Question 21(a) – 21(c)

The question requires candidate to write suitable response based on each situation shown in the picture.

Answer is written in polite manner, applying the moral values instilled in the syllabus. It

is fulfilling the requirement of the question perfectly. It shows that the candidate

understand the stimulus perfectly and putting good effort to give answer using HOTS.

Question 22(a) and (b)

For Question 22 (a) and (b), candidates are required to read the story and respond ‘True’

or ‘False’ on the statements based on the text.

It is obvious that the candidates understand the text well, not guessing the answers.It also shows that the candidates understand the rubric (to state ‘True’ or ‘False’) instead of ticking or matching, for instance.

Question 22(c) requires the candidate to give an example based on the story read.

The candidate is able to choose the correct ideas to answer the question and combined them into a compound sentence. They are able to rephrase the ideas in their own words, yet relevant to the question and situation.

Question 22(d) requires candidate to demonstrate comprehension of the text.

The candidates’ answers show the candidates’ level of understanding to the text. They are able to paraphrase the ideas and construct compound sentences. There are no direct lifting evidence in their answers. QUESTION 23

Question 23(a) and (b) requires candidate to study the table given and answer questions related to the table given.

Most candidates could tick ( / ) correctly as they could understand the text read and the content of the text.

Question 23(c) requires candidate to match information from List A to information on List B based on the table provided.

Example of answer:

Matching was found easy as the phrases in the grid have quite a direct clue from the table/text given. Candidates could easily refer and find the answer in the text read.

Question 23(d)

Question 23(d) requires candidate to write two other items they can purchase at a book shop.

Example of answer:

All kinds and types of things were given as answers by the candidates and they were related to things sold in the book shop. Some even state some dried foods, tit-bits and packet drinks. The answers the candidates provide show that they relate their lives experience into answering the questions.

Question 23(e) requires candidate to choose a book from the list and state reason(s).

Answer 2:

Candidates provide creative answers with reasons they had experienced in their daily life routine. Those creative candidates would use their own words to provide direct, precise and excellent answers (refer to example 1). In the other example, answer given was longer and had extra reasons. Candidates provide more than one reason.

Question 24(a)

Question 24(a) requires candidate to respond based on the advertisement.

Question asked was direct and all candidates did very well as it is very direct from the text as the price of the set was clearly stated in the text.

Question 24(b)

Question 24(b) requires the candidate to select the most suitable answer based on the information given.

Obviously the dialog talked about dinner and the choices given for candidates to choose is obviously only one correct time which is 8.00pm.

Question 25(a)

Question 25 requires candidate to list two beverages that they know.

Answer:

Candidates who understand the word ‘beverages’ could give all sorts of drinks, juices, hot or cold as well as iced blended and Italian, American and even the Japanese sake and even alcohol drinks.

Question 25(b)

Based on the advertisement and the dialogue, candidates are required to choose possible option and state reason(s) of their choice.

Answer:

Candidates refer to the text read to get answers. They were found to be careful in answering as most of them provide answers such as “there are 4 people/members in the family”.

But a minority were able to relate their real life situation in their answers such as:

Question 25(c) requires the candidates to respond to a suggestion whether to agree or disagree. Next, the candidates are required to provide reason(s) on why they agree/disagree.

All the candidates agreed with the time given and the reasons given are creative and related to their own daily life experience and situation.

SUGGESTIONS TO THE CANDIDATES

1. Aware of current issues. 2. Make a draft of ideas and combine them into compound sentence correctly. 3. Do a lot of reading to increase vocabulary and to give variety to sentence structures. 4. Observe the pictures and read the text to get full understanding of the situation and

text. Then choose the most suitable and correct answer to be fits the question. 5. Read and understand the requirement of the questions. 6. Try to use good expressions/vocabulary instead of common ones to show the

difference of ability. 7. Understand the requirement of the question, then use own words to express ideas

instead of copying directly from the text. 8. Make full use of the dictionary.

SUGGESTIONS TO THE TEACHERS

1. Expose the students to as many general knowledge as possible. 2. Cover all the units in the text book to give students a clear picture of the syllabus. 3. Give as many exercises as possible, especially for Question 21, where they need to

know the proper and correct response to different situations. 4. Expose the students to variety of HOTS questions, for example, to giving opinion,

giving reasons, making choices and give supporting details. 5. Use dictionary in the classroom. 6. Encourage brainstorming activities in the classroom. 7. Encourage students to discuss the task given or an issue in groups to enable them

to provide creative ideas.
