Mall no 3 breaks groundLeading JSE-listed company ResilientProperty Income Fund last week Thursdayofficially turned the first sod of what is tobecome Burgersfort Mall, next to theextension of the R555 to Steelpoort and theR37 to Polokwane.

with one big question, as we attended thesod turning ceremony of the Burgersfort Mallnext to the taxi rank just a couple of weeksago. The developers quickly telephonedaround as they were also not sure what wasgoing on. After a while they came up withthe answer that this will be BurgersfortRegional Mall. In their official press releaserecived by email after the fucntion, theofficial name remains Burgerfort Mall(maybe we are set for a brawl of the malls? - ed).

Whatever the case may be, thedevelopers are quite earnest about theregional aspect of the development, as it willbe the largest of the three current majorretail developments in town (the of courseare the other Burgersfort Mall next to the taxirank and the Tubatse Mall at Spekboom

River Estate on the other side of towntowards Lydenburg).The developers say this regional

shopping centre is scheduled to open inApril 2013. The first phase of thiscomprehensive centre will comprise some40 000 sqm, with expansion potential of upto 75 000 sqm. “Burgersfort Mall is to beanchored by Edgars, Game and Shopriteand will feature a well-balanced mix of SouthAfrica’s favourite retailers” reads the officialpress release. “For the first time qualityshopping in a first-rate environment will beavailable to Burgersfort residents in some 90stores. The mall will serve Burgersfort andsurrounds with top-notch shopping on alevel not previously experienced in theregion. Retail convenience and variety, high-quality finishes, stylish design, excellent

access and superb visibility are combined atBurgersfort Mall to create a shopping centrethat will be a real asset to its community, itsretailers and its owners”.

Resilient is one of the largest retailproperty investors in the Mpumalanga andLimpopo. Its investments include, amongstothers, shopping centres in Mussina,Tzaneen, Thohoyandou, Mokopane,

Burgersfort, Nelspruit and Polokwane.Resilient is also the major owner and co-developer of the recently opened Mall of theNorth shopping centre which is currently thelargest centre in the northern part of thecountry.

Johann Kriek, executive director ofResilient, said the site for Burgersfort Mallwas acquired in 2007 for the development ofa regional shopping centre after Burgersfortwas identified as one of the major growthnodes in the country. Public transportfacilities will also be provided for at thecentre and improvements to the surroundingroads will be an integrated part of thedevelopment. Kriek also said that thedevelopment of Burgersfort Mall hasreceived robust support from the localcouncil.

Leboeng celebratesold age and cultureThe aged in the Leboeng area (just before Strydom Tunnel en route from Ohrigstad) gatheredat the Thusong service centre on Wednesday under the auspices of the Department of SocialDevelopment. The purpose of the day was to celebrate their old age and to show youngpeople their heritage and customs. They also got important information from variousroleplayers to make their old age days better. Aspects that received attention were amongstother things, how to too stay healthy, and looking after their diets, as well as theirtrelationships with younger family members. The Police at Leboeng Police Station alsoinformed them about what to do if younger family members want to take their social pensions.According to the Police at Leboeng it is especially jobless children and grandchildren whoharrass old people for their money. On their side the old people feel defenceless and do notwant to report this harrassment for fear that their family members may go to jail. This problemwas extensively discussed.

Various cultural groups comprising ofthe aged entertained the large number ofold people at Wednesday’s gathering atLeboeng’s Thusong Service centre.Various aspects of old age receivedattention during the day’s proceedings.Afterwards the guests received a hearty

Fabulous Food and WineFair for Cansa

The Fabulous Food & Wine Fair took place on Fridayand Saturday last week. All the funds raised with the eventgoes towards Cansa.The Fair kicked-off with an evening filled with good foodwine and Mr Claude Moller as the guest speaker.

The menu included freshly baked bread with jam, freshhome made tagliatelle with an alfredo reduction, oxtail ina shiraz reduction, seasonal vegetables and pumpkinfritters. Old fashioned Cape Brandy pudding withcustard and deep roasted coffee.Moller related many stories and lessons duringhis turn in front of the audience, but essentiallygave them the following message to take home:

“Remember, somewhere there is a terminally ill cancer patientwho would give everything to have a week of your life”.On Saturday, food demonstrations took place as well as winetasting and stalls sold home made food, biscuits, jam andmuch more. An extended power interruption did not prevent

the crew from preparing delicious dishes and having lots offun with those eager for new taste experiences.Ms Elize Ballack thanked everyone who contributed towardsthe success of the event and plans to make this an annualevent so mark it on your calendar for 2012 as not to be missed.

Who is the Dalai Lama?The Dalai Lama has been the spiritual leader ofTibet since the 17th century.According to the religious belief, each DalaiLama is a reincarnation of the previous one.The current Dalai Lama is 76 years old and hisname is Tenzin Gyatso. He is the 14th DalaiLama. He has been identified as the next DalaiLama at the age of 3 and started acting in therole of Dalai Lama when he turned 15. He hasbeen in excile since his twenties as he tried toprevent the Chinese government to take overTibet.In 1989 he won the Nobel prize for peace andtravels the world for the advancement of peace,harmony and human understanding.

This week Archbishop (emeritus) DesmondTutu reacted with anger after his friend, theDalai Lama cancelled his visit to South Africafor the Archbishop’s 80th birthday on 7 October.By Tuesday this week the Dalai Lama have nothad surety that his visum would be approvedand cancelled the visit. He was due to attendthe birthday party, speak at universities andreceive the Mahatma Gandhi peace prize inDurban.Tutu on Tuesday warned the ANC saying thatleaders such as Egypt’s Hosni Mubarak andLibya’s Muammar Gaddafi came to a fall eventhough they had great support. “I am warningyou that one day we will start praying for thedownfall of the ANC government” he said. Helashed out that the South African governmentdid not support the Tibetans “who are beingviciously oppressed by the Chinese”.Cosatu stated that it is discrimination to refusethe Dalai Lama entrance to South Africa. TheDA, IFP and FF+ all released statementscondemning the fact that a visum was notgranted in time. The ANC spokesman MrJackson Mthembu said that the Archbishop’scomparison of the ANC to the leaders of Egyptand Lybia and the apartheid government is“unfortunate and misplaced”. They alsoconfirmed that the Dalai Lama was not refusedentrance into the country by the time hecancelled his visit.We asked readers what they think about thewhole issue.

Compulsory briefing session: 18 October 2011 at 10:00 at The Greater Tubatse Old MunicipalChambers in Burgersfort.

THE BID COMPRISES, AMONGST OTHERS, OF THE FOLLOWING WORKS:

· Construction of a 7m wide asphalt road, approximately 220m long with kerbing.· The relocation of traffic signals.· Construction of a walkway.· Construction of a 2 x 1.2m diameter pipe culvert in Madiba street.

EVALUATION AND ADJUDICATION CRITERIA:

Bids shall be evaluated and adjudicated in accordance with The Greater Tubatse Municipal Supply Chain Management Policy and in accordance with the Preferential Procurement Policy Framework

Act, Act No. 5 of 2000 and either Associated Supply Chain Management Regulations . The 90/ 10 points system will be used to evaluate and adjudicate the bids received on time.

CLOSING DATE AND OTHER CONDITIONS FOR THE BID:

1. Bid documents will be on sale as from 14 Oct 2011 till the closing date during office hours08h00 – 15h00. Contract documentation will not be available at the site inspection meeting.

2. All bids will close and be opened in public, on the 31 October 2011 at 12h00 . Bids must be fullypriced signed and sealed in an envelope and marked “ BURGERSFORT INTERNAL STREETSPHASE 4: NEW ROADS: MADIBA AND RIBA STREETS Mig/LP0887/R,ST/08/10 ”. Bids mustbe deposited into the Municipal Tender Box situated at the reception of the Greater TubatseMunicipality, lower ground, 1 Kastania street, Burgersfort, on or before 12h00 on the 31 October2011 . No faxed, e-mailed, telephonic or late bids will be accepted.

3. The Municipality is under no obligation whatsoever to appoint any bidder or reserve the right toappoint bidders individually and/or collectively to execute the contract and negotiate furtherconditions and requirement with the appointed service provider(s) prior to execution of the task.

4. In terms of the National Treasury’s Regulation, no bid will be considered from persons in serviceof the state.

5. Only tenderers who have a CIDB contractor grading of 3 CE / 2 CEPE or higher , are eligible tosubmit Bids.

6. Depending on the nature of the appointment and scope of works, if the bidder to be appointed isoutside the area of jurisdiction of the Greater Tubatse Municipality as its determined locality,that bidder shall be required to sub-contract at least 30% of the total scope of works to a locallySMME based contractor registered on the municipal database .

7. Bidders should regard their bids as unsuccessful should they have not heard anything within 90working days after the closing date of the bid.
