Obsessive-compulsive disorder is an anxiety disorder in which people have unwanted and repeated thoughts, feelings, ideas, sensations, or behaviors that make them feel driven to do things. *Repetitive behaviors such as hand washing, counting, checking, or cleaning are often performed with the hope of preventing obsessive thoughts or making them go away. Performing these rituals provides only temporary relief, and not performing them dramatically increases anxiety. People with OCD may be aware that their obsessions and compulsions are senseless or unrealistic, but they cannot stop themselves.*There is evidence that a serotonin imbalance may be passed on from parents to children, suggesting OCD may be inherited. Studies also have found a link between a certain type of infection caused by the Streptococcus bacteria and OCD. This infection, if recurrent and untreated, may lead to the development of OCD.
There are environmental stressors that can trigger OCD in people with a tendency toward developing the condition. Certain environmental factors may also cause a worsening of symptoms. *He wrote a book entitled Heres the Deal, Dont Touch Me. He is an accomplished comedian, actor, and TV personality on shows such as Deal or No Deal, and Americas Got Talent.*Mandel is married and has three children. He has been married to his wife Terry for 32 years, and theirchildren are Jackie, 27, Alex, 22, and Riley, 19.*When his children were little he was so germ phobic that he couldnt take his children into public restrooms for them to use the bathroom. At one point in his life he also slept in the guest house whenever his children were ill. The whole family has gone to counseling to help deal with his OCD. They pull together as a family to help deal with all that he has to go through.*Howie Mandel had a lot of struggles in his life from the time he was little. He still struggles with a lot of issues from his OCD. Mandel was not diagnosed with OCD until he was an adult, but knows that he suffered from it as a kid. His family embraced his quirkiness and loved him for who he was. As a child there was a stigma against anyone having a mental illness so they never sought any treatment.
Mandel does many things to help control his OCD. He takes medication and goes to therapists. He does not shake peoples hands, he chooses to fist bump instead. He also shaves his head because he feels it is cleaner.
**He has turned many of his struggles into positive things that teach others about ways to deal with these struggles. He has become a mouthpiece for the OCD community. He wrote a book entitled Heres the Deal, Dont Touch Me. He is an accomplished comedian, actor, and TV personality.
"My wife and kids have had to cope throughout the years with my idiosyncrasies. It's a tightrope. All of us have gone through therapy," he told USA Today. "They have always loved and supported me. But even with all that support and love it's still incredibly hard, sometimes terrifying and dark.
