BACKGROUND

2 February 2016

BackgroundDStv implemented PIP in their PVR decoders for several years now, this research is focused on the implementation on the PIP feature by DStv and our competitors.

This report will give us an idea of if we were to remove the PIP feature if it would have a negative impact on our users.

The UX research team undertook analysis of the PIP feature available on other boxes such as Virgin Media’s TiVo, Foxtel’s iQ3 and Comcast Xfinity’s X1 and how these compare to what DStv’s Explora PVR.

Users can adjust the transparency of onscreen overlays.

Users have the option to have a PIP but by default it is not there. If they choose to have it, it would pop up on the bottom right corner.

SUGGESTED TEST

Page 15: PIP Competitor Analysis

We could conduct a UT with a prototype UI that doesn’t have a PIP but also offer an option to users to have a PIP if they want to. The UI of the prototype could have a transparent overlay with an option for users to customise their preferred level of transparency.

Those are the few things we could look at for now and maybe in the future we could explore other features too.

CONCLUSION

What we have observed from our competitors is that we could do away with the PIP feature and introduce a translucent overlay with any menu users want to browse. We can conduct tests to see if the removal of the PIP feature will have an impact in our uses’ experience while using our decoder.

And we also noticed that we’re a bit behind with some of the features that our competitors have introduced, such as a TV Guide that’s the same on every device including the decoder, suggestions while searching, personalization so the decoder can recommend programs and offering VoD services like Netflix through their decoders. We could also look into improving those fields too.
