Greetings Brothers, Contestants, Parents and Instructors,

On behalf of the Third District of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated, I would like to welcome you to the Third District’s Talent Hunt Competition and the 81st Third District Meeting. The Fraternity’s Talent Hunt Competition was established as a means to provide exposure, encouragement and financial assistance, in the form of potential college scholarships, to young people who participate in the performing arts.

I salute each one of the contestants for their dedication to their craft and the pursuit of excellence. It takes a great deal of discipline, sacrifice and commitment to be able to perform and compete at the level at which these young people compete. These are the character traits which will serve them well and guarantee success in whatever field of endeavor they choose to pursue. The parents and instructors also deserve congratulations and thanks for their continuing support, nurturing, and most importantly, love, in helping these talented young people hone their skills and achieve their dreams.

Finally, I would like to thank Bro. William Prentiss and the Third District Talent Hunt Committee for their extremely hard and dedicated work in ensuring that our Talent Hunt Competition will continue to remain as the highlight event of the Third District Meeting.

OMEGA PSI PHI FRATERNITY, INC. The Talent Hunt Idea

Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Talent Hunt idea was created in the Fraternity’s Sixth District (North and South Carolina) in 1945 and the first District Talent Hunt Program was held in Charlotte, North Carolina on April 19, 1946. The need for such a program was born out of the unequal opportunity afforded to some American youths to develop and give full expression to their talents.

The original statement of the Talent Hunt idea included this expression: “Creative and outstanding capacities in any honorable activity should be eligible for consideration.” In presenting the first public program, the displays of talent were limited to the field of music.

The Talent Hunt idea has become one of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity’s international projects, with all graduate chapters mandated to conduct an Annual Talent Hunt Program. On the local and district levels, the project is competitive. At the international level, the program is a demonstration. The international program showcases district winners, who by their talent, diligence, ability, and potential appear as guests of the fraterni-ty. At this stage of our growth, the Talent Hunt is proceeding on the international level along three lines:

1) At each session of the Grand Conclave, a Talent Hunt demonstration is presented to the public.

2) In addition, Omega is also interested in what it calls a “Fundamental Search for Talent.” Here the Fraternity hopes to develop the process and resources through which it can help discover and provide assistance, as may be needed, to young people who have shown and possess talents of outstanding and exceptional quality. The field of interest will not be limited to music but all areas of the performing arts.

3) In our projected planning, we hope to further encourage the contestants on our Talent Hunt programs by recommending them to our chapters and other organizations throughout the United States for presentations in their respective communities.

Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Talent Hunt contestants have appeared on the Ted Mack Original Amateur Hour, at the Apollo Theater, Radio City Music Hall, Philadelphia Academy of Music, Philadelphia Civic Center, New York City, Washington, DC Centers for the Performing Arts, the Eastman Theater, etc.

The Talent Hunt program has been very rewarding to the brotherhood of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and many talented youth. We will continue to search for and support our gifted youth!

DENNIS BROWN is a native of Alexandria, Virginia and retired in 2010 as the Music Department Chair and Director of Band/Orchestra at C.D. Hylton High School in Woodbridge, VA. He received his B.S. Degree from Bethel College in McKenzie, TN. He served as the Assistant Band Director while earning his Masters of Music at Radford University. He taught in the Stafford County School System for 15 years prior to moving to the Prince William County System. In 1991, he became the founding Director of Bands for Hylton High School where his bands received 17 consecutive Virginia Honor Band awards. He remains active as a clinician, adjudicator and guest conductor throughout the state of Virginia.

MARK CARDER is a native of Stafford County and is a product of their school system. He holds a Bache-lors Degree in Music Education from James Madison University and a Masters Degree in Science and Educa-tion from Old Dominion University. He is currently in his sixth year as Director of Bands at Woodbridge Senior High School and is completing his twenty-fifth year as an educator in the state. During his tenure at various schools, his bands consistently received “Superior” ratings and other honors including ten Virginia Honor Band awards. He frequently serves as an adjudicator and clinician in the state and is active in many professional organizations.

DARLENE BANKS JENNINGS (DANCE) is a native of Richmond, Virginia who currently resides in Roanoke, VA. As a young person Ms. Jennings trained at the Richmond Ballet and performed as a senior member of their student company. After graduating high school she attended Virginia Tech where she was a founding and principal member of the UJIMA dance company. With the UJIMA dance company she had the opportunity to perform at the Kennedy Center Eisenhower Theater and performed in numerous Regional dance venues. Ms. Jennings graduated from Virginia Tech in 1993 with a degree in Management Information Systems and has been employed with Norfolk Southern Corporation as a computer software developer for over 20 years. Since graduating she has

taught ballet at the Roanoke Ballet Theater and has been involved with numerous area Arts organizations including Opera Roanoke, the Jefferson Center and the Henry Street Musical Ensemble. Ms. Jennings is the mother of a 14 year old son and an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and The Links, Inc.

CARLOS MOORE (ART) is a native of Cleveland, OH. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Edu-cation from Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio in 1982. A year later, he received his Masters Degree in Art Education from Miami University also in Ohio. He spent three years as an art teacher in Cleveland before relocating to Virginia. He was employed by the Lab School of Washington before accepting a position at Chancellor High School in Spotsylvania County in 1990. As an artist, in addition to teaching, he paints, sculpts and illustrates. He recently conducted a successful “one-man-show” in the Fredericksburg area and plans another one in the Fall. He loves working with children and youth.

PATRICK WARE is an active clinician and choral director at the local, state, and national levels. He holds a B.S. in Music from Westfield State College; a MS.ED from Radford University; and a DMA from the Shenandoah Conservatory of Music. Having completed his Level III Orff Certification and Move-ment Apprenticeship at the University of Nevada (Las Vegas), he teaches movement and recorder for the Carnegie Mellon Orff Certification Program as well teaching for the Anna Maria/Worcester Public Schools. He is a former president of the Virginia Elementary Music Educators Association.

DIANA WITCHER-PRENTISS (TABULATOR) is a native of Roanoke, Virginia and currently resides in Richmond, VA. She received her Bachelors Degree from Norfolk State University, Special education endorsement from Virginia Union, and ESOL endorsement and Masters Degree in Administration and Supervision from VCU. She is currently a special education teacher in Richmond Public Schools. She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

Olivia Shedd is the first-born daughter of Brad and Ayson Shedd. She has 5 younger sisters and 2 younger brothers. She has conducted, along with her mother, Music Arts Camps and is now leading after-school Introduction to Music and Dance activities at local elementary schools. Olivia is a Level 6 ballerina at Academie de Ballet in Chesapeake and has received leading roles in their productions performed at Regent University Theater. She also plays violin and is involved in the Bay Youth Orchestras of Virginia in the Symphony Orchestra.

Stefany R. Spencer is a senior at Nansemond River High School in Suffolk, Virginia and The Governor's School for the Arts in Norfolk, Virginia. She first performed when she sang Who Would Imagine a King at 9 years old in her church's annual Christmas production. Since then, she has reprised the role many times. At The Governor's School for the Arts, she has had the opportunity to train in classical music and perform in operas with leading roles. Stefany’s future goals are to study music at a college or conservatory and become a vocalist or musical theater performer.

Jarrett Littles was born in Seoul, South Korea in 1997. He began playing the piano at age 5. He enjoys a variety of music including Jazz, Dub Step, classical and R&B. Jarrett is also an accomplished saxophonist. He began playing the tenor saxophone in third grade and was selected 1st chair, All-District (Prince William County) in 2012 and 2013. Jarrett is a sprinter on the track and field team at Pope John Paul the Great High School. His other activities include skiing, hiking, fishing, trampoline, basketball and playing video games. His parents are Troy and Karen Littles.

Andrew Liang is a senior at Colonial Forge High School. He has studied piano with Sandra Anderson for 10 years and has enjoyed numerous musical opportunities throughout this time. He won second place in the Piedmont Symphony Orchestra Young Artist Competition in 2014 and first place in the Fredericksburg Festival of the Arts Young Artist Competition (FFA YAC) in 2012. He also studies violin; he made All-State Orchestra in 2013 and 2014 and won third in the FFA YAC in 2014. In his spare time, Andrew likes to play basketball, dance, and exercise.

2014 Talent Hunt Contestants

Juwan Washington is a young senior (age 16) at Northside High School in Roanoke, Virginia. Prior to moving to Roanoke two years ago, his early education was in Norfolk, Virginia. Juwan is a very active student who is highly regarded and loved at his high school. He has been a standout in basketball and football. He has been singing since age 3 and is very comfortable while singing in the church and school choirs. Juwan has been involved in several community organizations and in various church groups. He is a very pleasant and well-liked young man.

Matthew Scott began his study of upright bass at the age of 11. He started with the cello in 5th grade and moved to the bass when he entered the 6th grade. He was the principal bassist all 3 years of middle school. While in the 7th grade, University of Michigan music professor, Dr. Michael Hopkins, heard Matthew play and personally invited him to join the Ann Arbor School for Performing Arts Youth Symphony Orchestra. He was thrilled at the opportunity to perform with such a challenging orchestra. He enjoyed the intense symphonic repertoire, rehearsals, and performances. He is the principal bassist of the Symphony Orchestra of the Maryland Classic Youth Orchestra. He studies under Ira Gold, bassist with the National Symphony Orchestra. He considers his passion and talent for the bass to be a gift from God, and he aspires to play professionally.

Tia Flores loves dancing and hopes to take it up professionally one day. She also loves spending time with her mom, her older sisters, puppies, and gymnastics. She is very thankful for God, her friends and family, and she doesn't know where she would be without them! Tia started dancing at a very early age. She has no doubt that she will be a lifelong performer!

Nia Dyke is a 16 year student at E. C. Glass High School in Lynchburg, VA. She enjoys singing, salsa dancing, and writing poetry. She plays sports such as tennis, basketball, soccer, and track. Nia states that because music is her passion, “It’s who I am! I am free and able to be creative.” Her favorite quote comes from Beethoven’s Cannon, “Music Alone Shall Live.” It best describes what music means to her. “All things shall perish from under the sky, Music alone shall live, Music alone shall live, Music alone never to die.”

Kimberly Nichole Swift is a senior at Lakeland High School in Suffolk, Virginia where she's a member of the Cavalier Singers and the Elite Choir. She repre-sented her school in the 2013-2014 All District Choir. Kimberly will be attending Norfolk State University in the fall of 2014 where she plans to major in Music. For the first time, Kimberly heard an NSU ensemble perform at Lakeland and now dreams of being a member of the NSU Spartan Chorale and the NSU Concert Choir. Her plans include making it big in the music industry before graduation. Kimberly has good prospects!

Lucas Nunley has a variety of creative outlets, including piano, programming, and music production. He’s been playing piano for 10 years and plans to continue in college. If you met Lucas during a normal day, you would most likely find him sporting a pair of flip-flops and nursing a cup of coffee. He plans to pursue an academic career in computer science, perhaps becoming a professor.

Anaja Cameron is the 15 year old daughter of (retired) Chief Sobuke I. Cameron (USN) and Delisha Cameron. Anaja is a sophomore at Greensville County High School in Emporia, Virginia where she will be with the graduating class of 2016. Anaja aspires to follow in the footsteps of her dad Retired Chief Cameron (USN) and her uncle West Point Military Academy graduate (2012) and now 1st Lieutenant (US Army) to join the military and have a career in nursing. Anaja enjoys talking on the phone, laughing, attending church and liturgical dancing.

Kayla Williams is 16 years old. She was born in Washington, D.C. and is currently a Junior at Montgomery Blair High School located in Silver Spring, Maryland. In her spare time, she loves to sing, act, and teach herself to play various instruments such as piano and guitar. Why does she sing? She sings because God gave her this amazing gift that she knows she needs to share.

William Sheldon Ledbetter is a senior A-B Honor Roll student at Kecoughtan High School and a mem-ber of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Hampton, VA. William is a gifted musician who has a passion for music which he began at the tender age of 3. He is a member of the Science National Honor Society. He won the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Essay Contest. His favorite instrument is the guitar and his talent has taken him across the country to various competitions, music camps, and performances. William strives to continue to excel academically and exemplify his gift by honoring his craft as a guitarist. William has been accepted to North Carolina A&T State University’s Mechanical Engineering Department.

Khalyn Brown is a senior at Dominion High School. Throughout her middle school and high school career, she has always been in an art class. Art has always been her favorite subject. Khalyn is a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Herndon, VA and enjoys drawing, reading, baking, playing golf, and other sports. She has played for Loudoun Woman's Golf Club, served as president of the I.R.I.S Club, played on Varsity Men's Golf team, and is a member of T3's. Khalyn has received certificates for community service, helping tutor 7th graders in their English classes, and making the A/B honor roll. Most of her artwork has more than one media. Khalyn’s goal is to become a successful graphic designer and design products for tomorrow.

Jordan T. Blackstone is an honor roll sophomore at Meadowbrook High School where he participates in the music program and accompanies the school's theater group. He also serves in the role as class ambassador assisting new students with transition and tutoring. Jordan discovered a love for music at the early age of five and received formal lessons from eight to eleven. He soon discovered that he had a gifted ear and was able to play many genres from jazz to classical to gospel by just listening to the melody. Jordan’s future goals include attending James Madison University and majoring in Political Science. He also plans to continue pursuing music and fashioning the styles of the great Oscar Peterson and the talented Diana Krall.

Nora Winsler has studied voice privately for six years. She was a delegate for All-District Choir in 2012, 2013, and 2014. When she is not singing, she is heavily involved in theatre and dance. Past shows include: “Lend Me A Tenor,” “The Producers,” “Cabaret,” “Anything Goes,” “Chicago,” “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” “42nd Street,” “Guys and Dolls,” “Grease,” and “Beauty and the Beast.” Her favorite roles include: Diana in “Lend Me A Tenor,” Millie in “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” and Belle in “Beauty and the Beast.” She was nominated as Best Female Dancer for her work in “Cabaret.” She has been a choreographer at Franklin Middle School for the past three years. Her future plans are to be involved in the performing arts in any way, shape, or form.

Brooke Ann Sweeney is an 11-year member of the Virginia Children’s Chorus. She auditioned and was accepted to sing in both 2013 and 2014 with the Virginia Chorale’s Young Singer’s Project. She auditioned and was accepted to attend Brevard Music Center in North Carolina in 2013 for piano. She was the 2nd place winner in the Bland Musical Scholarship Contest in 2014, 1st place winner in the piano division as well as 1st place pianist and overall winner of the Chesapeake Fine Art’s Commission Arts Alive Competition in 2014. She is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.

Cameron James Saylor is an eleventh grade honor student at Churchland High School in Portsmouth. Cameron is also a music student at the Governor’s School for the Arts in Norfolk where he is first chair Alto Saxophone in the Jazz Band. He has participated in various plays and All-City musicals in school since he was five years old. He recently went on a two-week tour in Japan with the GSA Voices of Virginia playing Alto and Baritone Saxophone in the stage band. He made first chair Alto Saxophone in the District II All- District Concert Band this year. Cameron is a member of Grove Baptist Church in Portsmouth and plays Alto Sax with the music ministry. He loves participating in community service, jazz music, and composing as well as playing basketball and video games with his older brother Colby. Cameron wants to study music and was inspired to play the saxophone by his late Uncle Cleveland Walton, Jr.
