The pre-sale show was expertly judged by Chris Hewitt of Tatham. The Continental/Suffolk show of hoggs with single class had ten pens forward with the first prized rosette being awarded to JA Chapman of North Lodge. The Mule class had a very impressive show of Mules in front of judge saw Winter Bros of Clickham Farm awarded the first prize and then went onto take the Championship. Plenty of bidders around the ring saw pens well bid for with purchasers looking to purchase strong Hoggs suckling their lambs well. Top quality Mule Hoggs were good to sell, selling to a top of £325 for the second prized pen from Messrs Sowerby of Terrys Farm, who also sold Mule Gimmer Hoggs to £320. The champion pen from Winter Bros of Clickham Farm sold to £320, with others from the same home selling to £300 and £280. Plenty of pens of commercial mule hoggs selling between £150 and £160, with majority of vendors well pleased. Continental hoggs saw the first prize pen sell to £185 from JA Chapman of North Lodge, with better types regularly in excess of £160. A small number of geld hoggs forward saw Texels from RA Batty of Redhills sell to £102 and Mules from J & T Hunter of Moser Hill sell to £96. The major flock reduction of Robert Garth and Kelly Armitage’s Beltex and Beltex x flock attracted a large amount of attention. The flock, renowned for its success over recent years in the show circuit for producing top quality prime lambs and winning numerous prizes. Beltex x shearling and young ewes with top quality single Beltex lambs sold to £290 and £285 The weekly sale of ewes with lambs were good to sell with plenty of faces around the ring, as the weather warms up and the grass begins to grow. Topping the trade at £94 was PD Anderton, Scorton with 3 nice Texels at 46kg. Top pence per kilo of 211ppk came from WN & D Smith, Cockerham with Suffolks and PW & DW Roskell, Pilling with 38kg Charollais. A slightly sharper average of 191ppk was achieved. A bigger show of Hoggs for Lancaster with 271 forward, well fleshed hoggs sold well, topping at 202ppk from J & H Davis, Cabus with a smart pen of 14 Cheviots. Top price per head came from T & CMN Kelsall, Chipping with a pair of 55kg Texels realising £98. A run of well finished hoggs from J Fryars sold well, with Texels at £93 and Swales at £78. Overall average of 168ppk. The Spring Show and Sale of Hoggs with Lambs at Foot had a good entry of just shy of 170 families forward. The pre-sale show saw RG & H Preece, Thornbush take the 1st Place Mules and Overall Champion Rosettes, which later sold to £175. An entry of good commercial sheep

forward were met by a ringside of cautious buyers and saw best sorts in excess of £150 for Mules with singles and plainer types £130-£145.

In the Continental class, Tony Chapman, North Lodge took the first place ticket, these later sold for £142. Best Texels with singles in excess

of £130. A few older sheep forward, saw Mule Shearlings and 1 crops with Twins sell to £160 from Alec Sutcliffe, broken mouth ewes with

singles to £152 from RG & H Preece.

Stores sold to a top of £1200 for a 29month Blue Bullock from J & M Cockett, Ingleton. Native bred cattle sold to £1190 for an Angus bullock from R Escolme, Bay Horse. Heifers to £1150, again for an Angus, from Jim Bracken, Catterall. Dairy heifers to 144.5 from Jones Sandvilla and dairy cows to 124.5ppk from Wallbank Farms, Abbeystead. All classes sold to a good trade through when comparing to other local centres. An overall average of 104ppk was achieved for all forward. British Blue bulls sold to £260 from J W & D Robinson & Sons of Hollins Farm. Black and whites sold to £100 from AG & ME Clarke of The Ashes. Vendors are politely asked to inform Ian of entries, so buyers can be informed, with over 12 buyers forward today looking for calves. There was 28 Breeding Cattle forward at the monthly sale. A nice ringside of buyers around the ring were making the trade, which resulted in the vendors going home happy. A top price of £1,550 for a BB heifer with a Lim heifer calf from C Wilson, Nether Hall.

A large selection of small items were forward and sold to a very strong trade, whilst out on the yard a big entry of the Tractors and Farm Machinery were well sold a dispersal of farm machinery from Messrs Case of Barrow-in-Furness saw a Massey Ferguson 5645 with a loader sell for £19,200, an Ifor Williams Cattle Trailer to £2000 and a Vicon Mower to £1800. Other leading prices saw £10,500 for a Zetor 8441 Proxima, £2800 for a Massey Ferguson 565, £650 for a Vicon Two Drum Mower, £1250 for a Leyland 255, £1800 for a Four Furrow Kverneland Plough, £500 for a Calf Creep. Buyers certainly the most interested to date and eagerly bidding for lambs. A market average of 209ppk, with best types regularly selling between 250ppk and 269ppk. Trade topped at 269ppk for a Beltex x lamb from P & SA Edmondson of Low Barrows Green. A lamb from the same home sold to £117. Texel lambs regularly either side of the 220ppk mark with Suffolk Mules selling either side of the 210ppk mark.

Well meated hoggs in very strong demand, with a market average of 171ppk and hoggs weighing between 39kg and 45kg averaging 181ppk. Plenty of Contiental Hoggs sold around to 200ppk mark. A bigger show of 466 Cast Ewes today, selling to the same fast trade. Mules sold to £89, with the best sorts £82-£86. Top price of the day came from Alan Blair, with a pure Suffolk ewe realising £128. Biggest sheep in excess of £100, with a pen of four Charollais from M P & A Lee, Arkholme selling to £119.
