NAME:

DATE: ..Read the passage and complete the following task.

If you're new to gardening, start off with a small garden. You can always expand later if you can't get enough of those fresh, crispy vegetables. Choose a location that receives as much sun as possible throughout the day. Next, examine the soil. Is it predominantly clay, sand or a sandy loam? The latter is the best. Vegetables will not grow well on poorly drained soil, even though supplied with adequate fertilizer. If your soil has a lot of clay or is poorly drained, make the beds high so they will drain quickly.

Once the bed is ready, plant your vegetables. Choose only the ones that you like best. You can get the seeds from nurseries .Choose quality seeds and do not keep them unplanted for more than three days. Sow the seeds directly in the ground as most plants grow best this way.

Do not expect the seeds to grow overnight. Water the seeds regularly and sprinkle some fertilizer lightly on the soil beds. Make sure the seed does not come into direct contact with the fertilizer as it could burn them. Watch out for snails and grasshoppers as they might destroy the young plants. Dont forget to maintain the garden and pull the unwanted weeds before they spread.

Step back and enjoy what you have accomplished. You will be able to enjoy your fresh vegetables with constant care of your garden.

Write a summary on how to start a vegetable garden. Use your own word as far as possible without changing its original meaning.

Julio Diaz, a social worker in New York has a daily routine. Every night he takes the subway home and gets out one stop earlier to eat at his favourite eatery.

One night, as Diaz stepped off the train and onto an almost empty platform, something unexpected happened to him. He was walking towards the shop when a teenage boy approached and pulled out a knife. He asked for Diazs wallet and the social worker gave it to him without a struggle.

As the boy walked away, Diaz called out to him.

Hey, wait a minute. You forgot something. If youre going to rob some more people for the rest of the night, you might need my coat to keep you warm.

Why are you doing this? asked the bewildered boy.

If youre willing to risk your freedom for a few dollars, then I guess you must really need the money. I mean, all I wanted to do was get dinner and, if you really want to join mehey, youre more than welcome.

Diaz and the boy went into the eatery and sat down. The manager came by, the dishwashers came by and the waiters came by and Diaz said hi to all of them.

You know everybody here. Do you own this place? asked the boy.

No. I am just a faithful customer here.

But, youre nice to everybody, even the dishwasher.

Diaz replied, Havent you been taught t be nice to people?

Yeah, but I didnt think people actually behaved that way, the boy said.

The boy looked lost in thought for a while. When the bill arrived, Diaz told the teen., look I guess youre going to have to pay the bill.

The boy returned his wallet without much of a thought. Diaz gave him twenty dollars. Diaz asked him for something in return, his knife. He was taken aback but handed over the knife.

The moral of the story is, if you treat people right, you can only hope that they will treat you right.

Sometimes it would be better if we check first before we take any action hastily. That was what Ruben and Zainal learnt last week. They were on their way home from school last week. As they passed Mak Indahs guava orchard, they saw two men behind the bushes. They became suspicious as the two men looked like strangers to them. Knowing that Mak Indah is alone because her husband, a teacher, was still in school, they decided to frighten the two men.

They went behind the two men quickly and swung their bags at their heads. At the same time, Zainal shouted, Police! What are you doing there?

The two men fell to the ground, shouting for help. Mak Indah, hearing the commotion, came running out of the house. She laughed when Ruben told her about the two men.

She went and helped them up to their feet. Apparently, they were the two workers whom she had just employed to help out with the plucking of the guavas that morning. They were looking for some fruits in the bushes.

Ruben and Zainal apologized to them and in return, promised to help them to pluck the guava. That was their first visit to the village. That was why the boys had not seen them before. Soon, they were happily plucking and packing the fruits together.

Malaysia has many beautiful beaches. Among them is the Tanjong Bidara beach. It is very popular among tourists, both local and foreign.

Sadly, this beach has become an eyesore. Rubbish is thrown everywhere. Bottles, plastic containers, paper, cans and left-over food are found at the many picnic spots along the beach. Dustbins are overflowing with rubbish. You can see many plastic bags strewn along the beach.

In the sea, you can see plastic bottles floating. Even baby diapers are seen floating in the water. Rotten wood from broken furniture is also a common sight.
