Manenberg police spokesperson Lieuten- ant Ian Bennett confirms an argument be- tween two pupils last week got heated and resulted in both pupils being stabbed. “One pupils stabbed the other with a pen- cil and the other retaliated by attacking the other with a pen,” he says. “Neither were seriously injured and no formal charges were laid, but the behaviour is a concern. Someone could have been seri- ously injured.” Manenberg High principal Thurston Brown says they will not tolerate fighting among pupils. “We have very strict rules against fight- ing. If pupils are involved in a fight they re- ceive detention and have to attend a disci- plinary hearing,” he says. “Fighting is very serious and a concern to us because gangs are often trespassing on the school ground and have access to dan- gerous weapons. On more than one occasion children have been stabbed or injured with objects.” Brown confirms he is aware of gang influ- ences on the school grounds and says the school is in the process of determining an ac- tion plan to help fight gangsterism at school. “I don’t think children are aware of the se- rious harm they could cause. In areas like Manenberg where people are already suffer- ing because of violence, we can’t afford to have gang activity negatively influencing our children,” he says. Bennett says if children see family mem- bers or neighbours involved in gang activity it could lead to a domino effect. He also says focusing on the youth will be a big part of their community upliftment programmes this year. “Children as young as 13 and 14 years old are being arrested for murder. Children as young as eight are being used as gun run- ners and this is a scary reality. It isn’t only boys being targeted and used, but young girls too,” he says. “We have started a youth programme and will be visiting schools as well as working with individual groups of children to try and educate them on their rights and options.” Bennett says ensuring that children know their rights is a big part of this campaign. “We have been meeting with the pupil leadership of schools in the area and will be working closely with them to ensure that children know their options. We are partner- ing with the education and social develop- ment departments to ensure that children are able to make a success of their school ca- reer without being held back by negative in- fluences,” he says. “We want to build trust between the police and community so that they will feel free to come forward with information or for help. If we are able to evoke a different way of thinking at a young age it can prevent chil- dren from getting involved with gangs.” Phoenix High principal Mr Abrahams agrees, saying it is important to create a vio- lence-free generation. “We do everything to encourage pupils to work hard at school and to uplift themselves, but then you get outside influences that damage what we try to build up. We have im- plemented strict rules against Violence in the school code of conduct. We have been lucky to have no serious incidents lately,” he says. No illegal activity will be tolerated on school premises. Hundreds of men and women from across the Western Cape came together in solidarity in Manenberg on Saturday 21 February. With boots, flip-flops and dress shoes alike lined up they marched against police killings. The march was organised by the provincial Community Police Forum board and supported by officials from provincial police, the mayors office and the Department of Community Safety. HEALTH

Home birth explainedMONIQUE DUVAL

@monique_duval

You’ re pregnant. For many womenthese two words could send shockwaves throughout their bodies.

While some may be happy and ready tobecome a mom, others may feel anxiousand worried. With a flurry of emotions –whether you are happy or sad, excited oranxious – all pregnant women will have tofigure out a birth plan. But as medical costs continue to rise,

many women are exploring their optionsincluding having their babies at home.Later this week a group of expecting

moms, coupled with midwives, birth ex-perts and partners will gather in Muizen-berg to discuss issues around home birth-ing. The informal event will be hosted byHome Birth South Africa in Muizenberg.

Early beginningsIn 2010,whileworking as doulas LanaPe-

tersen and Ruth Ehrhardt became frustrat-ed with not being able to provide informa-tion on home births to expecting moms.A doula is a woman who offers continual

emotional and physical support to a labou-ring woman (and her partner).Together they decided to start hosting

home birth gatherings where doulas, mid-wives and interested parties sat togetherand shared their stories. HomeBirth SouthAfrica was formed and a website with ev-erything expecting parents need to knowcreated. Here women share their stories and pho-

tographs of home birth.

Misconceptions

Safety, cleanliness and complications aresome of the main issues faced by HomeBirth South Africa.Petersen explains despite a long history

of home births across the world, with mod-ern-daymedical procedures, many still per-ceived giving birth to be a medical proce-dure.She says birth is a natural physiological

process and only requires medical inter-vention when there are complications.Petersen explains in preparation for a

home birth, the first step is for the motherto pick a caregiver.“The midwife will then ensure the moth-

er visits the hospital to ensure that a natu-

ral home birth is safe and there are no com-plications.”Throughout thepregnancy, the caregiver

conducts regular check-ups and helps pre-pare women accordingly. “Midwives arehighly skilled and trained. They also workwith back-up hospitals so in the case ofemergency they are equipped to assist.”

ChoicePetersen says the gatherings are held to

help expecting parents explore their op-tions.She explains while they do not try and

convince moms to take the home birth op-tion, they aim to provide all the necessaryinformation to ensure parents choose abirth plan that suits them.“The one advantage is that because it’s

your home, you are not bound by hospitalprotocols. Here the mom can decide whoshewants to have around her and she is notsurrounded by strangers,” she adds. The gathering will take place on Sunday

1March at 18 Axminster Road,Muizenbergfrom 14:00 to 16:00.The gathering is aimed at thosewhohave

given birth at home, for those who havewanted home births, for those who areplanning a home birth or are thinkingabout it or are just curious. It is also for those whose home births did

not go as they had wished. Midwives anddoulas are also welcome.Entry is R60 per person or R100 for two

people.V For more information visit www.homebirth.org.zaor call Ruth on 078 557 9070 or email ruth@homebirth.org.za or call Lana on 073 514 9754 or [email protected].

BRIDGETOWN

Grime allows rats to run wildTARRENLEE HABELGAARN

@LeeLaVidaLoca

Living close to an illegal dumping site isno laughing matter. Just ask residentsliving near such an area in Bridgetown.

Now they are calling on the City of CapeTown to act.

Not only is an illegal dumping site in Tar-entaal Road an eyesore for homeowners liv-ing adjacent toit, but it has also been attract-ing rodents and flies.

Abigail Schoeman says on some days itfeels like she is living in a pigsty.

“It is so filthy outside that if my door isopen you can smell the rotten productsdumped there in the sun,” she explains.

“The rats come running into my houseand here are always a lot of flies, especiallyon hot days. I am tired of this and want itremoved,” she says.

“I don’t know when council is going tocome up with a solution, but action needs tobe taken and quickly.”

Another resident, who spoke on conditionof anonymity, says while council has at-tempted to remove the dumping there hasbeen no permanent solution to the problem.

“We can’t have unoccupied space in theward and that is the main problem. Peoplewill continue to dump as long as there isspace. Council has removed the dumping onseveral occasions and every time someoneelse just dumps again. Waste, furniture, rub-ble and food are all thrown on this heap andit is a serious health risk,” he says.

“Rats and flies carry many illnesses andcan make people very sick. These are giantrats that are here and damage your curtains, clothes and wherever they are able to nibbleat things. It’s disgusting and unhygienic tohave to struggle with a problem like this.”

He says his children are also terrified tosleep at night because you can hear the ver-min running around.

“I have young children and it is traumaticfor them to hear the rats running up anddown the house during the night. One of mydaughters even woke up in the middle of thenight with one on her bed.”

A neighbourhood watch member says notonly is the dumping site a health risk but asafety risk too.

“These kinds of heaps attract criminalsand this road especially is next to the N2.Where people see dumping sites they comeand scratch for metals and other things tosteal which invites them into the area,” hesays.

“We don’t want this illegal dumping in ourarea and sadly it is our own people who arecausing the problem. We want to make ourcommunity a safer place but we need the res-

idents to do their part too. We can’t have peo-ple dumping all kids of things on our openspaces. If we don’t show we care and takepride in our area the criminals think it isan easy target.”

Ward councillor Suzette Little says shehas addressed the issue on many occasionsbut adds that the youth will be assisting intackling open spaces in the ward.

“Every open space we can find will beturned into a poverty relieving space. Wewill be planting community vegetable gar-dens on all the public open spaces in theward as a way to prevent dumping but alsoprovide food for those who don’t have,” shesays.

“Our young people will be tackling theproject but we ask that everybody come on-board and take ownership of these gardensand spaces to prevent people from messingup our ward.”

Businesses and residents illegally dumping is an ongoing concern in Bridgetown. PHOTO: TARRENLEE HABELGAARN

MANENBERG

Sixth rehab centre to openThe finishing touches are being put to

the newest substance abuse treatmentcentre in Manenberg.

The centre is to open its doors soon.Run by the City of Cape Town’s health di-

rectorate, this will be the sixth site citywidededicated to providing treatment for alcoholand drug addiction.

Renovations are currently being finalisedat the site, which is situated at the RuimteRoad satellite clinic.

The site will provide the same range of ser-vices offered at the existing treatment sitesincluding screening, assessment, early re-covery groups, relapse prevention groups,individual/group sessions, weekly drugtesting, family education groups, and socialsupport groups.

Siyabulela Mamkeli, the City’s MayoralCommittee Member for Health, says there isa dire need for effective treatment facilitiesand services in many of the communities.

“This is a big step for us and I am reallyexcited about the project, because we arecasting our net even wider in our quest tobring services closer to our communities. This site in Manenberg will help to alleviatethe need.”

Mamkeli encourages the community tomake use of this service.

The City currently has five substanceabuse treatment sites which are run in Tafel-sig, Khayelitsha, Delft South, Milnerton andParkwood.

During the last financial year, the fivesites saw a combined total of 1621 clients.

Mamkeli says the main indicator for suc-cess of a treatment programme is the per-centage of drug-free urine tests.

“Currently, for this financial year, the per-centage of drug-free urine tests at the exist-

ing facilities range between 73% in Khayelit-sha and 91% in Tafelsig, while the overallrate for all sites is 80%. HIV testing has alsobecome standard procedure at the treatmentsites and the overall average has increasedfrom 44% to 77%.”

In addition to Manenberg, Mamkeli says, the City is also entering into partnershipswith provincial government and non-gov-

ernmental organisations to run similartreatment programmes within other areas.

“Substance abuse is a major problem inour city, but so too is access to treatment. That is why the City set out on this journeynearly seven years ago with the opening ofour first treatment site in Mitchell’s Plain,”he says.

“We have also recognised the value in

working with established NGOs and otherspheres of government to broaden our foot-print and we hope to build on these partner-ships into the future.”

We also need partnerships with communi-ties, Mamkeli points out.

“There is no point in having these treat-ment sites available if they are not fully ex-ploited by those in need,” adds Mamkeli.

This site in Ruimte Road will be the sixth rehabilitation centre to be run by the City of Cape Town’s health directorate. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

EDUCATION

Beating the oddsWhen he sat down a year ago for his

first class in his matric year, Siyam-thanda Dyasi was just eager to learn.

Pen in hand, he was ready to take his firstnotes, all the while brimming with the confi-dence to succeed.

He had no idea that months later he wouldbe one of the top 20 pupils in the WesternCape.

Today, Siyamthanda is a BCom Account-ing student at UCT – the culmination ofyears of hard work and perseverance.

He attributes his success to hard work andbeing involved in a programme called Lead-ers’ Quest from the non-profit organisationSalesian Life Choices. “I have been part ofLeaders’ Quest for the past two years. Theprogramme offered me leadership training, extra tutoring classes and assistance in theNational Benchmark Test preparation anduniversity applications. They supportedand inspired me all the way,” he says.

Siyamthanda was one of the pupils hon-oured at the 2014 National Senior Certificate(NSC) Awards hosted by the provincial edu-cation department.

“I was shocked and emotional when I gotthe call telling me I was on the top 20 meritlist. I never expected it but it was proof thatall my hard work paid off,” he says.

In this category, awards are given to can-didates who have achieved excellently in the2014 NSC examinations and included in thiscategory are those pupils who have achievedtop marks in the province.

Siyamthanda got five distinctions in his fi-nal results including 92% for Accounting,98% for Business Studies, 82% for Xhosa,82% for Life Orientation and 93% for Eco-nomics.

Even though his school is a beacon of hopefor many schools in the area, boasting oneof the highest matric passes, many wouldsay the chances are less than great that oneof its pupils would be in the top 20 in theprovince.

This as a result of the large class sizes andsocio-economic factors affecting them.

Siyamthanda’s story banishes this ideaand is both a story of success and proof thatyou are not your surroundings and that any-thing is attainable through hard work and

dedication.“I used to lose count of how many people

lived in my granny’s house. On a permanentbasis we were 12 but sometimes the housewas fuller,” says Siyamthanda.

When asked how he achieved those excel-lent results, he simply says he committedhimself to his work and that his familyplayed a big role in keeping him motivated.

“Every day I worked hard. I used to studyfor few hours at night when everyone wasasleep. My family also supported me, theyknew I wanted to get good marks and go touniversity, so they respected that,” says Si-yamthanda.

He was offered several bursaries to pay forhis studies. “I was able to choose the bursarythat paid for all my university costs. I willbe studying at UCT without it costing a centto my family,” he says.

Asked what advice he would give to thematric class of 2015, Siyamthanda says thatrevising every day helps a lot, and that pu-pils need to commit themselves to their workand forget about a social life.

“When I was studying I would be busy

with my work all week. I would get Sundaysoff ... sometimes,” he jokes. “Look for oppor-tunities and surround yourself with peoplewho believe in you.”V To find out more information about Salesian LifeChoices visit http://www.lifechoices.co.za/.

CRIME

Standing up topolice killingsSAMANTHA LEE

@Samantha_Lee121

Hundreds of pairs of feet lined up onSaturday 21 February to marchagainst police killings across the

province.Organised by the provincial Community

Police Forum (CPF) board, the march wassupported by the Department of Communi-ty Safety (Docs), provincial police, neigh-bourhood watch members, organisationsand the City of Cape Town’s security frater-nity.

Mayoral Committee Member for Safetyand Security JP Smith said they were fortu-nate to have a smaller force and so lessdeaths.

“We have been lucky, but the five deathswe have had are too many,” he told thecrowd after the march.

Smith also brought with him a messagefrom mayor Patricia de Lille.

Her message read: “I would like to thankthe CPF board for organising the event andfor setting a sterling example for others tofollow. I also regret that I cannot be thereat the event.”

But Lieutenant-General Arno Lamoer, provincial police commissioner, said themarch was not only for the men and womenin blue.

“This march is not only about us. This isalso for the community. For all those whoinnocently lose their lives,” said Lamoer.

“It is time to take back our streets and

parks.”The group marched from Nyanga Police

Station to Manenberg Police Station. While hundreds of people turned out for

the march, provincial community safetyminister Dan Plato said it was not about thepeople who attended.

“What we are more concerned about isthe message that goes out from here. Wewant to congratulate the CPF board on thisbeautiful initiative and we will go out intothe areas,” he said.

Lamoer said up until December therewere 446 attacks on police officials. Heurged residents to take action.

“The only way we can deal with policekillings effectively is if the communitystands up. Report corrupt officials to us sothat we can deal with them. Do not tell ev-eryone how corrupt police are. Do some-thing about it,” he said.

“Also, don’t attack the police. What willhappen if all officers in the Western Capedowned tools for just 30 minutes. What doyou think will happen?” he said.

Smith also said that on a trip to Germany,a man said to him that in South Africa morepolice officials had been killed than Germa-ny had lost since World War II.

“This is true compared to the rest of theworld as well. When you put on a uniformyou are at risk. We are really in the firingline,” he said, urging more residents to takea stand.

Provincial CPF members thanked all fortheir attendance and support in the event.

The march was led by officials carrying this banner. The event was supported by the Department of Community Safety, the City of Cape Town, provincial police, Community Police Forumboards and other organisations from the security fraternity.

Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security JP Smith was one of the guest speakers.“We have been lucky that not many of our officers have been killed. But the five that havedied are too many,” he said.

LieutenantGeneral Arno Lamoer, provincialpolice commissioner, walked alongside themasses in solidarity. “This is not only aboutus but about the innocent killings happeningon the Cape Flats,” he said, adding thatspecial focus should be put on keepingchildren safe.

Provincial minister for Community Safety DanPlato commended the provincial CommunityPolice Forum Board on the “beautiful initiative” and pledged the support of his department in standing up against senseless killingsand lawlessness in communities.

That is how much we love our cars. Donot punish the innocent driver justbecause his car looks nice. It is unfairand very wrong.

If people cannot modify their cars then[businesses] that sell mags and drop kitsare going to suffer, if they do not getcustomers. The unemployment rate isalready sky high.

. I think they should only go for thepeople doing illegal drag racing, as I wasalmost knocked from behind while twoToyota 20 valves were dicing. I am sureeveryone wants their cars to look nice, sowhy can’t we have rims?

Thanks for excellent public serviceI am writing with great happiness andappreciation for the wonderful publicservice which a few City traffic officersand members of the Flying Squadperformed on Thursday 29 January.

I was attending a church service inMitchell’s Plain about 21:00 when Ireceived a call that my daughter’s carbroke down on the notorious R300.

One cannot help but think of therecent dangerous incidents, wheremotorists were attacked while being onthis national road.

It is actually a sad state of affairs thatthis beautiful piece of road has becomeso dangerous for motorists. We dependon this road to earn our bread.

My wife logged a call with the emer-gency services, and I am happy to reportthat the City of Cape Town’s trafficservices and the flying squad respondedalmost immediately. My family and Iwere happy for this good public servicerendered, as our daughter was alone –far from where we were at that time. Iam aware this is their job and what they

are trained to do.As a fellow public servant I have great

appreciation for the men and women inblue who sometimes place themselves atrisk to come to the aid of others in need.

There may be many who do notappreciate the emergency services, particularly the police and law enforce-ment fraternity, but for me and myfamily, we are very appreciative of thiskind deed they performed for our daugh-ter.

I am aware we cannot reward them fordoing their duty, but we want to recog-nise them for the great selfless work theydo, while serving others in the field.

As a taxpayer, it makes me proud tosee that our taxes are being put to gooduse, when the emergency servicesrespond to even minor requests from thepublic.

I want to acknowledge a few officers inparticular who stayed with my daughteruntil the towing company arrived totransport her home. Her safety was ourmain concern and that was all that

mattered to us.Our daughter sometimes has to work

late and we feel much more relaxed nowthat we know there are traffic officersand police officers patrolling the R300and can respond in cases of emergency.

As a family we want to recogniseSergeant Clifton Botha, Constable Chris-topher Ludick, Constable Leon April,Traffic Officer Lorenzo Lackay andTraffic Officer Glen Oppel.

These officers also ensured that thetraffic flow was unhindered and safe forall when the car was recovered by thebreakdown truck.

The whole activity was a successbecause of their help.

Thank you once again and keep up thegood work. You make us proud to beSouth Africans.

We wish these officers well in theirfuture career development within in theSA public service.

Last week a Cape Town musician had his sax-ophone stolen.

But in just a few days, the beloved instru-ment was safely returned.

After discovering that his sax had been stolenfrom his car, Nick Becker took to Facebook.

He urged people to be on the lookout for theinstrument which had quite literally taken himacross the world.

His post, along with his offer of a substantialreward, went viral and within four days anothermusician called him to say he’d found it.

Despite Nick’s insistence, he wasn’t preparedto take the reward.

Jai Reddy came across someone trying to sellthe saxophone in theCBDand recognised it fromNick’s Facebook post.

He bought it, and then gave Nick a call.Theft is in some sense a part of life for many

South Africans. But what makes this story so heartwarming

is the fact that the Cape Town music fraternity, along with non-musical folk, pulled together toget this man’s sax back.

Everybody involved in the search simply hadto click “share”.

Just one click made the world of difference inmaking sure someone would recognise the sto-len instrument.

Apart from the lesson around the power of Fa-cebook, the bigger lesson here is the power ofcommunity and what we can do if we all contrib-ute just a little bit.

As American historian and social activistHowardZinn once said: “Small acts,whenmulti-plied by millions of people, can transform theworld.”

Debut album for LeeLOUISA STEYL

@LouNotes

Star Struck Voice Search winner Leanne“Lee” Heynes is preparing to launchher debut album.

The album, along with a music video andphoto shoot, are among some of the prizesshe won in the competition last year.

Lee, as she is known on-stage, heard aboutthe competition from a family friend whopretty much forced her to enter the three-month contest.

“It developed me as an artist overall,” Leesays of the Star Struck Voice Search.

The competition sees performers comple-te a series of challenges that test not onlytheir voices, but also their music businessacumen, by way of a series of tasks, givingthem a foundation to be able to take on themusic industry as an independent artist.

Although the competition took her out ofher comfort zone, Lee says she took the tasksseriously.

“I exceeded my limits. It made me dothings I never thought I was capable of.”

Organiser of the competition, Brilynn vanRooyen, from Crazy World Productions saysartists are also assigned songs that theywouldn’t usually take on to sing in StarStruck’s elimination rounds to build theirconfidence and broaden their repertoire.

Being able to record her own original mu-sic is a huge highlight for Lee on her musicaljourney so far.“I’ve never been in studio be-fore,” she says and describes the recordingof her upcoming album In my world, as a“fun experience”.BrilynnhelpedLee formu-late her ideas into songs and although thealbum focuses on love, it has an “R’nB andhip-hop feel”.

There’s even a house track called Walkaway on the album. “It’s a different style ofsinging,” Lee says of the track, adding thatthe soul elements she added helped bring outthe quality of her voice. In my world was recorded at Crazy World

Productions and Lee says it’s got an interna-tional sound.Lee and Brilynn are busy sam-pling the first three tracks from the albumto radio stations and are planning an officialalbum release in April.

But before that, Lee will be acting as anambassador and mentor for the Star StruckVoice Search 2015 which starts at Las VegasLounge in Mitchell’s Plain on Saturday 28February.

Lee encourages all local singers to enter.“If you are gifted with a talent, why keep itto yourself?”

She’s looking forward to being on the

other side of the judging table and says she’slooking for competitors with strong perso-nalities who aren’t easily intimidated.

“The competition is going to be tough.”Lee believes the competition, which is

open to rappers and singers, is also a greatway to network with other artists, openingthe doors for future collaborations.

Auditions for Star Struck Voice Search2015 take place from 09:00 to 17:00 on Satur-day 28 February. Contestants who make itthrough the auditions will go on to competein weekly rounds for a chance to win themain prize of a R300 000 record and endorse-ment deal.Email Brylinn at [email protected] or call him on074 696 4325 for more information.V Visit www.facebook.com/leemusic1 for more information about Lee and to stay up to date with her album launch.

OPEL

It’s all about the engineLES STEPHENSON

If any car brands have really demonstratedthe development of the small family carover the past 30 years, it’s those that have

been bold enough in the past to fit their prod-ucts with a three-cylinder engine.

Doing so in a country for so long obsessedwith the letter V and the numbers six andeight must have been a worrying decisionfor vehicle distributors; the most recent be-ing Opel – part of the General Motors stable– that introduced the one-litre, three-cylin-der, fifth-generation, five-door Corsa hatch-back last week.

Sixspeed boxThe same turbocharged ecoFLEX (Opel’s

capitals) engine powers the recentlylaunched Opel Adam. A 1.4-litre version willarrive later in 2015 with an auto box and thecars will be available in showrooms inMarch. Prices are remarkably close to thoseof the previous model with three trim levelsoffered: Cosmo, Enjoy, and Essentia ofwhich some require “option packages” tobring them to the level of competitors’ stan-dard stock.

The mini-mill in this new B-segment Cor-sa, which was launched internationally onlyfour months earlier in Paris, makes 85kWfrom 5-6000rpm and 170Nm from 1800-4500rpm – the benefit coming, of course, from a turbocharger – and drives through avery slick and sweet six-speed manual gear-box.

Pillar visionThe two cars I drove did, however, have

their niggles; the first made a sort of death-rattle noise as the range-standard stop/start

fuel-saver cut in and out at junctions (I wastold of at least one more that did the same),the second developed a most annoying vibra-tion noise from the facia assembly at cruisespeeds and the hazard-lights button becamestuck in its housing.

Another dislike: the two short and thickpillars, each pair forming the base of thewindscreen frame and severely restrictingvision on narrow mountain roads.

Bandaids under the bonnetWide and horizontally-split tail lights, the

automaker says, help to create another illu-sion of extra width and incorporate the fron-tal ‘wing’ motif when illuminated.

Opel has chosen a chronograph style forthe instrumentation – very neat – with sup-plementary controls on the steering-wheel;no cruise control, though, which I see as afailing. There’s also no ‘tween-seats liddedbox (something I always find useful forhouse keys, cell-phone) but plenty of cup/bottle holders.

Opel makes much in its media release ofaerodynamics and sealing on the B pillar;

there are also lots of little pieces fitted Band-aids under the bonnet, one stiff piece ofwhich could have been responsible for thesecond car’s unpleasant noise – rather likeblowing over a blade of grass stretched be-tween your thumbs.

The base model has 15” wheels and 215-profile tyres.

Awardwinning infotainmentAll new Corsas, Opel says, “have a raft of

standard safety equipment as well, ensuringnothing is left to chance”. These includeABS with EBD and BAS, adaptive brakelights and automatic hazard lights, discbrakes all-round, the latest in electronic sta-bility control, six crash bags, tyre-pressuremonitors, a pedal release system, IsoFixchild seat anchor points, pre-tensioned seatbelts, a seat belt reminder and an anti-theftalarm and immobiliser.

And for those who failed clutch control,hill-start assistance.

While the one-litre engine might be revo-lutionary, so is Opel’s award-winning Intel-liLink infotainment system, which bringsthe connected world of smartphones andapps into the car. It is available as an optionon Enjoy and Essentia models, and standardon Cosmo.

IntelliLink is fully compatible with the lat-est Android and Apple iOS-based smart-phones.

The model range1.0T Essentia (R185 500)1.0T Enjoy (R216 200)1.0T Cosmo (R236 300)All new Opel Corsa units have a five-year

or 120 000 km warranty and a three-year or60 000 km service plan.– Wheels24.co.za

KTM

Take an Adventure on an adventureKTMunleashes anAdventure range strong-er than ever with the arrival of the KTM1290SuperAdventure andKTM1050Adven-ture to bolster the dynamic and newly re-fined KTM 1190 Adventure and 1190 Adven-ture R for 2015.With over a decade of experience and de-

velopment, the currentAdventure rangede-ploys some of the most sophisticated auto-motive technology combined with KTM’s‘Ready To Race’ philosophy to make thesebikes more dynamic, safer and excitingthan ever. The KTM 1290 Super Adventure lives up

to its name by redefining the standard forluxury touring on a motorcycle. Boastingfeatures including 160hp, 140Nm, semi-ac-tive suspension, cornering lights, cruisecontrol, optional hill hold control, KTMpowers into its new segment with a bikethat embodies superlative technology in ev-ery respect as far as its power, comfort andequipment goes – but of course with an ex-plicitly dynamic touch. The KTM 1050 Adventure employs nei-

ther excessive power nor equipment for

those who demand a travel enduro that de-livers pure riding enjoyment in comfortover long distances, but with a chassis thatcan exploit the twisty routes or simply outmanoeuvre traffic when escaping. With itsV-twin engine beginning its life from theKTM 1190 Adventure, the reduction in ca-pacity comes without a decrease in fun –matching its bigger brother for power andtorque up to its 95hp. For riders on an A2licence, the 1050 can be restricted to meetthese requirements. For such a dedicated range of bikes, KTM

has launched a devoted microsite to thesemachines – www.ktmadventure.com. Thisis where riders can find out further detailson the line-up, comparing the models towork out which Adventure is for them. Thehuge array of PowerParts enhancementsand personalization for these bikes can beinvestigated and riders can also share pho-tos of their own adventures to help inspireothers. These exciting machines will then be-

comeavailable atKTMdealers acrossSouthAfrica in autumn of this year.

Freight HandlingThe movement of cargo through the supply chain requires people to operate forklift trucks, cranes thatload containers onto ships, and straddle carriers that move containers to the ships side.

Terminals and warehouses require people to manage cargo in and out of facilities. There are essentiallyfreight handlers in most businesses. Freight Handling is an integral part of the supply chainmanagementsystem and provides a vital support service to industries which span all modes of transport.

Learners completing this qualification, in whatever area of specialization selected, will be able todemonstrate the ability to consider a range of options related to their chosen field in order to makedecisions and improve performance around, inter alia, freight handling administration, planning, goodshandling, storage, transport planning and the basics of freight handling equipment maintenance.

SEAN CAMPBELL

The highly anticipated, potential league-deciding match between Giants andCrusaders truly lived up to the pre-

match hype.It was fast, exciting, action-packed and

with the short game squeezed in aswell. Bat-

tle lines were drawn as supporters fromGrassy park and Kensington came out intheir numbers to support their teams.

The Giants started with Jaydee Thorneand he contained the Crusaders’ hitters forsix innings before he exhausted his 110pitches allowed for the day.

Thorne (6 innings, 2 Hits, 3 BB, 5K’s and

2 HBP) was replaced by Kurt Pretorious atthe top of the 7th inning with the score 7-4to the Giants.

This is where the wheels came off for theGiants, as Pretorious (0.1 inning, 1 Hit, 3Runs, 3 BB) struggled to find the plate andwas later replaced byCarloKoks in the sameinning. Crusaders found Koks’ pitching totheir liking. Koks finished the game (2.2 in-ning, 5 Hits, 3 BB) but was also sabotaged bythe Giants poor defence. The Giants made 5errors in the game.

Crusaders surprised the Giants by start-ing with the experienced Benjamin van derRoss. This almost backfired on Crusaderswhen Van der Ross conceded 4 runs in thefirst inning. Van der Ross (2.1 inning, 3 Hits,3 BB and 3HBP) was quickly replaced by theyoung Cameron Fortuin. Fortuin did muchbetter (6.2 inning, 6 Hits, 0 BB and 7 K’s) andmade scoring difficult for the Giants. Cru-saders were fortunate that the four errorsthey made weren’t as costly as the Giants’errors. Carlo Koks 4/5, 1 RBIwas theGiants’best batter. Aldrin Hendricks 2/3, 2 RBI’sand Cameron Fortuin 2/5 were Crusaders’best batters.

* In Softball action, Glenthorn A defeated

Falcons 6-3 on Saturday to secure their thirdsuccessiveWestern Province Softball Feder-ation (WPSF) Super League Championshipwith three games still to be played.

GlenthornAhas a very successful fieldingunit spearheaded by cousins Alex and Ni-cole Fortune, which is well complementedby the powerful and effective pitching ofLauren Mulder and she was well supportedby the standout hitting of Carla Swanepoeland Lisa Erasmus.

Glenthorn A remains on course for theLeague and Knockout Double when theyface Falcons in the final next month.
