Welcome to Family Weekend 2016!

Dear UK Families,

Welcome to Family Weekend! We are thrilled you are visiting our campus and learning more about your student’s time at the University of Kentucky. While you are here, we encourage you to explore our campus and the Lexington community. Our students, faculty, and staff have prepared an exciting series of programs and events for Family Weekend:

• Several of our colleges and academic units will host open houses and receptions;

• The UK Parent & Family Association is hosting a pre-game tent party before the UK vs. Vanderbilt University football game;

• And we have organized a “Taste of the Kentucky Doughnut Trail” at the Boone Center for you to savor many of the region’s finest pastries.

This year, UK’s Family Weekend will coincide with Homecoming. As part of the festivities, the Parent & Family Association will host a joint event with the UK Alumni Association at William T. Young Library on Friday evening. All this and more is our tribute to you, special members of our UK family. We hope you take this opportunity to enjoy all aspects of our big blue community. Thank you, again, for spending time with us. We look forward to seeing you on campus! Until then, remember to always “see blue.”

Sincerely,

Eli and Mary Lynne Capilouto

Dear UK Families,

We are excited that your family is here to experience the fun of a busy fall weekend on campus. There is so much to do and see, so take a moment to browse this guide to get an overview. In these pages you’ll find the Family Weekend schedule of events, information on getting around campus and Lexington, and everything we think you need to know to make the most of your time here.

We are indebted to the many offices, student organizations, and individuals who contributed to the planning and execution of Family Weekend. Without the support of the UK community, this weekend wouldn’t be possible. We know you will pass your thanks on to them as well throughout the weekend.

We hope you will enjoy being part of your student’s UK experience for a weekend! Go Cats!

Best wishes,

Nancy StephensNicki JenkinsUK Parent & Family Association Office of New Student & Family Programs

More than 40,000 people a day visit the University of Kentucky — even more on weekends with special events like football games or Family Weekend. While parking lots are spread throughout campus, please realize that you may have to park a short walk from your destination and allow extra time.

• Most employee lots and student commuter lots are accessible and available on weekends, with the exception of lots surrounding Commonwealth Stadium and on Sports Center Drive. Permits are not required after 3:30 p.m. Friday afternoons until 5 a.m. Monday mornings in many North and Central Campus E (employee) and C (commuter) lots.

Family Weekend Parking Information

• Signs are posted at the entrance of each lot to make you aware of parking regulations and any permit requirements.

• Do not park in R (residential) lots.

• Spaces for visitors with disabilities are located throughout campus in close proximity to entrances of university buildings. These spaces, however, typically require an ADA accessible permit issued by Parking and Transportation Services (PTS) or a gate attendant. During Family Weekend only, PTS will allow use of state-issued ADA accessible permits. If you need assistance with locating accessible parking, please contact PTS at 859-257-5757 or toll-free at 800-441-0555. You can contact them via email at [email protected].

South Campus

• On Friday and Sunday, limited parking is available in the Sports Center Garage (PS #7), located on Sports Center Drive; please see www.uky.edu/pts for information about hourly/daily parking rates. The Sports Center Garage is used for reserved football parking on Saturday.

North Campus

• Until 6 p.m. Friday, parking is available in the South Limestone Garage (PS #5), located next to Kennedy’s Wildcat Den; please see www.uky.edu/pts for information about hourly/daily parking rates. After 6 p.m., parking in the structure is free of charge. Free parking is available in E lots on North Campus after 3:30 p.m. Friday and all day Saturday and Sunday.

Central Campus

• The Rose Street Garage (PS #2) on Hilltop Avenue will be open and free of charge after 3:30 p.m. Friday and all day Saturday and Sunday.

For information on visitor parking at UK, please visit www.uky.edu/pts/parking-info_visitor-parking. For a parking map, please visit www.uky.edu/pts/parking-info_parking-maps.

CHECK-IN POLICY

All guests, including family members and students who live in residence halls, must register at the front desk and be escorted by their host at all times while in the building. In addition, guests are required to leave their own picture identification at the front desk, which will be returned when the guest leaves the hall. In order to stay in compliance with fire safety

regulations, each resident may sign in only two guests at a time (overnight guests are limited to one per resident or no more than two per room). During Family Weekend, additional guests will be allowed as long as they are family members.

When a resident has a guest, the resident assumes full responsibility for the conduct and behavior of that guest. Hosts will be held responsible for any policy violations,

Residence Hall Check-in & Visitation Policies

damages, or loss of property attributable to their guests. If a guest fails to comply with any university policy, then they may be asked to leave the undergraduate housing facility until the Office of Residence Life addresses the behavior. Whenever overnight guests are permitted in a particular facility, visits by these guests must be in compliance with the residence hall cohabitation policy and with any applicable roommate agreements. All overnight guests must be registered as overnight guests at the front desk.

Bathroom facilities in each residence facility are designated by gender. Residents and guests may only use facilities designated for their gender. Guests needing to travel between floors in order to use such facilities must be escorted by their host to the bathroom door.

VISITATION

The visitation policy strives to recognize and balance the following priorities:

• The need to maintain a safe environment in all residential facilities

• The need to respect students’ desire for privacy

• The need to recognize the value of visitors in a vibrant, educational community

Co-educational Residence HallsIn all co-ed halls, “in-hall” visitation (students who live in the same residence hall visiting each other) is permitted 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In addition, the visitation policy in co-ed halls is gender-neutral (no distinction as to gender).

Guests from outside the hall (regardless of gender) are permitted to visit 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This policy applies to the following halls:

• Baldwin Hall

• Blazer

• Boyd

• Donovan & Johnson Halls

• German House

• Haggin Hall

• Holmes

• Ingels Hall

• Jewell

• Kirwan IV

• Roselle Hall

• Smith Hall

• Woodland Glen I

• Woodland Glen II

• Woodland Glen III

• Woodland Glen IV

• Woodland Glen V

Minor Visitation Overnight visitation by children age 8 and older is permitted with consent of minor’s parent and host’s roommate, in accordance with Residence Life visitation policy. Overnight visitation by children under age 8 is not permitted. Guests under the age of 18 may be checked in for visitation between 12 noon and 12 midnight. Minors must present either a driver’s license or parental consent form (available online) to check in. Visitation by minors between 12 midnight and 12 noon is considered overnight visitation, and the following conditions apply:

1. Minors (ages 8 – 17) must have parental consent in order to check in between 12 midnight and 12 noon.

2. Consent must be in writing, signed by parent, and contain reason for visit and usable contact information for parent/legal guardian.

3. Parental permission is subject to verification by Residence Life staff.

4. Minor visitation must be approved at least 24 hours in advance by the House Director.

5. Permission for minors to check in may be denied at the discretion of the House Director.

6. Babysitting is not permitted in any residential facilities or resident rooms.
