taxi drivers to use coming in and out oftown.Lekwadu invites the public to contact him personally should they have any trafficconcerns. He can be reached on 013 231 1000.

Theft is a big problem.Especially at the robot near the taxi rank atCastle Square. “Lock the doors and makesure that your possessions are out ofreach. We are also appealing to thecommunity to assist us when they seecrime happening there. If you seesomeone grabbing things from a vehicleand running away, apprehend him or herand call the police”.People should also not be caught bystories of magic and they should not trust

It may seem like an endless battle and a huge insurmountable problem, but the Greater Tubatse Municipality istrying to address the problem of waste through a programme called ‘Youth Jobs in Waste’.
The programme is funded the national Department of Environmental Affairs an this week the targetedKgautswane (Rietfontein) near Ohrigstad to make the community aware of how they can contribute towardsmanaging the dirt that is engulfing us.
The group started at the Kguatswane Thusong Service Centre where they addressed a number of people at theclinic.
Various speakers from the youth group, as well as the municipality’s representative informed their audienceabout the different types of waste and how to dispose of it. Members of the group made the audience aware of thedangers of medical waste such as bandages with body fluids on it and the steps they should take to dispose of itsafely. Likewise they were informed that organic waste could be used to make compost, while a lot of other wastesuch as glass and plastic can be recycled.
In this regard they introduced them to Mr Collen Mojela who is a young entrepreneur. He collects waste that canbe recycled from villages and people were encouraged to contact him in this regard. It was explained that dumpingall kinds of rubbish on open spaces and next to the roads is not the answer to too much waste and that the burningof waste also creates all kinds of problems.
As Kgautswane is home to a number of vulnerable heritage sites, the group left the clinic and cleaned up nearthese sites to set an example to the community with regards to waste management and littering.
