ly to both the new owner and Cassiem on12 September 2012 by means of a simultane-ous transfer.A principal agent is required to have ob-

tained anNQ5 certificate as well as a Fideli-ty Fund Certificate, authorities confirm.Without these, a principal agent is fraud-

ulently selling property, according to theboard“Only licensed estate agents are supposed

to deal with real estate transactions be-tween a buyer and seller or landlord andtenant,” Campbell says. Unlicensed estateagents can be slapped with a fine of up toR25 000.A lack of knowledge and understanding

puts potential buyers at risk. Principal realestate agent Shereen Abrahams says the in-dustry is tainted by “dogged agents”, theseare agents who persist in making a sale tothe point of annoyance.“I encourage potential buyers and sellers

to familiarise themselves with the processof buying and selling a property through anestate agent before taking the plunge,” she

says. “Dogged agents will easily takeadvantage of people’s lack of knowl-edge.”Ask questions before signing off

your hard-earned money, Abrahamsencourages.“Make sure you are credit worthy.

Prequalify yourself at the bank toknow what you can buy for,” she ad-vises.“Look at what is on the market in

your price range and view a numberof properties to get to know the valueof houses on sale in the area you arepurchasing.“Also inspect for defects as renova-

tions and repairs are costly. Comparewhat you like on each property andfollow your instincts.”

In an attempt to buy a house, potentialbuyer Chantelle Rooi (41), says she uncov-ered a handful of “dodgy estate agents whoare in it just to make a quick buck”.“I had the money to buy a house in my

neighbourhood. I had been living with mymother and decided I was ready to makethat move,” she says.But she was in for a shock when estate

agents drove her around the neighbour-hood to view potential homes from the win-dow of the car. “Theywould never allowmeto get out of the car and view the inside ofthe property. That is when I knew some-thing is wrong,” she says.This has wavered her trust in estate

agents. “You just don’t know whom totrust.”You may lodge a complaint in writing

dent-proof their homes. This includes re-moving piles of wood, refuse and othermaterial in the vicinity that can providea place for rats to breed, sealing off of allopenings around pipes, doors, windowsand holes or cracks in the floor as wellas repairing and sealing all openings on

the roof.”In addition, Van Minnen says resi-

dents can help to curb the rat problemby keeping their areas clean and dispos-ing of waste in bins and keeping thesebins closed. “Where waste is placed inlarge refuse skips, the waste must be inbags first. at a Vanguard Estate park after a spateof robberies were reported on the route.Residents living close to Rosa Park who

use the public open space as a shortcut toVangate Mall say they fear for their safetyfollowing a number of muggings aroundFerrous Street.As a result, lighting will be added to the

park to createmore visibility, especially forthose walking in the vicinity early in themorning and after dark.Vanguard Estate Neighbourhood Watch

chairperson Reuben Alie says the area isa hotspot for opportunistic criminals tar-geting residents and the additional lightingcomes as a great relief.“Many people are becoming victims of

petty thieves who steal handbags, cell-phones, grocery bags and any valuableitems pedestriansmay bewalkingwith,” hesays.“The path is frequently used by people

who are walking over the road to the shopand even children who use the shortcut to

get a taxi in the main road to go to school.”Ward councillor Anthony Moses says the

money for the lighting will from the wardallocation budget.“The Technical Assessment Unit have

worked out the design anddetails of thenewlighting. Once everything is finalised thelights should be implemented sometime af-ter June,” he says.“I have been made aware of similar prob-

lems in the area and have started installingadditional lighting at all parks.”Moses says additional lighting has al-

ready been installed at the Eendrag andThird Street parks.“The Ferrous Street lighting and the park

near Calcium Road are the only lightingthat still needs to be installed. The aim isto create more visibility so that robberiesand people smoking drugs in the parks canbe prevented.”Manenberg police spokesperson Lieuten-

ant Ian Bennett confirms the spike in mug-gings and that increased police visibility isbeing implemented to protect the resi-dents.“We have received a concerning amount

of reports from people who have beenrobbed at this specific spot. Most of these

incidents have occurred while it is stilldark, which is when children are on theirway to school in the morning or at nightwhen people are coming back from work orthe shops,” he says.“Residents are advised to refrain from

walking alone when no one is around andto be on the lookout for any suspicious-look-ing people.“We also urge residents not to walk with

Belgravia residents are demanding thataction be taken against speeding mo-torists disobeying traffic rules in 5th

Avenue.In anticipation of a pedestrian or cyclist

being fatally injured, residents are askingfor traffic calming measures to be imple-mented.Residents insist this is the only way to

bring speeding motorists to a halt.Belgravia Civic Association spokesper-

son Pat O’Connner insists motorists in thearea have shown no respect for the rules ofthe road.She explains drivers jumping stop streets

and speeding down the narrow roads in theneighbourhood has been a problem foryears and council has done little to helpfrustrated residents.“People don’t care if there is a stop street

or a one-way road. They just do what theywant to. The cars drive so fast down 5thAv-enue there is no way we can allow our chil-dren to play in the street otherwise theywillget knocked,” she says.“We have written numerous letters to the

council and have begged for speed bumpsto be placed in the road but years down theline there is still no change. Must someonefirst die before we are given attention.”Ward councillorMagadienDavids insists

the matter has not been ignored and will beaddressed in the new financial year.“We implemented six speed bumps and

two raised intersections for Belgravia dur-ing this financial year. There isn’t enoughmoney in the budget to address all problemsin a specific area during one financial year.We need to prioritise and decide which

projects are more important at the time,”he says.“The new financial year will kick in dur-

ing July and then I will be able to see howmuch there is available to tackle someof theoutstanding problems and projects in thearea and in the greater ward.”Davids says hewill be sending traffic offi-

cials to do an assessment of the specificstreet to identify the possibleways inwhichto solve speeding.A concerned resident, speaking at a com-

munity meeting of Belgravia Neighbour-hoodWatch lastmonth, saidhewill bewait-ing on tenterhooks to see whatmaterialisesfrom promises made by council.“Our ward councillor has done nothing

for Belgravia. Every year we are told thesame thing and that is that our problemswill be addressed in the new financialyear,” he says.“If our ward councillor is unable to pro-

vide funding fromhisward allocation budg-et he should tap into other options such asthe mayors special projects budget. Wewant to see results because there is a needfor these projects it is not just somethingweask for because we want to interfere.”Resident Angela Goliath says agrees that

funding for traffic calming measuresshould be a priority.“We aren’t interested in knowing what

our councillor has done in other areas. Weare residents of Belgravia and speeding isa major concern for us,” she says.“Yes, some traffic calmingmeasureshave

been implemented but that is only the tipof the iceberg. On weekends here are dragraces and during theweek those looking fora shortcut to the shops also race down thestreetsWith somany schools in the area weneed to make the roads safe for the kids.”

With the wet Cape Town winter rapid-ly approaching residents of the HoodRoad Informal Settlement are chal-

lenging their ward councillor to deliver onpromises of relocation.

A shackdweller, known only as Maggie,insists they were promised that once the Vy-gieskraal Informal Settlement was re-blocked they would be accommodated.

This move would give Hood Road resi-dents access to basic services such as waterand electricity.

“We haven’t heard anything from thecouncillor about moving us and, with the lit-tle rain we’ve had recently, we’ve already ex-perienced flooding. We can already feel it iscooler at night and we have no electricity orportable toilets here,” she says.

“If our kids or the elderly people need touse the toilet at night they have to go outside.It’s cold and unsafe. The same goes for water.We only have one tap and if we need to getwater, we must go outside.”

Maggie says it is unfair for their safety tobe treated less of a concern than that of peo-ple living in houses.

“We also have families who we take careof. Criminals don’t care if you are rich orpoor – if they want to attack you or stealsomething from you they will – and it doesn’tmatter where you live.”

Fellow resident Emmanuel Karlse says hewill be long gone by the time council fulfilstheir promises.

“I’ve been on the housing waiting list foryears but I don’t think I will get a home be-fore I die. Now I am living in a shack andwas promised to be moved to a better placewhere I will be able to enjoy small luxurieslike having electricity, my own toilet andbetter access to water, But once again it’s alltalk,” he insists.

“Everyone thinks they can do with us asthey please because we are disadvantagedbut they don’t know our stories. Each of ushas a reason for living under these circum-stances. For many it was not a choice but wetry and make the best of our situations.”

Ward councillor Magadien Davids insiststhat plans to relocate the 10 families livingin Hood Road is still on the cards.

“We will still be moving them as soon asthe reblocking is done. Just like with the res-idents of Vygieskraal I am asking these resi-dents to be patient. It has been difficult tostart projects while the elections were inprogress. Most projects will only now be ad-dressed, after the election,” he says.

“I understand that residents have beenconcerned because it’s getting closer to win-

ter but I am appealing to the communityto bear with us.

“Reblocking is a big task and it can’t bedone in two weeks. It takes time and itneeds to be done properly.”

Davids says if all goes according to planresidents of the Hood Road Informal Settle-ment will be relocated to Vygieskraal oncespace has been created through the re-blocking.

This comes as a relief to Lincoln Estateresidents who have also been anticipatingthe relocation of the shackdwellers.

Lincoln Estate Civic Association chair-person Fred Norman says residents havebeen fighting to have the settlement demol-ished for a long time.

“It sticks out like a sore thumb when youdrive through the area,” he says.

“The neighbours living around the set-tlement have especially been frustratedand were relieved to hear of the plans torelocate the shackdwellers.”.

“While we have sympathy for their cir-cumstances we have noticed an increase

in crime since they moved in.“Having such a settlement in the middle of

a residential area decreases the value of theadjacent properties and there is always a

mess.”Norman says he thinks a relocation will

be a win-win situation for all parties in-volved.

A spike in break-ins has made im-proved security a priority at Belgra-via Educare.

The premises in Veld Road has been bur-gled more than 10 times in the last year.

As a result the school has been forced tospend thousands on replacing broken win-dows, stolen equipment and stolen fixtures.

Principal Shireen Isaacs says they are indesperate need of additional funds for themaintenance of the school as well as im-proving security.

“We have already replaced all the win-dows in the classrooms and added wiringin the front of them so that the windowscan’t be broken.

“Everyday morning we’d find a new setofwindowsbrokenby thieves to gainaccessto the premises. Our gates have gapingholes in themand this is a cause for concern

because we have 60 young children on thepremises,” she says.

“Besides having to replace all the dam-aged and stolen property, we would like toinstall an alarm system with beams to pre-vent future burglaries.”

Established 24 years ago, the educare hasbeen a generational cornerstone for manyfamilies.

To raise the funds they desperately need,educare will be hosting a eat and treat onFriday 30 May at Barons in Skaapkraal.

“For the eat and treat we will be puttingon a fashion show with the children as wellas a comedy act by Wasief Piekaan,” Isaacssays.

MIKE FINN finds it difficult to save electricity andwater in winter, but tries. “I use the washing ma-chine less, but I use the tumble dryer more. I turnoff the geyser and only switch when needed.”

CARYN KOCK is prepared for the cold fronts. “Iuse my gas stove, the gas heater and I light upmy fire place. I also switch off my geyser and Iuse my geyser blanket, which works wonders.”

A 16-year-old Manenberg High School pu-pil was arrested for drug possession dur-ing a police operation early on Wednesdaymorning.Police spokespersonLieutenant IanBen-

nett says the boywas searched after hewas

seen acting suspiciously.“One of our constables noticed that he

shoved something deeper into his pocketwhile we conducted the search. ColonelSandile Sonjani made the arrest after dag-ga was found in the pupil’s possession,”Bennett confirms.The confiscated packet of dagga was a

bag containing six smaller bags inside, he

says.“It is suspected that the pupil was selling

dagga on school,” Bennett confirms.In a search that was conducted at two

other Manenberg schools, weapons wereconfiscated from pupils.Police are urging parents to ensure that

their children are in their proper school at-tire when leaving home.

“It makes it very difficult to determinewhich school the pupil attends if they donot wear their proper school uniform,”says Bennet.“We already have problems with unau-

thorised people trespassing on schoolpremises and if pupils wear casual clothesto school it poses a further safety threat,”he concludes.

GrandWest CSI bursary fund recipi-entswhen theywerehonoured at a gala

dinner.The 34 recipients come from all over the

province and completed studies in the fieldsof mathematics, technology and science atseven tertiary institutions in Cape Town.Nadia Anthony, of Sybrand Park, is

among the bursary fund recipients. She ob-tained a B.Com degree from UWC.A total of R9m in bursaries was handed

over since 2007when theyoungsterswere se-lected as worthy recipients of the inauguralGrandWest CSI tertiary Bursary Fund.According to a statement, they have since

excelled. In recognition of their achieve-ments, they have been invited to attend aspecial celebratory dinner at GrandWest onThursday 15 May.At inception, the GrandWest CSI Bursary

Fund pledged R5m over a five-year period,but an additional R4m has been contributedtoward the tertiary education of over 700 fi-nancially needy students.

There are no expectations of work frombursary students on completion of theirstudies, nor do they need to repay their bur-sary. Online help for jobseekersA free new online resource is set to

change the landscape for post-qualifi-cation jobseekers.

Called the World of Work, it was createdby The Independent Institute of Education(IIE). A statement says the site has been de-signed specifically to help South Africa’sgraduates bridge the gap between studiesand work, and to assist them to perform op-timally when entering the workplace forthe first time.

The site helps prospective and currentstudents, graduates and young workersnavigate the various aspects of preparingand searching for, as well as impressing intheir first jobs.

According to the statement, the resourceis “available free to all of the country’syoung people, regardless of their academicaffiliation”.

IIEdirectorDrFelicityCoughlan says: “Itis not unusual for employers to decry theill-preparedness of young people for theworking world. “The World of Work seeksto address the issues facing both jobseekersand employers, by ensuring young peopleare prepared for the application and inter-view process, but also prepared to delivertheir best and display proper work ethicfrom the word go.”

The World of Work focuses on prepara-tion, presentation, pay, impressing andpro-motion. Preparation looks at issues of de-ciding what to study, and doing the rightthings while studying to bolster your post-study chances; presentation considers as-pects such as CVs and the job applicationand interview process; pay mulls issuessuch as expectations versus opportunity,and budgeting; impress looks at how to putyour best foot forward in your first job,while promotion assists in getting ready totake your career to the next level.

“The IIE places huge emphasis on thework-preparedness of our graduates, viaour work-integrated learning approach, asthere is often a gap between graduate skillsand attributes and employer expectations.Because we know young people need all thehelp they can get,wedecided to broadenouroffering to include online advice, assistanceand thought leadership from recruiters, ac-ademics and young people who have suc-cessfully made the transition,” says Cough-lan. “The jobmarket inSA ishighly compet-itive, and it is not unusual for young peopleto search for a long time before landingtheir first job.”

In addition to receiving advice from re-cruiters and employers about what theylook for when making appointments, TheWorld of Work also shares advice and suc-cess stories from students and job-hunters’peers about how they made things work,she says.

Submissions from all were welcomed andcould be submitted via the “Share your ex-perience” button on the website.

“Additionally, if you have any burning is-sues you want us to address, we would loveto hear from you,” she says.

The fanfare for some political parties – and dejected facesfor others – are now a thing of the recent past with theelection figures in and accounted for.

Voters have made every X count and the onus is nowon political parties to make good on those pre-electionpromises.

It has been a frenzied affair to bombard the media withall the (supposedly good) works of councillors all over themetropole.

The rush job to promote councillors and punt everyounce of free publicity should be an Olympic sport, sobusy were the media houses churning out the chaff.

But it bears remembering that what happens after theelection is what counts.

There is enough work waiting for councillors – fromthe most humble of the smallest wards to the premier ofthis beautiful province.

And, unfortunately, there is nothingnew in this regard.On any given day the media is carpet-bombed with a

legion of complaints – fromwater pipes bursting to schoolbuildings indireneedof repairs, crimeandviolence, drugaddiction and peddling, and the clear shout for housing.Intermingled in this are the protest actions of those whohavehad enoughof begging andbeingplacatedby the self-same publicity reports that hit the repeat button whenresponding to the calls for improved housing, medical fa-cilities and education.

Taking public office is not a job for the faint-heartedand now is not the time to shirk responsibilities.

Fixing this province and all the additional problemswhich creep up unexpectedly is going to take a healthydose of planning, long hours at the office and outcomesthat keep most people happy most of the time.

It is, one imagines, a pretty thankless job because justas one problem is solved another crops up.

Wehope government – local andnational – canput theirpolitical differences and personality clashes aside for thegood of the people who voted for them.

Criminals out to destroyI strongly suggest reporters who write arti-cles about criminals should rethink theirempathetic tone. I am not suggesting an in-humanapproach.However, very oftenwhenwe read of active criminals who are injuredor killed by other criminals, the media in-sists on interviewing his relatives who thenexplain what a kind and wonderful personthe criminal was. The media report oftengives one the impression some journalistsdo not fully realise the negative role crimi-nals have in the overall destruction of theSouth African society.

For example, we all know there are mil-lions of South Africans directly affected bythe plague of drugs.

Drug addicts destroy the social, economicand mental fabric of our society. Sympathyheld for those afflicted by addiction shouldbe earmarked for the families and victimsof crime such as rape and murder. Sympa-thising with an injured or murdered drugdealer, drug mule or a drug addict is coun-terproductive as itmakes the efforts of those

working against drug addiction look sense-less.

Journalists should recognise the impor-tant role they play in providing leadershipto our broader society.

Drug addicts do it for the high while drugdealers and mules do it for the easy money.They are not heroes, but people who wantto destroy our communities.

Perhaps reporters who write about drug-related issues should spend more time withelderly parents who are robbed by theirdrug-addicted children instead of trying togenerate empathy for drug addicts, dealersand mules.

Canvassing for voteinvasion of privacyI got this SMS tomy cellphone on voting day(translated from Afrikaans) at 17:42 from0872405158: “Just two hours before the vot-ing polls close. TheWestern Cape is head-to-head and the DA needs every vote. Go voteand keep the Western Cape DA!”

The same day I also got a phone call froma DA call centre operator reminding me tovote for the DA. I asked where the DA gotmy cellphone number from (it is a privatenumber) and she said from the (IndependentElectoral Commission) IEC voter’s roll.

How is this possible? Isn’t there a cut-offtime for campaigning? I would like to knowwhat the IEC has to say about this as I didnot give anyone in theDAmynumberorper-mission to canvass for my vote.

Caught in the trap of addictionMore and more people are addicted tosome form of substance or activity. Itrules their lives; it becomes the centre oftheir thought process and actions. Theseaddictions often destroy them and thosepeople around them, like family andfriends.

Today many people say these peoplehave a disease. The human heart has aninverse capacity to lust, then to turn any-thing desirable into an irresistible addic-tion. Today people are addicted to alcohol,drugs, gambling, sex and even sport.

The addiction enslaves the person insuch a way that he believes he cannot dowithout that to which he is addicted.Sometimes even when a person becomessick, he does not leave the addiction. Takesmoking for example.

The person is told by the doctor to stop,but he just continues until he dies of can-cer. The more the person indulges, themore he is enslaved by the addiction. Thecontrol of the addiction becomes so severe

that the person becomes irrational. Theytotally disregard the consequences ofwhat the addiction can do to them. Maybethe original activity was harmless in thebeginning, but then it started to take con-trol of the person’s life.

Let us take alcohol, for example. In thebeginning it started out just drinking ata social event. Then the person starteddrinking just weekends, and then eventu-ally, being enslaved, must drink more of-ten.

In some cases daily. Same goes fordrugs, the human heart craves pleasure,and pretty soon the enslavement starts.What began as enjoyment, has now be-come a need you cannot go without.

A man is driven by his own lust. Thisperson will fuel his addiction, and he willbelieve he has no choice but what he doesnot know, the more he indulges, the morehe becomes addicted.

He cannot see his world is falling apart,and he can do nothing about it. The addict

has told himself lies until he believes it,he believes whatever he’s doing is harm-less.Hewill lie, cheat andeven sayhe feelslike taking his own life to get people to feelsorry for them.

Through this, he tries to get sympathyfor his addiction, until he stops lying andbecomes honest about his addiction, therewill be no way he could be helped. He willsayhe can stopat any time; this isnot true.According to his thoughts, he is a goodperson who does bad things occasionally.He might even tell people his addiction ishereditary, and that his parents had thisproblem before him. The addict believeswithin himself that he cannot help him-self.

This a lie out of hell. When the situationbecomes out of control, he lies, cheats,steals, bluffs and, when confronted, be-comesaggressive. This is not in all the cas-es. Pray for them.ARTHUR PILLAY,Email

The Youth, Safety and Religion Partnership with the Religious Fraternity will befurther extended this year based on the successes achieved during the 2012/2013December, 2013/14 Easter and December holidays.

Added benefit to buckling upSeat belts and air bags are not only good

at protecting a person’s head and chestduring a car crash. They also help pro-

tect the kidneys, according to a news reportin Wheels24.

Researchers found that survivors of carcrashes who wore a seat belt and had a vehi-cle with air bags were less likely to have aserious kidney injury or to need one of theirkidneys removed than people who didn’ttake those precautions.

Dr Marc Bjurlin, a urologist at NYU Lang-one Medical Centre in New York, says: “Thisprovides additional evidence to support therole of these protective devices in motor ve-hicles.”

Soften the impactThe research was presented on Friday 16

May at the 109th Annual Scientific Meetingof the American Urological Association inOrlando, Florida.

Seat belts are designed to spread the forceof a vehicle crash across the pelvis and chestwhile an air bag is meant to soften the im-pact between the body and car.

For the new study, the researchers ana-lysed information on motor vehicle crash in-juries in 2010 and 2011 from the NationalTrauma Data Bank. Of the 287 174 accidents,there were 2 580 kidney injuries.

The researchers found that when air bagsand seat belts were used together, the riskof serious kidney injuries fell by about 23%.The risk of surgery to remove a kidney fellby more than half.

Bjurlin says there are likely multiple rea-sons why using seat belts and air bags pro-tects the kidneys.

For example, seat belts keep people frommoving around the vehicle while alsospreading out the impact of the crash.

Ironically, in some studies the seat belthas been found to be a cause of kidney inju-ries. While that may be true in some cases,he says, overall wearing seat belts and usingair bags is beneficial.

Violets RFC will look to return to win-ning ways on Saturday after suffer-ing their second loss of the season

last weekend.The Chucker Road club are second on

the Super League C table and already looklike contenders for the title.

However, if Violets are to take the leagueand earn promotion to Super League B,they will need to be more consistent.

Violets kicked off the season with a 14-20loss away to Observatory’s Silvertree, beatStrand 21-15 at home, thrashed Van derStel 52-21 away, beat Northerns 19-3 athome, thumped Eerste River 51-15 at homeand slumped to a 6-8 loss away to Manen-berg Rangers last Saturday.

Victory against Rangers would haveseen Violets on top of the standings, butLanga currently lead the standings, onepoint ahead on 21. They will travel to facefifth-placed Strand United in Strand thisweekend and, with Langa on a bye, a victo-ry will see Violets top the table temporari-ly. Meanwhile, Manenberg Rangers willtravel to Somerset West to face RaithbyUniversals buoyed by their victory againstone of the front runners.

The narrow win against Violets wasRangers’ first in five attempts this season,having suffered defeats to Franschoek

United, Silvertree, Langa and Strand in pre-vious games.

In Raithby, the Manenberg side face one ofjust two sides in the tournament with a per-fect record.Universals racked up large scoresin victories against Van der Stel, StrandUnited, Elsies River and Stellenbosch Coro-nations, and currently hold third place onthe table with 19 points in the bag.

Rangers will have put in another massiveperformance to turn over this Super LeagueC heavyweight.

Seventh-placed Silvertree have a mucheasier fixture in store and should be expectedto win.

After the win against Violets, Silvertreewent on to beat Manenberg Rangers, lose toStellenbosch Coronations, lose to StrandUnited, beat Bonteheuwel’s Silverleaf andlose to Elsies River United last Saturday.

This weekend they host Eerste River RFC,who are 13th on the table after a solitary winin five matches.

Silvertree should heap more misery on thevisitors and win the game comfortably.

The match will take place at Malta Park inObservatory at 15:30.

The Mr Price High Schools’ League topthree are rueing their missed opportu-nities after dropping points in last

weekend’s fixtures.Beacon Hill High School went into Satur-

day’s matches leading the log on nine points,ahead of second-placed Portland High ongoal difference and with defending champi-ons Mondale in third on six points.

All three sides played to draws on Satur-day, with the top two missing the chance toopen a gap at the top of the standings andMondale butchering an opportunity to closethe gap on the leaders.

Beacon Hill drew 1-1 with Oval NorthHigh, while Portland’s match against Bel-gravia was deadlocked at 2-2 and Mondaledrew 1-1 against Aloe High.

The results mean all three sides maintain

their log positions, with Beacon Hill andPortland on 10 points and Mondale on seven.

Saturday’s results had a larger impact onthe middle of the table, with several sidesshifting upwards and Cloetesville, Tafelsigand Cedar now level on points with Mon-dale. Cloetesville beat Strandfontein 4-1 toclimb from fifth to fourth and Tafelsig leaptfrom 10th to fifth with a 3-1 win over Glen-dale, who dropped to seventh.

Cedar now occupy sixth place thanks to a1-0 win over Spine Road.

The other results had little effect on the ta-ble, with Lentegeur dropping from sixth toninth and Rocklands maintaining 13th placeafter a the sides drew 1-all.

Westridge and Princeton stayed in 14thand 15th places respectively after drawing2-2.

The league will continue on Saturday, butthe status quo at the top of the table will like-ly be unchanged with the top teams all ex-

pected to pick up wins against lesser oppo-sition.

Killers spreading germs. Thisis what Manenberg councilflat tenants are calling the

rats holding them hostage in theirhomes.

But disease isn’t the only thingthey are spreading.

A child was recently left with abloody hand after being bitten bya rat.

Now residents are demandingthat the City of Cape Town clean uptheir rental stock.

Maureen Koopman’s four-year-old son was recently rushed to anearby clinic after being bitten.

“I woke up to the sound of my sonscreaming and saw his hand cov-ered in blood. At first I thought hegot his hand stuck in something,but then I saw the deep fleshwound,” she says.

“My son was screaming andpointed to a rat, which I saw hada bloody mouth. It had bitten off abig chunk of flesh from his middleand ring finger on his right hand.”

If you saw a rat running acrossthe room, it could “easily be mis-taken for a kitten”.

“These aren’t your average furryrodents. These are germ-spreadingkillers,” she insists.

“This infestation is unaccepta-ble. Council needs to do somethingabout it. You can’t leave your door

open or the rats come running in.”Fuming residents insist they are

tired of sharing their food, beds,toilets and clothes with these“cheeky” pests.

Tenant Shirley Abrahams saysher council unit is infested.

“I have thrown away so muchclothing and food because the ratseat everything. At night you willsee them running from room toroom. My children are so scaredthey don’t even want to sit withtheir feet on the floor when theywatch TV,” she fumes.

Complaints have been receivedby the City of Cape Town, confirmsMayoral Committee member forHealth Benedicta van Minnen.

She says the health directorate’sactual expenditure on pest controlfor the past five years is over R2m.

“We have budgeted R560 570 forpest control for the current finan-cial year. We have a number of ro-dent prevention measures in placeincluding block-baiting and aware-ness campaigns,” she says.

“The City is currently in theprocess of proposing an IntegratedRodent Management Strategy tothe administration and politicalmanagement committees for theirapproval. The strategy proposes anumber of poison-free strategiesincluding rat cages and rat traps.”

In accordance with internation-al practice, City Health proactivelymanages the areas where rodent

breeding occurs, Van Minnen says.“This is done by means of tradi-

tional baiting methods and healtheducation. Where applicable, weinstitute legal action against peo-ple responsible for creating condi-tions that encourage rodent breed-ing,” she warns.

An Elbe Street resident, whoasked that her name not be pub-lished, is convinced the infestationis a result of illegal dumping in theneighbourhood. “The rats comefrom the field behind my house.People throw their dirt bags, scrapand even building materials wher-

ever they see an open space,” sheseethes. “Another problem is peo-ple leaving their bins outside. Thetrolley people scratch in the binsbefore they are collected and thenthrow everything out of the binwithout putting it back.”
